Chapter 68

The usually independent, aloof, and strong girl suddenly felt so warm and happy under Ling Yun's protection.

He risked his life to obtain the cultivation method for the Holy Healing Technique. And now, it's all to protect me… Ling Yun, is it really just to protect this promise you made to me? Ling Yun. The girl gently touched the silver ball pendant on her chest, and pearl-like tears flowed down her fair face once more.

Gu Xiaorou simply didn't have the courage to watch the scene after the lightning strike. She didn't know if she would collapse instantly upon seeing Ling Yun's charred corpse. Even her own mother's death hadn't caused her such overwhelming grief.

I don't know how much time has passed.

"No, Lingyun, you will definitely not die. Since the Heavenly Eye could save you once, it can definitely save you a second time. I will never give up hope." Gu Xiaorou muttered to herself, her face instantly regaining its original indifferent and resolute expression. She suddenly stood up from the sofa, walked a few steps to the door, and just as she pushed open the door, she opened the door.

A charred figure outside the door suddenly missed its target and, caught off guard, fell heavily onto the living room floor with a thud.

Gu Xiaorou was startled, but when she saw the charred figure clearly, a surge of joy immediately overwhelmed her. Her heart began to pound wildly again.

"Ling Yun! Ling Yun!" Gu Xiaorou called out instinctively, frantically helping Ling Yun's charred body to its feet.

Although she couldn't use her supernatural abilities for the time being, the girl's strength far exceeded that of several adults combined. She scooped Ling Yun up in her arms and quickly carried him into the bedroom, carefully placing him on the bed. Still in disbelief, as if in a dream, she couldn't believe that Ling Yun had survived the attack of heavenly lightning.

Ling Yun was soaked to the bone, clearly having braved the downpour to return, but he was still relatively lucid. Seeing that Gu Xiaorou was safe and sound, Ling Yun finally felt a temporary sense of relief.

Panicked, Gu Xiaorou put Ling Yun down and frantically searched the bedroom table for medicine to treat external injuries. In her haste, she forgot what medicine could possibly treat Ling Yun's wounds.

Ling Yun turned his head to look at her and said weakly, "Don't look anymore. I've already cast Holy Healing and Self-Healing spells on you. You'll be fine soon." As he spoke, the new life force within him immediately caused a sharp pain in his fragile wounds, and he cried out.

Gu Xiaorou glanced at him with pity, immediately gave up looking for medicine, walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, took Ling Yun's hand, and silently used her limited supernatural power to relieve his pain.

The snow-white sheets immediately turned black, and a soft rustling sound rang out in the quiet night. It was the sound of Ling Yun's carbonized skin peeling off. With each piece of necrotic muscle that peeled off, new skin would grow back.

"It's good that you're alive..." Gu Xiaorou said softly, "You almost gave your life to save me, I..." The girl suddenly stared at Ling Yun. Although Ling Yun looked no different from a terrifying ghost at this moment, in the girl's eyes, there was only a deep tenderness. Her eyes were crystal clear, and her tears turned into strings of pearls, dripping down her snow-white face again.

Her newly regained strength, overwhelmed by the joy of seeing the boy return alive, made her vulnerable and sensitive once again.

"Don't cry..." Ling Yun said with difficulty, his face contorted, and even though he could only utter a single word, his pain became even more intense.

“I said,” the boy managed a strained, albeit unsightly, but sincere, smile. “I will protect you.”

I will protect you!

The words that once deeply moved the young girl, after being irrigated with almost her life and blood overnight, transformed into the most beautiful melody, deeply imprinted on Gu Xiaorou's heart.

She suddenly and uncontrollably threw herself into Ling Yun's arms, tightly embracing the boy who was grimacing in pain but also extremely happy.

A silence fell over the bedroom. The boy and girl seemed to be caught in a deep and indescribable emotion, a strange feeling that infected their hearts and made them feel joyful.

The quiet morning was so profound, and so beautiful.

Even the slender figure hanging on the wall outside the bedroom window stirred slightly, revealing the flutter in her heart.

Chapter Ninety-Two: The Strange Woman

With a deafening bang, the entire bedroom window shattered instantly, the sturdy aluminum frame twisted and warped from the impact. A tall figure crashed in from the night sky.

It was a burly man dressed in the standard black uniform of the Sky Eye Society, but there was nothing on his shoulders, so he was obviously just an ordinary private of the Sky Eye Society. It was just a mystery how he had been followed here.

Gu Xiaorou was shocked and quickly stepped in front of Ling Yun, her heart sinking to the bottom. Under normal circumstances, this representative was just a private with the lowest strength and she would not take him seriously. But now, she had not yet recovered from her injuries, and Ling Yun was seriously injured. The two of them were practically powerless to resist. How could they possibly deal with a normal superhuman?

The burly man was clearly prepared. He noticed the two men's weakness and grinned, laughing loudly, "I knew it! This kid must have something going on with you, little girl. I secretly followed behind him. Haha, I was right! I didn't expect that even Captain Lister and Lieutenant Jane would die at your hands. Luckily, I wasn't strong enough to keep up with them and fell behind. I even got lost. Otherwise, I really wouldn't have gotten such a great deal."

Upon hearing this, Ling Yun couldn't help but smile wryly. He had thought all the pursuers from the Heavenly Eye Society were dead, but unexpectedly, the weakest member had survived to the end simply because he got lost. He had even managed to find his way here. He wondered if it was his bad luck or the other person's good fortune.

"Little girl, I think you have a pretty good figure. How about this, you hand over your Heavenly Eye to me, and let me play with you for one more night, then I'll let you and your little lover go, okay?" This burly man was clearly of low character. Seeing that everything was under his control, he became lustful and slowly approached Gu Xiaorou with a lewd grin.

"If you dare take another step closer, I'll take your life." Gu Xiaorou had never been harassed by such a shameless madman before. Her anger was already soaring. If it weren't for taking care of Ling Yun behind her, she would have killed this big man on the spot, even if she was seriously injured.

The burly man was taken aback upon hearing this and stopped in his tracks. He noticed a faint fluctuation of spiritual energy swirling around Gu Xiaorou. While it certainly wasn't powerful, what if she was deliberately feigning weakness to unleash a heavy blow when he approached? That was entirely possible, the burly man thought.

Rumor has it that the girl stole the Heavenly Eye treasure and possesses extraordinary skills. The young man, on the other hand, wiped out all the experts sent by his side in one fell swoop. Clean and efficient, though seriously injured, they were still alive, weren't they? He was just a lowly private, no match for these two. While the mission to retrieve the Heavenly Eye was important, his own life seemed more important.

The burly man, whose mind wasn't particularly sharp, quickly realized that Gu Xiaorou was healing and had no strength left. Otherwise, he would have already attacked.

If he were even slightly more astute, he would have known that Gu Xiaorou was truly stronger than him; otherwise, why would he only resort to verbal intimidation without actually taking action? Clearly, he was all bark and no bite.

Should he retreat or recklessly press on? The burly man was torn between these conflicting thoughts, feeling somewhat hesitant. He was unwilling to retreat; if he could retrieve the Heavenly Eye, the higher-ups in the organization would surely reward him handsomely, and he would enjoy luxurious cars, beautiful women, and unbridled pleasure. Moreover, with Captain Lister and the others all dead, the great achievement would be his alone—what an immense honor! He imagined that the snobbish members of the organization would then look at him with newfound respect, instead of constantly mocking his perceived lack of strength.

But what if they act recklessly and the other party suddenly attacks? The young man is somewhat better off, as he clearly doesn't have the strength to stand up. But this girl seems perfectly fine, completely unlike what her superior said before she left—that she was seriously injured. It's highly likely that she's set a trap for herself.

Gu Xiaorou looked at the burly man nervously, wondering what he was doing, staring blankly for so long. If her supernatural abilities were still intact, she could send him to hell instantly just by observing his idiotic blank stare.

Finally, the burly man made up his mind. As the saying goes, fortune favors the bold; there's no such thing as a free lunch. He wouldn't feel at ease without testing the waters. He decided on a light strike. If Gu Xiaorou could block it, he would turn and run—his own life was more important. If Gu Xiaorou couldn't block it, it meant she was seriously injured and unable to resist, in which case there was no need to be polite.

With his large, fan-like hands outstretched, the burly man was about to launch a fierce attack. This small room, he feared, could be easily destroyed by a single telekinetic strike; the walls and beams would crumble. His simple mind had never considered the consequences of fighting in the city. His superiors were all dead, so there was no one to restrain him.

Gu Xiaorou's pretty face darkened, and she was about to launch a lightning-fast attack, disregarding her injuries.

Suddenly, the burly man's outstretched hand froze. He took only one step forward, and his entire robust body became motionless, like a clay sculpture. Even the lewd grin on his face stopped abruptly, as if his vocal cords had been cut.

His body remained motionless, then his head turned strangely backward, all the way to 180 degrees, until the back of his head was completely exposed to Gu Xiaorou's eyes before he stopped.

Gu Xiaorou looked in surprise at the burly man's back, where a slender, jade-like hand was resting on his large, muscular vest. It seemed as if it were just a light pat.

The burly man was completely unaware that his head had become so strange, and he kept making indistinct sounds from his twisted throat: "Who dares to ambush me?"

Crackling sounds echoed from the burly man's body. His rough, ugly face was suddenly filled with extreme terror. He wanted to say something, but no sound came out. Then, his body slumped down, like a skinny sack without bones, and collapsed onto the floor like a tattered sack.

Gu Xiaorou didn't even glance at the soldier who had been turned into a pile of minced meat; she only watched warily the slender figure who had attacked the burly man.

The figure appeared to be a young woman, with long, straight, and slender legs beneath black stockings. Her waist was so thin it could be encircled by a single hand, and even the slightest movement exuded boundless allure. She wore a dark blue, form-fitting bodysuit. Her long, wavy, glossy black hair cascaded over her shoulders like clouds, and her alluring curves led up to two proudly erect breasts. She looked exceptionally hot and seductive.

The young woman's face seemed to have been specially treated, appearing blurry like a reflection in a mirror or the moon in the water, shrouded in a light mist, making it impossible for Gu Xiaorou to see clearly with her naked eye. She silently sent out a mental energy field to probe, but it only touched a few centimeters in front of the other person before disappearing as if it had sunk into the sea.
