Chapter 17

Calling Ji Li was an accident.

He had brought the white rose back and placed it on the table, intending to put it in a box to prevent it from being crushed. However, a sudden rain blew it off the table and onto the ground. The wet gauze could not maintain its original shape for a moment, and even if he found it on the spot and picked it up, it was already unrecognizable.

The cloth still has creases.

Ying Yunsheng tried many times to restore it to its original state, but still could not do so.

Even the crumpled cloth seemed to mock him, proclaiming that no matter how hard he tried or how much he tried to salvage the situation, he could do nothing right and could only make things worse.

Just like him, he's absolutely awful.

Human emotions are a fascinating subject.

The amazing thing is that one second everything is calm and peaceful, but the next second something trivial can cause a huge uproar.

It's very inexplicable.

But it's uncontrollable.

"The roses have fallen."

Ying Yunsheng asked, "Could you teach me how to fold it?"

Ji Li paused for a moment, then said, "Sure."

Ying Yunsheng was brought back to his senses by his voice. He looked down at the tattered rag in his hand, which had become frayed from being folded so many times and was now covered in dirt from water and dust.

It seems that craftsmanship requires talent. The other party gave him instructions over the phone, but he still couldn't recreate it.

Something that was crumbling inside him was slowly slipping away. He closed his eyes briefly: "Never mind."

Ji Li asked in confusion, "Hmm?"

Ying Yunsheng's tone was no different from usual: "It's already frayed, let's not do it."

Ji Li thought about the material of the gauze in the school clinic and didn't insist: "Okay then."

The call should end here. Ying Yunsheng said, "Is there anything else? I'll hang up now?"

Ji Li said "okay," and then added, "When we get back to school, I'll give you another one?"

Ying Yunsheng paused for a moment.

The person on the other end probably misunderstood his silence: "If you don't want roses, how about a lucky star instead?"

"Well……"

"Or a little white rabbit?"

"Well……"

"Ying Yunsheng?"

"No need, it's too much trouble." Ying Yunsheng lowered his eyes. "Besides, you've given me a lot of origami before."

“Those were rewards before, this is different.”

Ying Yunsheng blinked very slowly: "What reward?"

"Because you don't cry."

"Well……"

“No matter what you’ve been through in the past, you’ve never cried.” Ji Li smiled. “I’ve always thought you were incredibly amazing.”

"Uh..." Ji Li waited for a long time but there was no response from the other side, so he could only ask again in confusion, "Ying Yunsheng?"

The other end responded with a soft "hmm".

"What's wrong?"

"It's okay, I'll hang up now."

After the receiver was knocked down, the light on the screen went out.

Ying Yunsheng covered his eyes with his palms, but still felt warm tears overflowing from between his fingers, dripping silently down like a sudden downpour indoors.

Nobody knows.

A note from the author:

Thank you so much for your support! I will continue to work hard!

"A pair of Ks."

"A pair of Aces."

"Well……"

"Do you want it?"

Jian Mingyuan held the three cards he had left in his hand, his gaze sweeping over the face of the person opposite him for a long time, before gritting his teeth and saying, "A pair of 2s!"

Ji Li took out four 6s: "Bomb".

"Well……"

"An 8, a 7, and a 5." Ji Li spread out three cards in a row before asking, only to ask perfunctorily, "Anyone want one?"

"Well……"

“A 3.” Ji Li placed the last card on the table. “I’m done.”

The outcome was already decided, but Jian Mingyuan was still unwilling to give up. He held a few cards and calculated repeatedly. After finishing the calculation, he threw the only 4 he had left on the table in despair: "If I hadn't played those two 2s like that, I would have won this game!"

Ye Ruhui, unusually, did not laugh at him, and even patted him on the shoulder in a humane way: "You'll get used to losing after a while."

Jian Mingyuan ruthlessly slapped the card away: "Didn't you only have one card left? Where did you go just now?"

Ye Ruhui spread his hands innocently: "I only have a 5 left, so tell me how I'm supposed to play it?"

Jian Mingyuan had nothing to say.

This is what frustrated him the most.

If you were to actually compile a list, he would have lost even more than Ye Ruhui. Especially in the later stages, it almost became a one-on-one battle between him and Ji Li. He always had the upper hand, but he never won, which made it seem like all their losses were his fault.

"I'll be a dog if I ever touch poker again."

As Ji Li tidied up the playing cards scattered all over the table, she smiled at him and said, "You're actually pretty good at playing Dou Dizhu (a popular Chinese card game)."

Jian Mingyuan covered his face: "Don't try to persuade me."

“Ye Ruhui doesn’t play cards by testing the waters; he usually plays cards based on his first reaction after comparing them with the previous player’s hand. But you tend to think things through before and after the game,” Ji Li said. “That’s why you can always survive until the later stages of the game.”

Although it might seem like a comparison, it has to be said that Jian Mingyuan was actually subtly coaxed: "So, between him and me, do you still think I'm more difficult to deal with?"

Ji Li thought for a moment and said, "You are easier to guide because you can see what I want you to see."

"Just tell me I'm easy to fool."

Jian Mingyuan watched helplessly as the other player was about to put the cards back in the box, then slammed his hand on the desk: "Again!"

Before Ji Li could speak, Cui Zhuoyue, who had been watching from the sidelines for a while, interjected, "You've lost thirteen games in a row, and you still haven't realized that the class monitor isn't playing the same game as you guys?"

"Clam?"

"While you're playing Dou Dizhu (a popular Chinese card game), he's on The Brain."

"Uh..." Not many students remained in the classroom at noon, and one by one, their attention was drawn to this scene. Someone couldn't help but ask, "Really, they lost thirteen games in a row?"

“Yes.” Cui Zhuoyue was happy to be the commentator. “Actually, there were wins and losses at the beginning, but later they found that Ji Li never lost, so they simply let him be the landlord in every game, and that’s how it ended up.”

The student who asked the question looked at him with sympathy: "That's so tragic."

Jian Mingyuan's competitive spirit was aroused: "No! Let's do it again!"

"Next time." Ji Li pushed the box to Ye Ruhui and gestured to the wall clock. "Exams are coming up soon."

As if in response to his words, the loudspeaker rang out, announcing that lunch break was over.

Ye Ruhui tossed the deck of cards into his schoolbag: "That's it, time to go take the exam."

As soon as he stepped out the door, he almost bumped into someone, and their heads collided heavily with a "thud".

Ye Ruhui had a curse already rising in his throat. He frowned, covered his head, and looked over: "Zhu Yi?"

Zhu Yi arrived at some point and said in a low voice, "I've come to get a book."

Ye Ruhui said "Oh" and stepped aside.

.

Although the pace of study was tight, the school never reduced the exam time for everyone. The start and end times of the monthly exams strictly adhered to the college entrance examination standards. There were two subjects every day for two days in total, and all the extra time was concentrated on self-study classes.

That afternoon, just after the last English exam was over, before everyone had even put the classroom that had been requisitioned as an exam room back to its original state, Mao Xianzhi came over carrying it.

The freshly printed green paper was passed around with a rustling sound, still warm from being ironed when you picked it up, truly living up to the homeroom teacher's words "freshly baked".

As they flipped through the papers and checked the answers, by the time they finished correcting the entire test, they had already figured out how they would cry in front of their parents this time.

After handing out a stack of papers, Mao Xianzhi still held another stack in his hand, but instead of gray, it was white: "We've already had a monthly exam this week, so there won't be a weekly exam on Sunday."

There was a half-second silence, and then cheers erupted instantly.

Mao Xianzhi then uttered the conjunction "but" that indicated a shift in thought: "You still need to return to school on Sunday to participate in the physical examination for the second year of high school."

"Uh..." Mao Xianzhi handed out several copies of the medical examination forms to the students sitting near the front, instructing them to distribute them: "You went through the process last year, so I won't go into detail. However, this year there will be an additional test for the heart and blood pressure. It's best not to be absent from 2 PM to 6 PM. If there are any unexpected circumstances, please ask me for leave. But since it would be troublesome to go to the city hospital for a make-up test later, I hope everyone can get it done in one go. After the test, just hand the form to the class monitor. Ji Li, come out with me for a moment."

Now that self-study has started, the corridor has become relatively quiet. A shallow puddle of water has accumulated next to the water dispenser, reflecting the shadows of the trees.

"Remember to arrive early on the day of your physical examination."

"good."

"If you're worried about people finding out, you can tell the doctor in advance."

"Um."

"Don't stay up late, don't take any medication beforehand, and don't be nervous during the process. Just take it easy."
