El primer libro de la serie El mago del oolong ¿Quién soy yo - Capítulo 9
The three of them were surprised when they heard this, and they knew exactly what he was referring to, so they stared at him intently.
Teacher Gu continued, "Now you understand what I'm saying, right? If you're interested, come home with me, and I can tell you what really happened. Don't you want to know?"
The three hesitated when they heard they had to go home with this strange man. Li Zu thought for a moment and asked, "How do you know what happened to us?" His subconscious thought was, "Did you do this?" But he wouldn't say that.
“Hehe, that’s very simple. I can tell from your eyes that I was a psychology professor and have studied hypnosis my whole life. I can tell you right now that you—” he pointed at Li Zu and said, “have been hypnotized before, and this young lady is being hypnotized right now.”
Teacher Gu's words completely stunned them.
The three followed the man down the mountain. His home was nearby, at the foot of the mountain. It was a small courtyard with three single-story houses connected together, and a flock of chickens were kept in the gate.
Entering his room, I found it spacious, with two walls serving as large bookshelves piled high with books. The room was clean, and although there was a lot of furniture, it was all neatly arranged. There were two large windows, and beneath one of them, near the innermost window, sat a charmingly antique rocking chair.
“I often read there; the lighting is good,” Teacher Gu said, noticing Li Zu’s interest in the chair.
After entering the room, he took off his coat, then went behind the bookshelf and pressed a switch. The curtains automatically closed, and the room immediately dimmed. "Come sit over here at the table. I'll show you something so you can understand what hypnosis is."
The three obediently sat down at the table. Teacher Gu picked up a remote control from the table and pointed it at the bookshelf in front of him. A white projection screen slowly descended from the bookshelf.
Then he pressed the remote control button on the projector on the table. A video of a wild, windy scene immediately appeared on the white screen.
The film was rather short, just a vast expanse of grassland, and it ended in less than five minutes. Teacher Gu turned on the lights and asked them with a smile, "What did you see?"
“It’s just grass,” Li Zu replied on behalf of the three.
"Really?" Teacher Gu smiled, then took two pieces of paper from the bookshelf behind him, picked one out to show them. The paper only had a black-bordered circle drawn on it, nothing special. They looked at it and returned it to him.
"Now I'm going to ask you a question. You can think about it before you answer me, but don't answer verbally. Write your answers down on paper. Don't discuss them with each other. Just write down the answers you think are correct." After saying that, he pointed to the blank paper on the table and three pens that had been prepared at some point.
"Okay, my question is, if there's a word in the center of this circle on the paper, what do you think it would be? Start thinking now."
The three looked at each other, then thought for a moment and each wrote down a character on the paper.
Seeing that the three of them had stopped writing, Teacher Gu smiled and said, "Now, take a look at what each of you has written."
All three of them stretched out their writings to the center of the table, and to their surprise, they all wrote the same character: "wind".
"What's going on?" Li Zu asked in surprise.
“Is this the character?” Teacher Gu took out another piece of paper, exactly the same as the previous one, except that there was an extra “wind” character inside the circle.
All three of them were stunned. What on earth was going on?
"Hehe, don't rush, it's actually very simple. You've looked at this piece of paper with words on it a hundred times in a row, how could you not remember it? You just didn't know it. Now I'll let you see it again." After saying that, he turned off the lights and turned on the projector, but this time he didn't play the movie normally; he played it at a very slow speed.
The three were surprised to see that, in the middle of the film, images from slips of paper would flash by intermittently, disappearing quickly before appearing again.
Teacher Gu turned off the projector, turned on the lights, walked back to the table, sat down, and said to them, "This is the most basic method of hypnosis. Due to visual persistence, the eyes can see moving images, but there is a limitation: you can only remember continuous images. Like that piece of paper just now, it only flashed by at a very fast speed in the continuous images, so you didn't remember it. But this does not prevent it from entering your memory. When I take out the piece of paper with the circle, your memory will tell you what the words you just saw were."
"What will happen after being hypnotized?" Li Zu asked anxiously.
"Hypnosis is a very complex subject, and the methods of hypnosis vary, as do the durations. For example, many psychologists use short-term hypnosis to help patients with amnesia, which is the simplest form of hypnosis. More complex hypnosis involves long-term hypnosis, which is essentially implanting the hypnotic force into the subject's body. If the hypnotized person doesn't find a way to wake up, they will never wake up. Note that I'm not talking about waking up from sleep, but about waking up from hypnosis. The hypnotized person may seem no different from their usual self, but once suddenly triggered by some stimuli, they will become a completely different person."
"What other person? Who is that, the hypnotist?" Li Zu asked.
"No, hypnosis is not possession by a ghost. The other person I'm talking about is actually himself. Everyone has two sides. One side is what you show to others, the side that others see in real life. The other side is your own, the side that you can't show to others. Hypnosis is about getting the hypnotized person to bring out this side that they can't show to others."
The three of them felt a chill run down their spines. Li Zu coughed lightly and asked, "What is this 'unspeakable side,' and what is it like?"
"Good question, that's exactly what I wanted to tell you. I've studied human psychology my whole life and discovered that the side of everyone that they can't face is actually extremely pessimistic and violent. No matter what the situation, when they face it from this perspective, their first thought is to solve it with violence. And often, things that we consider ordinary are extremely pessimistic from that perspective, so pessimistic that they have to resort to violence to solve them. You could say that this is true human nature!"
"Are people inherently evil at birth?" Li Zu said in surprise.
“That’s right,” Teacher Gu said approvingly to Li Zu. “Human nature is savage and brutal. Fortunately, as higher animals, we have thought and habits. These two things are very important. Thought allows us to analyze, and habits are what we call behavioral norms. As long as a habit is generally recognized by people, we will consciously abide by it through thinking analysis. So gradually, we cover up the side of our nature and slowly form the side that can be seen by others.”
Li Zu and the other two were deeply attracted by Teacher Gu's unheard-of arguments, which seemed both distant and intimately relevant.
“Hypnosis is precisely about putting a person into a sleep-like state to do things driven by their true nature. To put it simply, it's about doing what they deepest desire!” As Teacher Gu said this, his eyes behind his glasses fixed on the three of them, as if he could see right through them. His words shook each of them. Images flashed through Li Zu's mind: his attack on Cheng Hai, Xiao Yuan's attacks on him and He Qiang, their suicides, He Qiang's self-harm—were these really the things I, Xiao Yuan, and He Qiang most wanted to do?
"So... can hypnosis be transferred?" Cheng Hai suddenly asked.
"No, it's just a simple relationship between the hypnotist and the hypnotized person, isn't it?" Teacher Gu said.
"What should be done with the hypnotized person? How to break the hypnosis?" Li Zu asked.
"That's not necessarily true. Every hypnotist has their own hypnosis method, but every hypnosis method has its corresponding arousal method. Only the hypnotist who designs the hypnosis knows this; it's impossible for others to guess it."
“But you said I was hypnotized, meaning I was awakened, but I didn’t do anything. How is that possible?” Li Zu asked anxiously.
"Hypnotists often hide the awakening method within the hypnotic method. You may have just happened to do the right thing to awaken the hypnotist and were awakened unconsciously."
"So you said she's being hypnotized, do you have any way to wake her up?" Cheng Hai asked, pointing at He Qiang. At this point, he completely believed the man in front of him, and his voice was clearly pleading.
Teacher Gu looked at He Qiang, hesitated, then sighed and said, "It's not that I don't want to help you, but I really can't do anything about it. The one who tied the knot must untie it."
Cheng Hai suddenly stood up angrily, pointed at Teacher Gu and shouted, "You're talking nonsense! This hypnotist is Wan Shan. He's your student, and you taught him all his hypnosis techniques, didn't you? Since his methods came from you, how could you not know how to solve them? You're clearly colluding with Wan Shan to harm us, aren't you?"
Cheng Hai's sudden action startled everyone. Li Zu hurriedly tried to pull him away, but Cheng Hai, his face flushed, forcefully broke free from Li Zu's grasp. He pulled He Qiang to Teacher Gu, showed him He Qiang's injured hand, ripped off the bandage, and shoved it in front of him, saying sternly, "Look at this! Look at this! This is the result of your hypnosis! Does that mean she was truly herself last night, cutting herself repeatedly and then rubbing salt into her wounds? I think your utterly depraved hypnosis is your true nature!"
Overwhelmed with emotion, Cheng Hai eventually lost his voice. Seeing the red, swollen, and festering wounds on He Qiang's wrists, his heart ached as if it were being torn apart.
Teacher Gu watched them calmly, completely unaffected by Cheng Hai's agitation. Only after Li Zu persuaded Cheng Hai to sit down did she continue unhurriedly, "I understand your feelings, and I sympathize with this young lady's situation. Yes, Wan Shan is my student; I taught him hypnosis. The hypnosis you two experienced was one of the methods I taught him, the one you were playing with in the video earlier. However, I don't know which specific method of awakening he was hiding."
"Then why are you telling us all this? And why did you call us here? If you don't want to help us, then what is your purpose?" Cheng Hai looked at Teacher Gu aggressively.
“I can tell at a glance what type of hypnosis you have been subjected to. Although I cannot wake you up, the awakening method for this type of hypnosis is usually very simple. I called you here to help you. I want you to understand this type of hypnosis and then find the answer to awakening yourselves. Because the awakening method for this type of hypnosis is usually achieved by the hypnotized person waking up themselves, just like this young man, who awakened himself.”
"So what should we do?" Li Zu asked quickly, afraid that Cheng Hai might say something impulsive again.
“You have to ask yourself that question. Think carefully about what you did after you were hypnotized, and what this young lady didn’t do. Why not let her try it too? Maybe that will help you find the answer,” Teacher Gu said sincerely, looking at Li Zu.
"But I've done so many things, and they might not all be suitable for her."
"This is fate. This is all the help I can give you."
Li Zu stood up, reached out and shook hands with Teacher Gu, "Thank you, we'll take our leave now."
Teacher Gu saw them to the door, then suddenly said, "Don't resent Wan Shan. Perhaps he didn't expect things to turn out so badly."
Cheng Hai was about to say something when Li Zu stopped him, and the three of them turned and left.
fourteen
After watching the three disappear from sight, Teacher Gu returned to the house. He poured himself a glass of water, sat down in the rocking chair, took a sip, closed his eyes, and pushed off the ground with his foot, causing the rocking chair to slowly rock.
Only then did he speak, as if talking to himself, "They're gone. Why didn't you tell them how to awaken them, Wanshan?"
At that moment, a voice rang out in the air: "Because Wu Xiaoyuan didn't come. Why didn't she come? The four of them were together! Could it be... Hahaha... She may have seen the true nature of humanity as I intended, and understood that appearances aren't everything, so she left them. Hahaha... I succeeded... Hahaha..." The shrill laughter echoed in the room. Teacher Gu frowned and asked again, "Then, Wan Shan, can you tell me what your method of awakening is?"
"Hahaha... They'll find out. Actually, they taught me that method. The methods they give to others are their own methods, hahaha..." The laughter faded away. Teacher Wu also drifted off to sleep. At his student Wan Shan's request, he had been waiting for Li Zu and the others halfway up the mountain all day; he was exhausted from standing all day.
Li Zu's car sped along the highway.
“I remember now,” Cheng Hai suddenly said, “that HYP.”
"What did you say?" Li Zu glanced at Cheng Hai with a heavy heart.
"That format, HYP stands for HYPNOSIS, which means hypnosis," Cheng Hai said.
"So what if you think about it now? He Qiang's hypnosis hasn't been broken yet," Li Zu said coldly.
Cheng Hai instantly deflated. He Qiang, who had seemed detached from the situation, hadn't listened to their conversation, her eyes glazed over as she stared blankly out the car window, as if she had merely left her body in the car, her spirit already gone. She understood what Teacher Gu had said; he was right. Pessimism and violence could indeed represent human nature. Cheng Hai told her that she had been rubbing salt into her wounds that night—wasn't that exactly what she had been doing all along? Ever since that day at the library when she saw Li Zu, who had stood opposite her for so long, resolutely turn away, the wound in her heart had reopened. How many times in her dreams had she been rubbing salt into that wound, bit by bit? Why did Li Zu attack Cheng Hai? Did he hate Cheng Hai too? What about Xiao Yuan? Did she hate herself? Did she hate Li Zu too? Did she know that Li Zu also loved her? Did Li Zu really love her too?
He Qiang couldn't help but glance at the rearview mirror. Li Zu was focused on driving.
Cheng Hai spoke up: "I haven't received that email yet, but maybe it'll be my turn soon." His voice trembled slightly. He had been thinking about Teacher Gu's words, and he was afraid because he didn't know what his true, other side might do. Kill Li Zu? Impossible! Could it be He Qiang? Even less likely! Suicide? Why? I don't want to die. He Qiang and I have only been married for a few months. It's been so difficult. Why would I want to die?
Li Zu seemed not to hear Cheng Hai's words. He kept thinking, "Why would my other side want to kill Cheng Hai? He's my good friend! Although he married He Qiang, I genuinely wished them well. I wanted to see them happy. If my good friend and loved one are happy, that's more important than my own happiness! But why? Am I inherently a selfish person? Xiao Yuan has already died for me. I must save He Qiang, I must let them live happily. I must find a way to awaken He Qiang. I know I can, because I've experienced it myself..."
"I've got it, I've got it..." Li Zu slammed on the brakes, the car skidded, and came to a sudden stop. Li Zu looked at Cheng Hai and He Qiang with inexplicable excitement.
"What are you thinking about?" Cheng Hai asked, puzzled.
"The way to wake her up, He Qiang is saved, she's saved..." Li Zu grabbed Cheng Hai's clothes and shouted, "It's our own method! I did it, Xiao Yuan didn't, but I've thought of it... It must be it... It must be that one!" After saying that, he started the car again, twisted the steering wheel hard, turned the car around, and sped back the way he came.
"Where are you going now?" Cheng Hai asked.
"Let's find an internet cafe."
