Kapitel 36

"Not many." Old Liu put the keys back in his pocket and said, "Just one."

All that was there was was Zhu Zhenhua's body? Li Yang and I exchanged a glance, a sense of unease chilling us to the bone. Old Liu put away the keys and turned to leave without a word, leaving Li Yang and me standing dumbfounded at the door.

"Hey, are you coming in or not?" Li Yang finally spoke first, asking me.

"Go in!" I adjusted my mindset. It's just an autopsy, right? What's so scary about it? Even though it's a funeral home, the methods are still the same!

Pushing open the door, we found only a row of cold morgue cabinets standing forlornly before us in the vast room. Following the scent, we opened one of the cabinets, and a cloud of cold air immediately billowed out like white smoke. In the smoke, the corpse of a middle-aged or elderly man, who had become obese, came into view. The desiccated body was completely devoid of moisture, and the clumps of fat that had been there seemed to have solidified under the skin. His cheeks were thin and pale, covered with a dark aura, and his eyes were closed, appearing somewhat sunken.

"Come and help!" I yelled at Li Yang, who had been standing there motionless after placing the instrument on the ground.

"What?" Li Yang walked over and asked.

"Of course I'll help carry him out! How can I perform an autopsy inside the cabinet?" I said as I put on a mask and gloves, and tossed a copy to Li Yang.

"Going to do hard labor again?" Li Yang reluctantly put on the gear and said, "Why didn't you call Xiao Ren?"

“Because you’re stronger!” I replied, already gripping one side of the corpse with both hands. With a pull, Li Yang and I lifted the body onto the autopsy table. The body was much heavier than we had expected. Strangely, while lifting it, I felt as if I were carrying a large water bag, swaying back and forth, as if the corpse was full of water. I looked up at Li Yang, who was also looking at me strangely. It seemed my worries weren’t unfounded.

"Doesn't it seem strange?" Li Yang asked me, shrinking his neck.

"There seems to be water in this corpse!" I pointed at the body, then looked around. The white light above was flickering, and the frequency of the flickering gradually moved my eyelids; my left eye started twitching again. At this moment, I realized that this room didn't have any windows at all, so where did that gust of cold wind come from?

"Should we call Lao Liu over?" Li Yang asked me.

I shook my head. Maybe not; he wouldn't be of any help anyway. Picking up the scalpel, I was momentarily unsure whether to proceed. Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself and placed the scalpel against the corpse's neck.

Glug~~~~~~!

That strange sound again, like beads bobbing in water, but this time it was coming from the corpse's swollen belly! Just as I was about to look up at Li Yang, a sharp, throbbing pain shot through my left eye. My hand trembled, and the scalpel had already sliced through the corpse's skin. I quickly pulled my hand back, but the wound, which should have been extremely minor, rapidly split downwards, revealing the inner layers of skin and the already pale muscle before my eyes. Then, thick, black blood gushed from the corpse like a spring, gushing out like a punctured blood bag, and along with the black blood flowed countless white eyeballs!

"Ah!" I cried out in alarm and hurriedly backed away, but the black blood seemed to flow endlessly, pouring out of the corpse like a waterfall. White eyeballs bounced up and down from the ground like marbles, desperately rushing towards me!

"No!" I instinctively reached out to block the flying eyeballs. The pain in my left eye spread like fire, the fishy smell intensified at that moment, and the feeling of gagging made my stomach churn.

Standing before the corpse, drenched in sweat, I gasped for breath. The things before me shimmered with a reddish glow. I felt as weak as if I had just recovered from a serious illness. I shook my head and looked closely. The black blood and the eyeballs had all vanished. Only the still-intact corpse and a clearly stunned Li Yang stood before me.

After regaining my composure, I felt my legs were a little lightheaded. I wobbled and braced myself against the side of the dissection table to keep from falling to the ground. At that moment, Li Yang, who had just turned to stone, also came to his senses and slowly approached me, asking, "What happened to you just now?"

What's wrong? Didn't you see those things? I stared blankly at Li Yang, who looked concerned, and asked, "Eyeballs were flowing out of the corpse, didn't you see?"

"Eyeballs? No! I just saw you looking like you were possessed!" Li Yang walked over to me and helped me up.

I exhaled and remained silent. It seemed it was just another hallucination. Why do these things keep appearing lately? Could it really be that I've been possessed by the demon's left eye? I turned to look at Zhu Zhenhua's corpse. There was only a tiny wound on his neck, and his pale, shriveled skin looked like a large, deflated white balloon. The whole mass of flesh lay sprawled on the dissection table. I steadied myself, wiped the sweat from my brow, and opened my mouth to say something when the door was suddenly flung open with a bang.

"You are not allowed to perform an autopsy!" A woman rushed in and stood menacingly in front of Li Yang and me.

"Why can't we take a test? Are you guilty?" Zhu Wei, who had just left, turned back and followed closely behind the woman.

Upon closer inspection, she was a fair-skinned middle-aged woman. Time hadn't left many marks on her face, yet a certain world-weariness gave her a weathered beauty. She seemed like a beauty sculpted by time; the accumulation of years didn't matter, her charm could slowly develop over time. Looking at this beautiful middle-aged woman and Zhu Wei closely following behind her, I immediately guessed her identity—she must be Zhu Zhenhua's wife, Zhu Wei's stepmother!

"Excuse me, who are you...?" Li Yang always greeted beautiful women, regardless of their age, with the same attitude.

"I am Xi Zhen, Zhu Zhenhua's wife." Xi Zhen glanced at Li Yang and said to me. It seemed that although she and Zhu Wei did not look alike, their tone of voice and manner were just as arrogant.

"Oh, Madam Xi, we are working now, please don't disturb us." I stepped forward and pulled Li Yang behind me, saying.

"Work? Who told you to come and perform an autopsy? What right do you have to touch my husband's body?" Xi Zhen stepped forward and asked relentlessly.

"This is what we were told to do. If you have any complaints, please contact them," I replied, neither humble nor arrogant.

"Up there? I think it's more like someone deliberately causing trouble!" Xi Zhen said, glancing at Zhu Wei, whose face had already grown long, with a veiled insult.

"Hey! Who knows who's behind this!" Zhu Wei retorted sarcastically.

"Hmph!" Xi Zhen snorted and turned her head away without even glancing at Zhu Wei.

"What's so great about you?" Zhu Wei suddenly slammed his hand on the autopsy table, making the corpse's fat tremble, and said, "You're the one who killed Dad!"

"Hey! You can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want!" Xi Zhen said calmly, "Do you have any evidence?"

"Evidence? Ha! Isn't finding the man who came to see you last time enough evidence?" Zhu Wei was so angry that he rolled up his sleeves, looking like a thug.

When Xi Zhen heard Zhu Wei mention men, her face suddenly darkened, and a fierce glint shot from her eyes at Zhu Wei, causing him to shrink back in fear. Li Yang and I exchanged a glance; we both knew this woman was no ordinary person!

"You are not allowed to examine it anymore! I'm contacting your superiors right now!" After saying that, Xi Zhen glared at me and Li Yang fiercely, then turned and quickly left the room. As for her husband's body, she didn't even glance at it.

"Damn it! You slut!" Zhu Wei spat on the ground and cursed after Xi Zhen left.

"Do you know who that man you're talking about is?" Although gossip is generally considered bad, for some reason my sixth sense told me that this man must have some potential connection to the case, so I asked.

"If I knew, would I have let you perform the autopsy? I would have arrested the adulterous couple long ago!" Zhu Wei waved his hand and glanced at Zhu Zhenhua on the autopsy table. Although it was just a fleeting glance, I still saw a trace of sadness in his eyes. It seems that this man is not truly worthless.

"Hey, why aren't you guys doing the testing?" Zhu Wei asked us.

"There's nothing I can do, Madam Xi won't allow it! The law stipulates that an autopsy cannot be performed unless a criminal case is involved, and there is objection from a relative." I said helplessly, spreading my hands.

"Damn it!" Zhu Wei cursed, turned around and rushed out of the room.

After Xi Zhen and Zhu Wei's commotion, I knew the autopsy couldn't continue, so I could only sigh heavily. Li Yang's hard work was over.

"What, you're really not doing it anymore?" Li Yang asked from the side.

“Yeah!” I shrugged. “It’s best not to examine these weird-looking corpses.”

"Strange? I think you were the strangest one just now!" Li Yang helped me put the body back in the freezer.

After putting the freezer away, I tried to sound casual as I told Li Yang about the hallucination I had just experienced. Li Yang's first reaction was to grab me and run out of the room, sprinting away from the corpse.

"Don't walk so fast!" I looked at Li Yang, who was dragging me along while carrying the equipment on my shoulder, and couldn't help but admire the explosive potential of people.

"How can we not walk fast in this place? Fang Lei told me to keep an eye on you!" Li Yang said, quickening his pace.

My heart warmed when I thought of Fang Lei. What is she doing now? Is she missing me like I am?

Panting, we ran to the entrance of the funeral home. Old Liu was already there, talking to Xi Zhen and Zhu Wei. When he saw us running over, he smiled kindly at us and said, "You're gone so soon?"

"Yes, yes! We have other things to do!" Li Yang grabbed me, not even giving me a chance to stop and say goodbye to Lao Liu, and dragged me into the car. As soon as we got in, Li Yang started the car and left the funeral home behind in a matter of moments.

"You don't need to be scared like a mouse running around!" I said lazily, leaning against the car door.

"I'm nothing like you!" Li Yang said matter-of-factly. "I have my ex-lover's ten-thousand-year-old ghost jade, a girlfriend who knows magic, and that soul-refining technique from your Lin family. Of course I have to run fast!"

"Don't mention any soul refining techniques to me!" I get so angry just thinking about it. It's a powerful spell that could kill a boss like Song Tian, but after that day, I couldn't remember the hand gestures at all. Even if I racked my brains, all I could remember was a pair of jade-like hands. My attempt to show off in front of Fang Lei was nipped in the bud.

"Alright, didn't Li Hai and Fang Lei go back and ask for you? What's the rush?" Li Yang comforted me.

"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore! Do you think we should go back to the police station or somewhere else?" I glanced at my watch; it was already past four in the afternoon. Anyway, it's Sunday, so it shouldn't count as skipping work, right?

"Of course we're not going back to the police station! If Chen Kai catches us, we'll definitely get another scolding! Let's go find Bai Yun instead!" Li Yang looked at me "affectionately" with his bright eyes.

"Don't you already have that pretty girl at the library? Do you want another one?" I glanced at him and said coldly.

"Oh! I call this casting a wide net; there will always be a harvest someday!" Li Yang explained with utter shamelessness.

"No! I'm so tired! I want to go back and rest. I'll find you soon!" I leaned my head against the car window and closed my eyes, but the countless eyeballs mixed in with the black blood made me shiver involuntarily.

"Okay! I'll take you home then!" Seeing that I really looked like I was about to collapse, Li Yang decided to take me home first.

I drove all the way to my house. As soon as I got out of the car, Li Yang stopped me and asked, "Is it really nothing between you and Bai Yun?"

"Nonsense! I already have Fang Lei!" I quickly clarified.

"But it seems you knew Bai Yun before Fang Lei, right? You two used to..." Li Yang asked with an ambiguous expression.

"Don't worry! It's just a mutually beneficial relationship at most." I waved my hand and headed home without waiting for Li Yang to ask any more questions, which prompted Li Yang to yell, "Hey, what do you mean by a mutually beneficial relationship? Explain yourself! I don't want to wear your old shoes!"

Ignoring Li Yang's shouts behind me, I quickly went up the stairs. When I entered the house, it was still cold and deserted, with only me inside. Sometimes I even wondered if I really had an older sister, since the house was always so cold and impersonal.

I threw myself heavily onto the bed, covered my face with my hands, and felt a sudden chill run through my body, my bones trembling. My whole body ached with exhaustion, but I couldn't fall asleep. My eyelids were heavy, and as soon as I closed my eyes, my eyeballs floated before my eyes. My left eye still throbbed, and my left temple felt like it was cramping; it felt like all my nerves were on edge. This feeling of wanting to sleep but not being able to was driving me crazy. I thought I probably had neurasthenia.

I sat up and, as if possessed, sat down in front of the computer. When I turned it on, I realized that my hands were frozen red and my fingertips were numb.

I typed in the URL of that mysterious website, and after a series of creaking noises, the computer displayed the words "This page cannot be displayed." I felt a sense of relief, a mix of relief and disappointment.

After browsing various websites and reading some news, I suddenly realized that I hadn't checked my email in a long time. So I quickly clicked on my email and found that I had over thirty unread emails.

I clicked to enter, and as the computer screen kept refreshing, I saw the titles of those emails. One email title immediately caught my attention because of its five big words: The Devil's Left Eye.

What's going on? Who sent this to me? Upon closer inspection, the sender field is completely empty! Although I've heard that sender information is encrypted, who could be playing this joke on me?

Thinking of this, I quickly clicked on the title. The screen immediately flickered violently, and then the entire email content finally appeared, still in red text on a black background:

From the moment you notice blood flowing from your left eye, the demon's left eye has completely entered your body. What you are about to see is the demon looking down on the world from hell.

I subconsciously touched my left eye. I remembered that night in the mirror of the unfinished building, my left eye bleeding and tears streaming down my face. Then I saw some unclean things. Were those images the world as seen through the eyes of demons? Were they real or illusions? Ugly or false? I swallowed hard and continued reading:

Did you know? When I looked at the world through the eyes of this demon, I saw many things I shouldn't have seen. Don't believe me? Then haven't you noticed the eye behind you?

Upon seeing this, I couldn't help but gasp. My eyes were fixed on the computer screen, which reflected light, revealing what was behind me. And right now, I could vaguely see a red eyeball hovering over my shoulder!

Turning around, it was still empty!

On the screen, the eye was slowly rotating, its pupil fixed on me. I felt as if I were completely naked and exposed before it, and emptiness and fear made my body stiffen. The eye remained fixed on the screen, where it read:

Don't doubt it, everything you see is real, even the sound of eyeballs rolling on the ground is real!

A familiar yet terrifying sound came from the ceiling, and cold sweat dripped down my face.

Someone's already dead, right? And the body's left eye is missing, isn't it? But don't worry, let's take a closer look at where it might be found! Haha~~~~! Is it inside the body's stomach? Haha~~~~!

The laughter that was originally just written in an email suddenly appeared eerily next to my ears. The sharp laughter pierced my eardrums, and the booming tinnitus made me dizzy. The laughter grew stronger and stronger, as if it filled the entire room, and there were even constant echoes...

Just as I was about to faint, my phone suddenly rang loudly in my pocket, and the laughter stopped instantly. I picked up the phone and answered it. Xiao Ren's voice came through again: "I'm so sorry, Lin Xiao, it looks like you'll have to come again. Another murder case!"

My hands trembled, and my eyes were fixed on the bottom of the email that had already ended, where a line of large, blood-red text gradually reappeared:

The demon opened its left eye again; another murder had occurred!

With a start, my phone fell to the ground with a thud.

When I arrived at the crime scene, it was already past six o'clock in the evening. Winter nights come especially quickly, and the sky was already pitch black, just like my mood right now.
