Kapitel 18

"How could you just barge into someone else's room like that!" Yang Ke tried to stop him, but it was too late.

Ye Xun rummaged around on Yang Ke's desk and suddenly spotted the book Tong Tong had bought for him. She remembered the sticker inside and reached for it. Yang Ke tensed, afraid Ye Xun would discover the secret, and rushed forward to grab it. With all four hands pulling, the book was torn in two.

"Alright, here you go!" Yang Ke shouted, throwing the book to the ground.

"Yang Ke, what are you yelling about? It's just a book!" Ye Xun said, feeling wronged. "I'll give it to you!"

"Can you afford to pay for this? It took me a long time to get it!" Yang Ke was losing control of his emotions. "Why are you always going against me? Why are you always causing trouble?"

"I know why you're so angry!" Ye Xun cried, pointing at the sticker. "It's because someone gave you this book, it's because of that! I knew all along!"

Ye Xun pushed open the door and ran out. Yang Ke, in a panic, chased after her closely.

"Yang Ke, get away from me!" Ye Xun cried out. "I don't need your concern, just get away from me!"

Ignoring Ye Xun's cries, Yang Ke continued to follow closely behind her. Ye Xun was enraged and turned to push and punch Yang Ke, but Yang Ke refused to budge.

"Get away! I told you to get away! Did you hear me?!" Ye Xun's voice was hoarse from crying, echoing in the empty square.

Yang Ke looked helplessly at Ye Xun. They had argued countless times since they met, but this was the most intense one, one he himself didn't know how to control. Yang Ke's mind was blank; he lacked even the most basic ability to think. He let Ye Xun hit him, let her shout in his ear. He loved Ye Xun, but now this was the only way he could share her pain.

Tong Tong pushed open the half-open door and walked in from outside.

"Yang Ke, are you there?" Tong Tong asked.

The room was empty, no one was there. Tong Tong walked into Yang Ke's bedroom and was shocked to see books scattered all over the floor. Suddenly, she realized she had stepped on something. Tong Tong bent down and picked it up. She froze, and tears rolled down her face. It was the book he had given to Yang Ke.

"Why?" Tong Tong muttered to herself, tears falling onto her books.

Ye Xun cried herself to sleep, and she leaned weakly on Yang Ke's shoulder, letting him do as she pleased.

"Why did you follow me out? Don't you hate me?" Ye Xun asked.

"I'm afraid you'll do something foolish!" Yang Ke said worriedly.

"How could someone as smart as me do something stupid!" Ye Xun's defiant nature resurfaced. "You're the one who's been doing stupid things! You know you like someone but you don't dare to say it, and you've hurt everyone! You're the stupid one!"

"Okay! It's me, it's me!" Yang Ke said softly. "I know I'm never right, just like you said, boys are always wrong in front of girls!"

Upon hearing this, Ye Xun smiled through her tears.

Yang Ke finally felt relieved and said, "But you really did make a mistake tonight!"

"Why do you say I'm wrong? Even if I am wrong, you were wrong first!" Ye Xun said, glaring at him.

“That book was a gift from Tong Tong. She’ll be upset if she finds out!” Yang Ke said. “We’re all her good friends. What we did was too much for her!”

"Yang Ke, why do we always think of others first?" Ye Xun asked. "We always hide ourselves from others! Is that right? Is that fair to others?"

Yang Ke nodded, extended his hand to Ye Xun, and looked at her with a smile.

Ye Xun reached out her hand, hovering it over Yang Ke's, and asked, "What does this mean?"

"It doesn't mean anything!" Yang Ke said.

"If it doesn't mean anything, then forget it!" Ye Xun said, trying to pull her hand back, but Yang Ke grabbed it first, and Ye Xun pretended to pull it back a few times.

"If we really pull them back, we may never have the chance to shake hands and make peace again!" Yang Ke said.

"Sure! What's so great about that! We've always been rivals anyway!" Ye Xun said with a smile.

“If you say that, I’m going to get angry!” Yang Ke said.

Ye Xun deliberately feigned indifference and asked, "So what if you're angry?"

“If I get angry, I’ll take my hand back!” Yang Ke said.

"Go ahead and try, I don't care!" Yang Ke gently pulled his hand back, but Ye Xun quickly grabbed it tightly and mimicked Yang Ke's tone, saying, "If you really pull it back, maybe we'll never have a chance to shake hands and make peace again!"

Chapter 32 A Bitter Love Song

Yang Ke smiled, then suddenly fell into deep thought again.

"What are you thinking about?" Ye Xun asked.

"We've made peace, but what about the others?" Yang Ke said. "Who among us is going to explain things to them?"

"Of course it's you!" Ye Xun said with a smile. "Your task is very difficult!"

"I think ladies should have priority!" Yang Ke said with a bitter face.

"Whatever!" Ye Xun said. "Any of your theories is suitable for that eternal and unchanging truth!"

The two walked back together, and as they passed a water bar, they heard singing coming from inside. They stopped and listened quietly; the sound was from a radio program requesting songs.

"I never expected that anyone would actually like this way of doing things!" Yang Ke said. "Maybe no one will even hear it after it's lit!"

"You don't understand, that's what romance is!" Ye Xun said, placing her phone in Yang Ke's hand and blinking at him.

Yang Ke shook his head helplessly and said, "It's a very popular program, so let's not cause trouble!"

Ye Xun didn't say a word, but stared intently at Yang Ke. Yang Ke sighed and helplessly picked up the phone.

Tong Tong sat blankly in the bar, her soul seemingly lost. Everything that had happened today had been too sudden. She thought she was getting closer and closer to Yang Ke, that she had firmly grasped his arm, but suddenly, the rope she had relied on for so long snapped. And everything happened so suddenly, catching her completely off guard. The instant she saw the book, Ye Xun felt the world spinning; she almost fainted in Yang Ke's bedroom. But she held on and calmly walked out of Yang Ke's bedroom. But Tong Tong could feel her legs were weak; every step felt like walking on cotton.

Tong Tong glanced around the various seats in the bar. On this summer night, almost every table was occupied by a couple; she was the only one feeling lonely and alone. Tong Tong stared wide-eyed at the couples as they requested songs for their loved ones. The music, amplified by the speakers, reverberated throughout the small bar, vibrating in everyone's ears.

Host: Which song would this listener like to request?

Listener: What's the next song?

Host: It's a song by Nicholas Teo, called "When You're Lonely, Who Do You Think Of?"

Listener: Okay, then I'll request this song!

Host: Who are you going to dedicate this song to?

Listener: I'm sending this to a girl who's standing right next to me right now. I wish her happiness every day!

Host: Okay! I think she must have heard your blessings, and also the blessings transmitted through the airwaves. I think you two must be a couple. I wish you happiness too! Now let's listen to this song together…

Tong Tong listened quietly. Suddenly, she realized the voice on the radio was so familiar, as if the person lived right beside her. A melodious song began, and Tong Tong turned her head to see Yang Ke and Ye Xun standing outside the door. The bar's colorful lights flashed incessantly, and Yang Ke and Ye Xun stood bathed in their glow, smiling. Little did they know that Tong Tong was sitting in the dim light, watching them intently. Their faces radiated happiness, while Tong Tong's face was streaked with tears…

Tong Tong watched as Yang Ke raised his phone, and then her phone vibrated violently, making her tremble. She didn't have the courage to answer the call. Seeing Yang Ke and Ye Xun huddled together, she had a premonition of what Yang Ke would say on the phone. Perhaps, with the start of the call, everything between her and Yang Ke would be over.

But Yang Ke never put down his phone, and Tong Tong's phone on the table was shaking and spinning incessantly, its colorful screen sending chills down one's spine...

"Hello!" Tong Tong finally answered the phone, her voice trembling.

"Tong Tong, why are you only answering the phone now?" Yang Ke asked.

"I only realized it when my phone was on vibrate. I'm sorry!"

"Tong Tong, I'd like to talk to you about something. Do you have time?" Yang Ke asked hesitantly.

Tong Tong hesitated for a moment. She knew she could never escape this calamity, so she said, "Okay, where?"

"Let's meet at the water bar, I'll be waiting for you here!" Yang Ke said.

“Okay!” Tong Tong said. She watched Yang Ke and Ye Xun part intimately at the door, and then quietly left through the back door of the bar.

Outside the door lay a vast expanse of darkness, which overwhelmed Tong Tong, leaving her utterly disoriented. She was completely lost in this world. The inky blackness, thick with moisture, enveloped her, making her feel as if she were drowning in the ocean. She was almost suffocating, and tears streamed down her face relentlessly, like streaks of blood overflowing. With each drop, a piece of her strength crumbled…

Tong Tong stood at the entrance of the water bar to calm herself down, and only after feeling fully confident did she walk in through the front door. Yang Ke was waiting for her inside, and when he saw her come in, he quickly stood up to greet her.

"What brings you to invite me for coffee today?" Tong Tong asked with a smile. "You don't have something to ask of me, do you?"

"Does that mean I can only buy you coffee when I need something from you?" Yang Ke said with a smile, though he looked a little embarrassed.

“If that’s the case, I can accept it!” Tong Tong said.

"Tong Tong, what have you been busy with lately?"

"What else could I be busy with?" Tong Tong said. "I'm about to start my internship, so of course I'm busy organizing my files and looking for some good companies online!"

"Have you decided where to go?" Yang Ke asked.

"Not yet!" Tong Tong said, "Anyway, we'll just be drifting around to the ends of the earth! When I entered university, I was full of hope, but when I was about to graduate, I realized what hardship meant, and then all my dreams came true!"

Yang Ke remained silent for a while before finally deciding to tell Ye Xun about his affair. He knew that the longer this matter dragged on, the more serious the consequences might be.

Chapter 33 The Continuous Rain of Love

Updated: 2008-07-01 18:35:01 Words: 0

"Tong Tong, I actually have something I want to tell you today!" Yang Ke said hesitantly.

Tong Tong knew what Yang Ke wanted to say, and she knew he had difficulty speaking, so she took the initiative and said, "Yang Ke, there's something else I want to tell you!"

"What's wrong?" Yang Ke gave up for the time being and had no choice but to listen to Tong Tong's explanation.

"I used to think I was really reckless, but now that I'm about to start my internship, I realize I should really start planning for the future!" Tong Tong said. "So, I've made a decision—I won't date in college!"

"Really?" Yang Ke asked skeptically.

"Of course it's true!" Tong Tong said earnestly. "And that's not all. For example, we should save money by living frugally and saving more for starting a business; we should be serious about our work and strive for maximum efficiency... But the most important thing now is to take the rest of our university life seriously and not leave any regrets!"

Yang Ke listened quietly, somewhat disbelieving Tong Tong's words, but Tong Tong's face was serious, without the slightest hint of pretense.

"How about it? Yang Ke, I've grown up!" Tong Tong said with a smile. "You and Ye Xun used to say I was like a little kid, and now I'm going to show you!"

"Yes! It seems you've really grown up!" Yang Ke said with a smile.

Tong Tong couldn't keep up the act any longer. She knew that if she dragged it out any longer, everything would be exposed. She took out her phone and gently pressed the ringtone.
