I won't be your doll - Chapter 17

Chapter 17

With another light press of the remote, Bi Kaiyun turned off the TV, then leaned back in his chair, silently muttering to himself:

"If I could meet that murderer, I would fight to the death to avenge my son!"

As he spoke, he squeezed the cigarette butt in his hand tightly, then threw it out the window. The cigarette butt fell four stories and landed squarely on a boy's head.

"Ouch! That hurts!"

Zhong Lei suddenly screamed, then collapsed, clutching his head. Yu Kai, who was nearby, saw this and went over to ask:

"What's wrong, Lei Zi?"

Zhong Lei didn't say anything, but kept rubbing his hair with his left hand and pointing with his right hand to the still-smoking cigarette butt that had just fallen to the ground. Yu Kai couldn't help but chuckle and said:

"You're so lucky, you hit the jackpot right away!" Then he chuckled again, a very wicked chuckle.

The sudden pain quickly subsided, and Zhong Lei straightened up, reaching out with his claws to grab Yu Kai's neck. With a slight pull, Yu Kai quickly cried out, "Great hero, spare my life!" Zhong Lei's claws retracted and stopped halfway.

"Alright, cough! Cough! This is Beiqiao Village. Hmm, this building is number 74. That big-mouthed driver said he lives in 201, so Bi Bin's uncle should be in 202. Let's go up and take a look!"

Zhong Lei nodded, then headed straight for the second stairwell. The two tall men practically leaped up in two strides to room 202. Yu Kai knocked, and after a short while, a hoarse male voice came from inside.

"Who is it?"

This time, Zhong Lei spoke first.

"Hello, Uncle, do you know Bi Bin?"

After a while, the peephole on the door went dark, clearly indicating that the owner had been peering through it to see who was coming. A moment later, an impatient voice came from inside.

"I don't know him, I haven't known him for a long time!"

Zhong Lei and Yu Kai exchanged a glance. It seemed the person inside wasn't Bi Bin's uncle, but their tone of voice was so strange. This piqued Zhong Lei's curiosity again, so he asked:

"So, are you his uncle?"

This time, however, the person inside was not so patient; the voice was like a roar.

"Didn't I tell you? I don't know him! I don't know him! Get out of my door! Don't you dare bring bad luck on me!"

Both of them were taken aback by this treatment, but there was nothing they could do but turn around and walk back. However, as soon as they took a step, they heard a "click" from behind as the door lock clicked. They were both surprised again. What was going on?

But when they turned around, to their even greater surprise, Bi Bin was standing in the doorway, smiling at the two of them.

"You call me uncle? Haha!"

Zhong Lei and Yu Kai's expressions both darkened. They were about to strike simultaneously to kill the young man when he preemptively spoke:

“Still standing outside? Come in and sit down!” Bi Bin’s face was still beaming with a smile, completely oblivious to the danger approaching him.

Seeing the enthusiastic Bi Bin, the anger in their hearts immediately lessened by half. Bi Bin had already turned and gone inside. The two exchanged a glance and followed him in.

This is a very simple two-bedroom apartment. The interior is simply furnished. In the small living room, there is a simple sofa set. In front of the sofa is a small round coffee table with a bucket of steaming instant noodles on it, which wafts out a delicious aroma. This makes Zhong Lei and Yu Kai feel the urge to kill the noodles and then quickly grab them.

Opposite the sofa, against the wall, was a television set on a meter-high TV stand, currently playing a horror movie. The eerie images, combined with the dark atmosphere of the room, sent chills down Zhong Lei and Yu Kai's spines. Meanwhile, Bi Bin was busy in the kitchen, muttering to himself.

"I don't have anything good to eat here. Your arrival was quite sudden. Next time, you must let me know in advance so I can prepare properly. I was going to treat you to a meal, but today I can only make something simple. I hope you won't mind. My place is a bit humble..."

The two of them could see Bi Bin busy sitting on the sofa, chopping something on the cutting board or taking something out of the refrigerator, as if he knew the place very well.

Yu Kai looked around and suddenly realized something. This was his uncle's house. Did he often stay here? Also, he was injured not long ago, so how come he's so energetic now? He whispered a few words to Zhong Lei, who nodded and then asked:

"Bi Bin! Stop what you're doing! You're injured! Come here and let's talk!"

Bi Bin remained busy, without turning his head.

"I'm not injured at all, I'm perfectly fine..." He stopped abruptly before he could finish speaking, and before Zhong Lei's expression could change, he said in a slightly different tone:

"Oh, you mean during the basketball league! It was a minor injury, it healed in a few days!"

Minor injury? A minor injury warranting an ambulance? Yu Kai and Zhong Lei thought this almost simultaneously. However, Zhong Lei, staring at Bi Bin's busy back, continued:

"Then you can go back to class next month, right?"

Bi Bin still didn't turn around, only giving a vague "hmm".

Then, the room fell silent, with only the terrifying background music playing from the television. Zhong Lei and Yu Kai huddled on the sofa, enduring the horrifying atmosphere. However, while feeling fearful, they suddenly felt sleepy. Zhong Lei, in particular, suddenly felt incredibly weak and tired. But then a thought flashed through his mind: he couldn't sleep!

When he suddenly opened his blurry eyes, he suddenly realized that Bi Bin was quietly walking towards him and Yu Kai, his face bearing a strange expression that seemed to be both crying and laughing, and occasionally revealing annoyance. Zhong Lei couldn't help but feel a chill in his heart and blurted out:

"Bi Bin! What's wrong with you?!"

Upon hearing this, Bi Bin shuddered noticeably, as if he were extremely cold.

"Oh, it's nothing. I heard no noise from the living room, so I came to check. If you're sleepy, go to your bedroom to sleep. Did you stay up all night last night? You seem so tired." She added a question at the end.

“No,” Zhong Lei shook his head, then said:

"Where do you live? Isn't this your uncle's house?"

Bi Bin chuckled and said:

"Why are you asking this?"

Zhong Lei smiled as well:

"Would you like to visit your house again? Is your uncle not home?"

Bi Bin nodded.

"Yes, my uncle went to the south to do business, so this house is empty. He's been very kind to me, so he left me the key and let me come over occasionally. So if I have a fight with my family, I'll stay here for a day or two by myself."

“Oh, I see!” Zhong Lei replied.

"You're living the good life, aren't you? You even have a place to put your girlfriend when you bring her home!" Yu Kai chuckled maliciously from the side.

“Get lost! My house is just upstairs from yours. The old man could come to check on you anytime. If you were given the chance, would you dare?” Bi Bin said with a laugh.

Zhong Lei chuckled, inwardly laughing too, knowing exactly where his home was. Haha!

"Shall we go up and pay a visit to your father?" Zhong Lei said with a smile.

"Oh, that's fine then. I won't go up with you. Be sure to come down for dinner later! I'm going to show off my cooking skills!" She finished speaking and flashed her bear-paw-like hands.

Zhong Lei laughed heartily.

"Of course!"

Then he called Yu Kai to say goodbye to Bi Bin and went out.

Zhong Lei climbed the stairs in silence, and Yu Kai followed quietly. He didn't see Bi Bin's expression, nor did he know why Zhong Lei was silent, but he still kept quiet and didn't ask any pointless questions. Perhaps this is what true friends are like!

Climbing two floors was a piece of cake for the two tall people; they took only two or three steps to get up.

They arrived at room 402 in no time. Zhong Lei hesitated for a moment, then glanced back at Yu Kai. Yu Kai gestured with his eyes for him to knock.

Zhong Lei then knocked on the door a few times. After what seemed like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing a gaunt face that vaguely resembled Bi Bin's. Presumably, this was Bi Bin's father. A thought flashed through his mind, and Zhong Lei immediately asked:

"Excuse me, is this Bi Bin's home?"

He saw the middle-aged man's burly body visibly tremble, and then heard the reply:

"Yes, who are you?"

Zhong Lei and Yu Kai stepped forward simultaneously. Zhong Lei introduced himself:

"We are Bi Bin's classmates. We saw that Bi Bin was injured during the competition and were very worried. So we took advantage of the monthly break to visit him. We are relieved to know that Bi Bin is alright. We came here specifically to say hello to you!"

Bi Kaiyun was completely confused, but since the young man in front of him seemed to be there to greet him, he politely invited him into the house.

"Oh, thank you, please come in and sit down!" Zhong Lei didn't refuse and followed Yu Kai into the house.

The house is structured the same as downstairs, but it's very tidy and fully furnished, giving it a homey feel, unlike downstairs which looks like an emergency shelter.

Bi Kaiyun gestured for the two to sit down, then went to pour himself some water. He figured the child's mother was still crying in the inner room, so he decided not to call her, as it wouldn't be good if the child's classmates saw them. So he said to Zhong Lei:

"Please have a seat. I'll get you some water. There's fruit on the coffee table; help yourselves!"

After saying that, he turned and went into the kitchen. Zhong Lei had just sat down on the sofa when he heard this, but immediately stood up again and said:

"Uncle, please don't trouble yourself. We'll just sit for a bit and then leave. Bi Bin is waiting for us to eat!"

Upon hearing this, Bi Kaiyun, who had just picked up the kettle, was momentarily stunned, and the kettle clattered onto the gas stove. How could such a polite young man say something so offensive! His temper was many times more fiery than Bi Bin's, and upon hearing such a seemingly joking remark, he instantly flew into a rage!

He rushed out of the kitchen and yelled at the two young men:

"What did you say! Say it again!"

Zhong Lei was also taken aback by Bi Kaiyun's sudden change. He had been so amiable just a moment ago, and now he had become a completely different person! He couldn't help but become a little reserved.

“I said, Bi Bin is still waiting for us to eat.”

Bi Kaiyun could no longer contain himself and was about to rush forward to teach these two rude boys a lesson, but his adult composure made him reconsider. His child had only recently passed away, and besides, they were in his own home; he should restrain himself. So, suppressing his anger, he pointed to the door:

"You two bastards, get out of here, get out!"

The final roar startled Zhong Lei and Yu Kai. Although they had a million questions in their minds, out of respect for their elder, they walked towards the door under the furious glare of the enraged Bi Kaiyun.

At this moment, Sun Yonghong pushed open the bedroom door and came out. Her eyes were swollen like peaches. She looked at her angry husband and the two young men standing in the doorway. It turned out she had fallen asleep from crying, but her husband's shout had startled her awake, so she came out to see what had happened.

"What happened? Who are these two?"

When Bi Kaiyun saw his wife come out, he suppressed his anger and said:

"They claim to be Binzi's classmates, but I think they're just here to cause trouble."

Zhong Lei first greeted Sun Yonghong.

"Hello, Auntie!" Sun Yonghong nodded in greeting.

Then he turned and voiced his question.

"Uncle, we came to see you. Why do you treat us this way? If we have done or said anything wrong, please point it out to us."

Bi Kaiyun snorted coldly and said:

"Who did you just say was waiting for you to eat?"
