Mercenary Princess - Chapter 65
He was finally jolted back to his senses by Rongyue's roar. Looking at Rongyue, whose face was a mixture of anger and rage, he was somewhat bewildered: "You..."
"Are you trying to kill yourself?! Climb up! The wolf is coming!!" Rongyue shoved him against the tree, supporting his bottom and using all her strength to push him upwards, trying to lift him to the top. But her will was insufficient; how could her petite frame support a seven-foot-tall man? Cold sweat streamed down her face…
Rongyue's actions greatly embarrassed him, and a blush instantly spread across his jade-like face: "I..."
"Aww- -"
"Awooo--"
Just then, the howls of wolves rose and fell, gradually approaching from afar! The howls pierced the silent forest, startling the sleeping beasts and rousing countless birds and thousands of animals! The entire forest was filled with rustling sounds, and the terrifying howls of wolves rose again, creating a tense and ominous atmosphere in the dark forest!
Judging from the sound, there were at least a hundred wolves! Rongyue and he both felt a chill run down their spines. He leaned to the side, quickly pulling the trembling Rongyue up with his large hand, and leaped swiftly to the treetop.
Holding tightly to his waist, Rongyue still felt lingering fear as she watched the pack of wolves arrive at the tree in the next moment.
The wolves were unwilling to give up. They circled the birch tree where Rongyue and the other person were, with wolves constantly leaping up the tree and tearing at the rough bark, trying to climb the tall birch tree...
After several unsuccessful attempts, the wolf pack became somewhat discouraged, sticking out their tongues as they stared at the two people perched on the tree branch.
Gazing at the rows of glowing green eyes beneath the tree, Rongyue gasped, her arms tightening involuntarily around his waist. It really was a white-horned wolf! A white-horned wolf… not easy to deal with…
Sensing Rongyue's movement, he stiffened slightly at first, then naturally patted her back. Staring at the menacing pack of wolves, his heart pounded: "Since ancient times, escaping from under the noses of wolves isn't unusual, but to survive a pack of wolves is truly rare! Wolves are cunning and treacherous, full of tricks, and they know how to cooperate. Prey targeted by a pack almost never escapes being torn apart! They won't give up until they achieve their goal; even if they corner their prey, they won't easily relinquish their prize..."
A piercing howl shattered the sky. Immediately afterward, all the wolves turned and approached the one-eyed she-wolf who had made the sound, bending their forelegs as if waiting for her command.
The one-eyed she-wolf glanced menacingly at the two people in the tree with her remaining green eye, paced back and forth a couple of times, howled several times, and then suddenly leaped high onto another wolf! Standing atop that robust wolf, she sometimes growled softly at the pack, sometimes glanced at the tree, seemingly giving them some kind of signal…
The mother wolf's series of movements made Rongyue's face turn pale: "Oh no! They might be forming a human pyramid!!"

As expected, after the one-eyed she-wolf gave the command, the pack of wolves howled at the sky, leaping and nimbly moving, and in moments they formed a perfectly orderly line. They drooled greedily at the two men waiting in the tree, and with a short howl from the she-wolf, the strong male wolf at the head of the line shot towards the birch trunk like an arrow!
With a leap, the male wolf landed on the tree trunk, its limbs gripping the bark tightly to steady its powerful frame. Immediately, a second wolf followed, using the first wolf's body as a springboard to jump to a new height! Then, a third wolf followed suit, using the first and second wolves as stepping stones, gradually closing in on the two figures in the tree…
Snap! With lightning speed, her right hand reached up the branch behind her, fiercely snapping off a thumb-sized piece in mid-air. Holding it between her fingers, accompanied by the chilling light flashing from Rongyue's eyes, the broken half of the branch was thrust straight at the fourth wolf's forehead with tremendous force!
The fourth wolf, whose front paws had just touched the shoulder of the wolf in front of it, hadn't even had time to let out a death howl before its eyes rolled back and it plummeted straight down from mid-air like a kite with a broken string...
The wolf pack did not fall into chaos. The next wolf ran up, picked up the fourth wolf who had "died in the line of duty," and, under the mother wolf's command, ran back to the pack. Together with the other wolves, they tore and ripped apart the wolf's carcass, devouring it... In the blink of an eye, the huge wolf was reduced to a pile of white wolf bones!
After finishing their meal, the well-trained wolf pack returned to its orderly state. Then, another wolf took over from the fourth, running a short distance and leaping over the bodies of the wolves in front of them...
Another branch snapped off. This wolf had repeated the fate of its companion! The moment its body hit the ground, another wolf grabbed its carcass and tossed it back to the pack to devour it! Then, another wolf fearlessly charged forward…
Amidst the astonished and shocked expressions of those around her, Rongyue used a tree branch to kill one ferocious mountain wolf after another. In less than half an hour, the number of wolves had been reduced by more than half! Yet, despite this, the remaining wolves not only did not give up, but instead became more courageous, fearlessly charging towards the birch tree, determined not to stop until they dragged the two of them down from the tree!
Her entire body was on edge. Although her right hand was sore from flicking the branch, she dared not relax for even a moment. She kept her eyes fixed on the wolves baring their teeth at them, and if they made the slightest move, the branch would pierce through the air without hesitation...
After an unknown amount of time, Rongyue was about to catch her breath after killing a wolf when, unexpectedly, a cunning wolf that had been hiding under the tree suddenly leaped up and pounced on her, baring its teeth and claws! The unexpected turn of events made Rongyue's heart tighten. She quickly reached behind her, only to find nothing – she had already broken off all the branches around her!
There was only a precious second to react! In that second, Rongyue reached into her quiver with her left hand and, with lightning speed, thrust an arrow into its throat!
A stream of hot, pungent liquid sprayed into Rongyue's eyes. Pulling out the arrow, without even wiping the nauseating wolf blood from her face, Rongyue shoved the wolf carcass off a tall tree.
Just now, his heart had practically leaped into his throat! His chest pounded like a drum, and he gasped for breath. His deep eyes were fixed on Rongyue, who remained calm and composed in the face of danger, and a sense of deep respect welled up within him...
No! She's already broken off all the branches around them, and the nearest tall birch tree is dozens of meters away. With his skill, he simply can't carry her that far! If this continues, they'll only end up in the wolf's belly! No, they can't just sit here and wait to die!
Suddenly, a beam of green light, like a venomous snake, shot straight at Rongyue in the tree! Turning her head, she unexpectedly met a pair of green eyes filled with resentment! In a flash, Rongyue realized—to shoot a man, shoot his horse first; to capture a thief, capture his king first!
He drew his bow, held his breath, and focused! With a whoosh, the arrow, carrying Rongyue's immense hopes, flew impatiently toward the mother wolf, who was surrounded by admirers—a piercing howl escaped her lips as the arrow struck her only remaining right eye. The sharp arrow lodged in her eye, and she thrashed about in agony, blood gushing from her eye socket…
"Still not dead? Its vitality is truly tenacious!" With a bloodthirsty smile, Rongyue swiftly drew a second arrow, and in the next second, the black arrowhead whistled towards it once again!
An arrow pierced its cunning and scheming head! It struggled weakly for a moment, then collapsed to the ground, finally still, blood gushing from its forehead like a fountain…
Without their leader, the wolves descended into chaos. Surrounding their mother, they howled mournfully, seemingly trying to awaken her from her eternal slumber…
In the end, the wolves did not attack again. Carrying the mother wolf's carcass, they whimpered and turned back the way they had come, disappearing into the distant gray-white horizon...
The two people in the tree finally breathed a long sigh of relief. Rongyue slumped her shoulders, looking exhausted, her right hand too sore to lift. A gust of cold wind swept in, penetrating her skin beneath her clothes, and the biting chill made her realize that her back was soaked with cold sweat.
After a long pause, she slightly raised her eyes, about to speak, but met his scrutinizing gaze. She hesitated for a moment, then looked away into the distance: "Dawn is breaking; we should go back."
His gaze remained fixed on Rongyue's face: "Yes, it's almost dawn. It's time for us to go back!" With that, he put his arm around Rongyue's thin shoulder and leaped down from the tree.
Having squatted in the tree for too long, Rongyue's legs went numb, her body swayed and staggered, and she looked like she was about to fall forward...
A pair of strong hands supported her waist at just the right moment: "Be careful."
Using the momentum to steady herself, she subtly brushed his hands away: "Thank you. Let's hurry on our way!"
With his arms crossed, he glanced at the tired and listless Rongyue and asked, "Are you sure your body can handle this?"
Ignoring the numbness and pain in her legs, Rongyue sternly ordered, "Enough nonsense! Lead the way!"
He shook his head and chuckled, then lifted his shirt, squatted down, and patted Rongyue's shoulder with a hearty gesture: "Don't be shy, let's go!"
I didn't want to pay him any attention, but then I thought, why not take a free sedan chair? After all, it was his own choice, not hers forcing him!
Moving her stiff legs, Rongyue nestled against his strong back, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind. The warm, supple body made her let out a soft moan of pleasure. She rubbed her face against his back a few times, finding a comfortable spot, and quietly pressed herself against his broad back. Her eyelids, weary from the weight, drooped heavily, and she drifted off to sleep…
A soft snore reached his ears from behind. His heart suddenly swelled, a strange feeling spreading through him, though he was completely unaware of it at the time…
He slowed his pace, stepping lightly through the morning dew, and strode towards the distance. At that moment, he hoped, hoped that this road would stretch endlessly to the horizon…
Rongyue, still asleep, was awakened by a tiger's roar that echoed through the valley. Her alert almond-shaped eyes snapped open in an instant, and when she saw a large, spotted tiger with an arrow stuck in its back, roaring and charging at them, Rongyue didn't even have time to think. With her right hand she drew an arrow, her left hand she nocked the bow, and the arrowhead was aimed straight at the tiger's head!
