Just as everyone was laughing and joking, my phone suddenly rang. I picked it up and answered, "Hello?"
"Chen Yang! Where are you?" It was Qian Pan, Fang Nan's secretary at the company, speaking.
"Um...at home." I sighed. "I have some personal matters to attend to today, and I already informed my department this morning."
Qian Pan seemed completely unconcerned about my skipping work as a manager. On the phone, she spoke calmly, as if casually asking, "Can you come out now?"
"What's wrong?"
"Miss Fang is back." The voice wasn't loud, but those words instantly wiped the smile off my face! Then Qian Pan continued on the phone, "Go to the airport to pick her up."
I felt a bitterness in my voice: "Why did I have to pick her up... I'm not her assistant anymore..."
"Chen Yang." Qian Pan interrupted me on the phone: "This is what Miss Fang requested." Then she changed to a slightly gentler tone: "I don't want to say anything more... I've already said what I needed to say during our long talk last time... You should think it through yourself."
"I understand." I nodded.
Fang Nan's sudden return surprised me—I had expected her to be back in two more days. Even though I was prepared to face her again and determined to clear things up before leaving… her sudden and unprepared return, and the unexpected meeting, caught me completely off guard.
“Chen Yang…” Qian Pan hesitated for a moment, then said in a deep voice, “I suggest that if you want to say something, it’s best to wait until tomorrow… Business in Korea isn’t going well, which is why she came back early… I spoke to her on the phone, and Fang Nan seems to be in a very bad mood right now.”
Qian Pan then told me the time and flight number. I looked at the clock; it was already late, and Fang Nan's flight would probably arrive in about two hours.
I sighed and simply told everyone that I had some urgent business at the company. Although a little disappointed, Yan Di was still very understanding. This left me somewhat speechless…
Aze and Qiaoqiao stayed to continue eating. But Mutou said he needed to go to the clinic early and decided to leave with me.
I thought about it and decided that on the way to the airport, I could give him a ride to the clinic.
I went out, went downstairs, and got into the car. Mu Tou sat next to me. As soon as the car started, Mu Tou suddenly lit a cigarette, rolled down the window, took a puff, and glanced at me: "You seem to have something on your mind."
"What did you say?"
Wood smiled and said, "That phone number."
I was speechless. Woody's reactions are actually quite sharp... Although he looks "wooden," that's just his personality; in reality, Woody's observational skills are very keen!
As I drove, I sighed, "You figured it out?"
"Hmm." Wood suddenly smiled, his smile somewhat strange: "A woman?"
I hesitated for a moment: "It's a bit...not really...it's hard to explain...I feel indebted to a woman, she's been very good to me...but I don't know how to tell her...anyway, it's just hard to explain."
Wood listened quietly to me finish speaking, and then he only said one short sentence: "If you can't explain it, then don't say it."
I remained silent.
To be honest, I was a little hesitant just now. When I saw Fang Nan, what should I say?
Wood's suggestion might be more appropriate... Just say nothing, resign directly, and leave... As for the complicated feelings that have arisen between me and Fang Nan, let's not even mention them! This is obviously the easiest way.
After dropping Mu off at the clinic, I drove out of the city and onto the airport expressway, heading straight for Nanjing Lukou International Airport.
I waited in the airport lounge for more than half an hour, checking the time and calculating that Fang Nan's plane should be arriving soon. I stubbed out my cigarette, walked out of the smoking lounge, and stood at the customs exit.
I was mentally calculating what attitude I should adopt when I met Fang Nan later. A friend? A subordinate? And when should I confront her?
Is the road back long? There are just the two of us in the car...
Or, should we wait until we get back to the company?
Or should I find some time tonight to invite her to dinner, apologize to her properly, and explain my thoughts?
Both seem acceptable. Yet neither seems quite right.
I touched a bank card in my pocket... I had prepared it earlier today.
After I received the winnings, I had already prepared everything when I went to the lottery office during the day.
There's a full six million here. I'm using this money for Fang Nan, since I lost the original ring, a diamond brooch, and the 300,000 I owed her for the car accident.
Although I won a big prize, after taxes, I only actually received about six million. After losing it all, I have almost no money left. But I don't care.
I should have paid this money back to Fang Nan. I owe her, and I absolutely have to pay it back!
I checked the time; there was less than half an hour left.
But just then, my phone rang again…
I glanced at the number; I didn't recognize it. I picked it up and answered, "Hello, Manager Chen! Manager Chen!!"
The voice sounded familiar. I paused for a moment before recognizing it as the round-faced customer service girl from my department.
"Hmm. What's wrong?"
"Manager Chen, Chen Yang... It's me! Something's happened! Something's happened!" The voice on the phone sounded panicked.
I immediately said, "Don't panic... What happened? Is something wrong at the company? Tell me slowly, don't panic!"
"It's Ning Yan, something happened to Sister Ning!" The girl on the phone sounded like she was about to cry.
My heart tightened: "What happened to Ning Yan?"
The young girl's voice trembled slightly: "I...I went shopping with Sister Ningyan at noon today. On our way back to the company just now...we met...we encountered a few people...one of the men seemed to know Ningyan...they stopped us and wanted to take...take...take Sister Ningyan away...Sister Ningyan refused, and the man was about to get violent. Later, seeing the situation was bad, she agreed to go with them...Chen Yang, what should we do? Those guys didn't seem like good people. They all looked like gangsters, with tattoos on their arms...Sister Ningyan got into a car with them. Before she left, she comforted me, saying it was okay and I didn't need to call the police...and told me not to tell anyone...But I'm so scared. I thought and thought, so I had to come to you..."
"Fuck!" I couldn't help but curse.
Although I'm not entirely sure, I can at least guess who caused Ning Yan trouble! It must be that absolute scumbag!!
I took a deep breath: "Don't panic... Think carefully about what else is going on, and tell me everything that's been overlooked!"
After I asked her, the girl told me some details: the time, the place, and so on. Fortunately, she was quite meticulous; she even gave me the other party's license plate number. She also immediately gave me the address in Ningyan that I had requested.
"Alright, leave this to me." I thought for a moment: "You don't need to call the police, I'll handle this... Um, and don't say anything about it at the company."
I can understand Ning Yan's predicament. After all, this is a private matter, and Chinese people believe in keeping family scandals private. Ning Yan has always had a good image in the company and is very popular. These days, there are always people who like to gossip.
I hung up the phone, checked the time, hesitated for a few seconds, and decided that saving lives was the most important thing. Who knows what outrageous things that kind of scum would do!
I couldn't wait for Fang Nan's flight anymore, but she was in the air and her phone was definitely off, so I couldn't reach her. I could only send her a short message saying that I had an urgent matter, and then I rushed out of the airport, started the car in the parking lot, and sped onto the highway towards the city...
On the way, I thought for a moment and then made a phone call to an old friend, Awei, the former head of the brothel that was known for its glitz and glamour.
"Awei? It's me! Chen Yang."
"Fifth Brother?!" Awei's voice sounded surprised on the other end of the phone. "Fifth Brother, what do you need me for? Is there something you want me to do?"
I didn't waste any words: "Yes! Find me some people, and wait for my call... I'm going to deal with a scumbag today!"
Ah Wei laughed loudly on the other end of the phone, "Okay! Fifth Brother, just say the word! I'll blow the whistle and bring people here right away!"
Part One: In the Martial World, Not in Control of One's Own Fate, Chapter Eighty-Four: Professionals
Ning Yan lived near Longjiang in the west of the city, in a large new residential area that the government vigorously developed in the west of the city at the end of the last century.
The address wasn't too hard to find. I rushed to Ningyan's apartment complex, found her building, and looked around carefully. Sure enough, I saw a van with the license plate Su A××××× downstairs. The license plate was exactly the same as the one the girl from the company had described on the phone.
I breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed my judgment was correct. They had indeed brought Ning Yan home.
That scumbag man seems to still be trying to extort some money.
I parked my car on the street outside the residential area, took out my phone, called Awei, told him the address, and asked him to bring his men over. Then I took a cigarette out of my pocket and casually walked towards the car.
There was a man sitting in the car, probably the driver. He had a burly face and looked to be under thirty. Judging from his appearance, he was a seasoned veteran who had been around the block a long time. I walked to the car with a cigarette in my mouth, reached out and knocked on the window. The driver inside glanced at me impatiently, rolled down the window, and asked in a very standard Nanjing accent, "What is it?"
I pointed to the cigarette in my mouth, pretending to be nonchalant: "Hey buddy, can I borrow a light?"
The driver glanced at me, his eyes showing some impatience, but he still looked down to take out his lighter.
I glanced around; there weren't many people around in the neighborhood during the day. As the driver reached for my lighter, I grabbed his wrist and, before he could scream, yanked him out of the car window! Then I slashed his carotid artery in the back of his neck. He groaned, his head lolled to the side, and he passed out.
I sighed in relief; thankfully, this guy wasn't wearing a seatbelt...
I opened the car door and shoved him into the back. I clapped my hands, then followed the door number to the bottom of the building and looked up...
It seems that scumbag gathered a group of people from who-knows-where, and they seem to be seasoned veterans. They even left a lookout in the stairwell. A man was squatting in the stairwell smoking, and when he saw me coming up, he immediately stood up warily. I pretended to ignore him, casually took out a bunch of keys from my pocket, and went upstairs on my own.
This immediately eased his wariness somewhat... and besides, I was dressed in a suit, looking like a typical office worker. I even deliberately gave him a questioning look before continuing upstairs with my head down. The guy was relieved and even stepped aside to let me pass.
I walked past him, and when I reached the steps above him, I suddenly stopped, turned around, and kicked him in the head with a side kick. The guy grunted and tumbled down with a thud. He landed headfirst on the ground. I immediately rushed over, grabbed him from behind, and strangled him to silence him. Then, I pressed the key against his throat and whispered, "Don't shout!"
"Ugh..." The man's face contorted in pain, his forehead covered in cold sweat. With my hand around his neck, he was having trouble breathing. Then, I pressed a key against his throat, which startled him so much that he gasped and shut his mouth.
Where is that woman?
"What...woman?"
I snorted, pressed the key against his throat with a little more force, and said coldly, "Do you believe this key can pierce your throat?"
"Up there!" This guy seemed to be a seasoned veteran; recognizing the situation, he didn't try to argue and quickly said, "Fifth floor."
How many people are upstairs?
"……two."
I sneered, pulled a phone from his pocket, and threw it over the brick wall of the stairwell. Then I stood up and kicked him in the head, knocking him unconscious.
This kid is lying to me.
I'm pretty sure there are at least four more people upstairs!
This group seems to be seasoned extortionists. They have a driver, a lookout, and at least three more people upstairs. Generally, one person is responsible for watching over the hostage, two others for looting, and finally, there's that scumbag man—four in total!
I continued upstairs, my steps light. In this type of apartment building, there are two households on each floor. Ning Yan's apartment is on the fifth floor, on the left. I peeked out from the fourth floor; the door was closed, and I could vaguely hear voices inside. I cautiously approached the door and peered inside, just in time to hear that scumbag's voice, seemingly saying something very smug:
"...I'm telling you, you're just asking for trouble! You were so nice to have behaved yourself! You actually dared to let that guy hit me! Fine! Go ahead and hit me! Go ahead and hit me! Damn it... You better call that guy and make him bleed a little..."
I took a deep breath and knocked on the door hard.
The voices inside suddenly fell silent. I knocked twice more, and finally a gruff voice came from inside asking, "Who is it?"
I coughed and mumbled, "Collecting milk fees!"
After a moment of silence, the gruff voice snapped, "No money! Come back this afternoon!"
I took a deep breath and deliberately spoke in an impatient tone, "It's only a few dozen yuan, I can't possibly make an extra trip for you, can I? Are you going to order or not?"
A dozen seconds later, the sound of a door opening came from inside. The door was pushed open a crack, and someone behind it, peeking out with half their face, asked impatiently, "How much?"
I had already taken a step back, waiting for his door to open a crack. Before he could finish speaking, I raised my leg and kicked the door.
Bang!
The door was kicked open, and the guy behind it fell to the ground with a thud, hitting his head on the door. I rushed in and kicked him in the face again. He cried out in pain and fell backward. At this moment, I could see the situation inside the house. Ning Yan was sitting in the living room, her hands were tied, and half of her face was swollen, as if she had been slapped. And as I expected, in the room, besides the one I had kicked to the ground, there were three other guys. That scumbag was sitting next to Ning Yan, and the other two were standing on either side of the sofa.
