Chapter 1: The Taste
On Friday, strong winds blew the willow branches along the roadside to one side.
Chai Qianning stopped her car at the traffic light intersection, watching the flashing red light ahead. The light emitted by the light, under the dark, cloud-covered sky, had a somewhat eerie quality.
She turned off the car's air conditioning, rolled down both windows, and looked outside. A gust of wind rushed in, lifting the ends of her hair.
At the same time, a car drove up and stopped next to her, and a graceful woman inside caught her eye.
The woman had her hands on the steering wheel, and almost at the same time as Chai Qianning looked over, the woman also looked over, their eyes meeting unexpectedly in mid-air.
Perhaps the wind was too strong and blurred people's eyes, because the woman squinted her eyes, and with a slight smile on her lips, it was as if she was winking at her.
Chai Qianning shifted her gaze, returning it to the front. The red light turned green, and she stepped on the gas and drove off, her hair billowing in the wind. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the woman's car from before also driving off in front of her.
She thought the woman would turn at some intersection ahead, but the car remained in her sight, following the same route as her.
It wasn't until she drove up to the entrance of the underground parking garage in the residential complex that Chai Qianning finally realized that this person lived in the same complex as her.
After parking the car, Chai Qianning walked to the elevator. The woman from before also came over and stood a little to the side in front of her, also waiting for the elevator.
It's not unusual to run into someone who lives in the same neighborhood, even the same building and unit, when you go out.
At that time, Chai Qianning only regarded her as a stranger passing by. When the elevator reached the basement level, the woman went in, and she followed her in.
The woman pressed the button for number 11, then turned around and asked her, "Which floor?"
Chai Qianning withdrew her hand from pressing the floor button and replied, "10th floor, thank you."
"You are welcome."
Chai Qianning stood slightly behind the woman, her eyes drawn to the woman's appearance for a few moments before she looked down at her phone.
At that time, she smelled a fragrance in the elevator. It was very faint, but she remembered it clearly. It must have been the scent emanating from a woman.
In that short time, all Chai Qianning could think about was what brand of perfume the other person was wearing. Later she realized that it was the scent of her future wife.
In particular, Chai Qianning inadvertently noticed a small green wink pendant on the keychain the woman was playing with.
The first thought that came to Chai Qianning's mind was that the other person was a lesbian, but she couldn't be completely sure.
After exiting the elevator, Chai Qianning walked to the last room in the corridor, took out her key from her bag, and opened the door. Just then, her phone rang.
A friend asked to borrow her venue to host a lesbian singles party, and Chai Qianning chatted with her for a while.
At this time of day, it would usually be bright outside, but now it was gloomy and dark inside. Chai Qianning turned on the living room light and went to the balcony to bring down the clothes while talking on the phone with a friend.
She was holding the clothes pole in one hand when the wind suddenly blew her, and she almost lost her grip on the clothes and was about to fall. Fortunately, she reacted quickly and grabbed the clothes in time.
Not far outside the window, a red plastic bag was being carried away by the wind, from one side to the other. A bed sheet from the opposite building, belonging to someone, was blown away and hung on a tree.
Chai Qianning glanced at the bed sheets hanging on the tree a few times, thinking that it was fortunate she came back early, otherwise the bed sheets hanging outside would have been ruined.
After putting away the bedsheets, she planned to close the window and prepare for the storm.
On the other end of the phone, my friend was still talking non-stop.
Chai Qianning stopped at the edge of the balcony, feeling the strong wind blowing fiercely across her face. The heat and stuffiness of the past month vanished at this moment.
Her fingers lightly rested on the railing, still warm from the sun a few hours earlier. Chai Qianning gathered her hair into a loose ponytail and held it in her hand.
Suddenly, without warning, a soft piece of fabric covered her face, blocking her view, and the fresh scent of laundry detergent wafted into her nostrils.
Before she could even react, Chai Qianning instinctively caught it with her hand.
When I received it, I was surprised to find it was a red bra.
Chai Qianning blinked, said her last words to the person on the other end of the phone, then hung up and peeked outside.
The balcony had security bars, and strands of her hair peeked out from them. Chai Qianning raised her hand to hold it, her ring and little fingers still hooked around the strap of her bra, as she peered out.
A slight sliding sound came from the window on the floor above. Chai Qianning looked up and unfortunately met the gaze of the person upstairs.
It's the woman I ran into outside earlier.
The woman lived on the eleventh floor, and she lived on the tenth floor. When they met those shimmering, watery eyes, Chai Qianning recognized her almost instantly.
The woman upstairs was looking down, and she must have seen her own underwear float into the balcony of the person downstairs, but she was powerless to do anything about it.
What an embarrassing situation.
Chai Qianning thought to herself that perhaps she shouldn't look outside; there was no need to add her to such an awkward situation.
A sound came from afar, and heavy rain swept in, causing the trees in the neighborhood to bend low and disappear into a curtain of rain.
Chai Qianning immediately pulled the window shut, but her wrists still got some rainwater on them.
Raindrops pounded against the windows, accompanied by a terrifying wind that engulfed the tall buildings.
There is nowhere to escape from anything.
Looking out from the inside, everything was gray and gloomy. Chai Qianning held the bra in her hand and was lost in thought for a moment before putting it down on the sofa.
Now all she had to do was wait for the woman upstairs to come down and ask her for her clothes back, but after about twenty minutes, she still hadn't heard a knock on the door.
The storm came and went quickly, and the light returned outside, but Chai Qianning still hadn't seen him.
Is it because you're embarrassed?
Chai Qianning went to the bedroom to find clothes, preparing to wash her hair and take a shower. As she walked through the living room with the clothes in her arms toward the bathroom, she saw the red underwear again.
Red has a strong visual impact and makes people think of how charming and elegant the owner must be.
She glanced down at her own, then at the one on the sofa; without comparison, there is no harm.
It has to be admitted tha
