Chapter 4

Li Xu lowered his head innocently, looking at the ground. Suddenly, he saw a pool of bright red blood on the ground, and Chen Lan was lying there, looking at him with grief and indignation. Li Xu was startled and took a few steps back. By then, Gu Xing and the others had already walked far away.

Li Xu looked at them, then at the ground, but Chen Lan's body was gone. He dared not stay any longer and hurriedly followed Gu Xing and the others.

The next day, Li Xu and Zhang Da were eating their meal in the canteen as usual. Li Xu asked Zhang Da, "Where are Da Kai and Gu Xing?"

"Let's sleep in."

Zhang Da ate quickly, ignoring him.

Li Xu ignored everyone and continued talking non-stop. He was only halfway through when Chen Lan walked past him. He was so startled he let out a scream. Li Xu didn't dare look at Chen Lan and lowered his head to eat.

"What brings you here, benefactor?" Li Xu asked.

Gu Xing said with a wry smile, "We're going to Yang Mian's house for dinner this afternoon. Let's go over there and sit down first. Also, Yang Yi is back."

"Oh, I'll go." Li Xuyi replied excitedly when he heard that he was going to Yang Mian's house for a meal, knowing that he would definitely have a good meal.

"Then hurry up, Da Kai and Zhang Da are waiting outside the school gate," Gu Xing urged.

When the two arrived at the school gate, Gu Xing immediately said, "Li Xu, you sissy, you're always causing trouble." Gu Xing laughed and said, "'White Bone Demon' was just practicing Taoism in the dormitory, doing serious business."

Yang Mian then recalled some fragmented memories from the day before yesterday and said, "I remember going back to school the day before yesterday to look for you guys. I think I was seeing some hallucinations, but I can't remember anything else. Do you guys remember?"

Gu Xing only knew that Yang Mian had come back to the dormitory to look for them, but he didn't know what had happened to Yang Mian that night. He only told Yang Mian what they had heard from the gossipy woman next door when they went to Yang Mian's house the next day.

After finishing their meal, Gu Xing and Da Kai stayed at Yang Mian's place to continue chatting, while Zhang Da and Li Xu went back to school first.

As soon as Zhang Da got back to the dormitory, he went to the bathroom to take a shower. Li Xu sat on the bed feeling bored and wanted to pick up a novel to read, but then he remembered that he had taken it to the rooftop last time and forgot to bring it back. But when he thought about what he had seen last time, he felt a chill run down his spine.

After thinking for a while, Li Xu called out to Zhang Da, who was taking a shower, "Zhang Da, let's go up to the rooftop for a walk later."

A voice came from the bathroom: "What! Are you crazy? Why did you go up to the roof for no reason?"

Li Xu called out again, "Are you going or not?"

"I won't go," Zhang Da replied firmly.

"Go ahead."

"Sissy, if you want to go, go up there yourself."

Having no other choice, Li Xu went upstairs alone. When he reached the rooftop, the lights seemed a little brighter than usual. He quickly found the novel he had forgotten to take last time. Just as he was about to leave, he heard a sound coming from the stairwell door. He instinctively hid again. He saw a man and a woman go upstairs and walk to the railing. Li Xu recognized them clearly; it was Fang Lei and Chen Lan again. Li Xu immediately took out a string of Buddhist prayer beads and began to chant in his mind.

Fang Lei kissed Chen Lan again, kissing her for a long time. He then lowered his hands and touched Chen Lan's legs, before pressing her forward and leaning her against the railing.

Li Xu thought to himself: Fang Lei, Fang Lei, hurry up and push her down so everyone can leave quickly.

But this time, to Li Xu's surprise, Fang Lei held Chen Lan and kissed her for a long time without actually harming her. Li Xu then remembered the scene from last time and didn't want to see it again, but he didn't have the courage to step forward and stop them. As Li Xu was struggling internally, he saw Fang Lei lift Chen Lan up with both hands. Upon seeing this, Li Xu had an immediate reaction—he rushed out.

Fang Lei immediately put Chen Lan down, and Chen Lan quickly straightened her clothes. After a while, the two of them stood up awkwardly, staring intently at Li Xu. Li Xu was at a loss for what to do. The three of them stood there dumbfounded for a minute. Suddenly, Li Xu rushed downstairs, throwing out a single sentence: "Bay."

Fang Lei really wanted to chase after this uninvited guest and beat him up, but thinking of Chen Lan, he went over to comfort her. Then he put his arm around her waist and kissed her. After kissing for a while, he started to unbutton his shirt. At this moment, Chen Lan pushed him away forcefully. Fang Lei then apologized and said, "I'm sorry, I couldn't control myself."

Fang Lei then gently took Chen Lan's hand and said, "Why don't we go to my dorm? They're all out tonight." Chen Lan shook her head.

"I don't think that lunatic will come back." After Fang Lei finished speaking, he tried to hug Chen Lan again, but Chen Lan kept backing away and shook off Fang Lei's hand.

After Fang Lei came down from the second floor, Gu Xing took Li Xu's hand and said, "Congratulations, you really saw a couple being affectionate." He then laughed with Zhang Da and walked back to the dormitory together. Li Xu couldn't help but laugh too. Then, he asked about Da Kai. Gu Xing said, "Da Kai seems a little drunk. He insisted on staying at Yang Mian's place. Yang Mian was extremely nervous and told Yang Yi to make sure the doors and windows were locked before going to sleep. Da Kai protested, 'Do I look like that kind of person?' Yang Mian said, 'Very much so.'"

After listening to Gu Xing's story, everyone laughed for a while before turning off the lights and going to sleep.

The next day, Gu Xing, Li Xu, Zhang Da, and others went to the canteen and found Fang Lei eating alone. Li Xu kept his head down, afraid that Fang Lei would recognize him. Gu Xing talked about what happened the night before, and the three of them chuckled for a while. After they finished eating, Fang Lei was still alone, but Chen Lan was nowhere to be seen.

Just as they were about to leave the cafeteria, they saw Chen Lan walk to another seat and sit down to eat alone. It was obvious that they had broken up.

Chapter Three: The Girl in the Dream

The girl approached Gu Xing. He couldn't see her face clearly in his daze, but he could smell a faint fragrance of her hair and the unique scent of a young girl. The girl gently held Gu Xing's hand, and Gu Xing felt the warmth of her soft skin on his hand. It was so gentle. The girl then leaned closer to Gu Xing's ear and whispered something in his ear. He couldn't hear it clearly, but Gu Xing knew how charming her voice was.

After the girl finished speaking, she grinned and laughed. After a few laughs, the corners of her mouth stretched all the way to her ears. In his panic, Gu Xing tried to shake off her hand, but her hand seemed to deform like clay and completely melted into his hand.

The girl's laughter grew increasingly shrill, her mouth gaping wide, revealing her fangs. Only then did Gu Xing realize he was outside the last carriage of the train. The train sped along, causing the girl's body to float out of the carriage, but her hand remained clung to Gu Xing's, her mouth still gaping as she smiled at him.

Gu Xing opened his eyes. In the dormitory, Da Kai was chasing Li Xu, while Zhang Da was engrossed in reading.

"It was a dream, a strange dream. Who was that girl?"

Gu Xing sat up, remembering that he and Yang Mian were supposed to visit Professor Chen today. He washed up for a while, and then Yang Mian arrived. Gu Xing led Yang Mian to the professor's dormitory. The dormitory was usually very quiet, and since it was a holiday today, even fewer students were there.

Gu Xing and Yang Mian were sitting in Professor Chen's house. Professor Chen was only in his thirties and usually went home during holidays. "Come find me if you need anything in the future. Goodbye." Professor Chen said before returning to his room.

Yang Mian dragged his heavy steps as he walked with Gu Xing in the corridor. Gu Xing could only comfort him as they walked. As they walked, a fragrance of hair wafted by, and Gu Xing heard footsteps approaching and then receding into the depths of the corridor.

The group played together until 10 o'clock. Yang Mian took Xiao Hui back to the girls' dormitory. After returning, they played together again. Only Gu Xing and Yang Mian smoked; the others refused to go down to buy cigarettes. Gu Xing and Yang Mian had to play rock-paper-scissors to decide who would buy them.

Gu Xing came out of the 24-hour convenience store, stuffed the cigarette in his hand into his pocket, and walked into the dark alley. Because it was late at night, the surroundings were very quiet and dark. After a while, a person walked at the end of the alley. A gust of wind blew by, carrying a familiar fragrance, just like the fragrance in his dream.

She and Gu Xing walked closer and closer, and Gu Xing nervously opened his eyes wide, trying to see what she looked like.

Suddenly, all the light around him vanished. The moon disappeared, and the streetlights went out. Gu Xing was left standing still. He couldn't see anything, but he could hear the girl's footsteps getting closer and closer, and the fragrance grew stronger. As she passed by, he felt how close she was to him.

Gu Xing chased after her, encountering a fork in the road. Relying on his intuition, he turned several corners and suddenly saw her standing by the roadside. Gu Xing stood behind her, wondering how to speak, when suddenly, she rushed towards the oncoming truck. Everything happened so suddenly that Gu Xing could only watch with his mouth agape.

The truck didn't stop; it sped past, and there wasn't a trace of blood or a body on the road.

Gu Xing stood by the roadside, staring blankly at the ground, before walking straight back to his apartment after a while.

"Gu Xing, did you fly to Japan to buy it?" Yang Mian said with dissatisfaction.

Gu Xing took out a cigarette, lit one for himself, and quietly thought about what had just happened. Yang Mian and Da Kai, however, were chatting and didn't notice Gu Xing.

Yang Yi noticed Gu Xing's unusual behavior, sat down beside him, and asked, "Brother Gu Xing, what's wrong?"

Gu Xing waved his hand: "I'm fine."

Yang Yi didn't press the matter further, and sat down next to Gu Xing, listening to Yang Mian and Li Xu tell some low-brow jokes.

And so, everyone except Yang Yi played until 5 a.m. At 9 a.m., Gu Xing was the first to wake up. He sat up from the sofa, rubbed his eyes, sat blankly for a while, and then walked to the kitchen. Suddenly, he seemed to step on something soft. Looking down, he saw a man lying on the floor with his limbs outstretched, shirtless, asleep.

Gu Xing carefully bypassed him, went to the kitchen to wash his face, returned to the sofa, lit a cigarette, and thought about what happened last night.

Yang Yi came out in her pajamas and saw that Gu Xing was already awake, so she went over to him and said, "Brother Gu Xing, you're awake."

"Hmm," Gu Xing nodded mechanically.
