Chapter 26
The surroundings were chaotic, with the sounds of sirens, ambulances, and footsteps rushing past. Shu Yi'an's eyes had been covered by Chu Mu, so her hearing was exceptionally sensitive, as was the clear pain emanating from her body.
The bullet struck Yang Ke below the neck, and blood gushed down his chest in large spurts. Seeing Yang Ke's condition, the two brothers beside him immediately released Su Ying, feigning surrender.
Zhan Cheng holstered his gun, squinted, and glanced at the wasteland. The shot hit the bullseye. Looking at the gleaming trigger in his hand, Zhan Cheng suddenly remembered what Chu Mu had said to him before getting out of the car.
"Don't kill him."
Zhan Cheng ejected the rest of the bullets from the magazine, leaving only one. He glanced at Chu Mu, somewhat puzzled, "Why?"
Chu Mu hesitated for a moment, then pushed open the car door and got out without hesitation. "You'll have a hard time explaining yourself."
A headshot is a sight not everyone gets to witness, and Chu Mu couldn't imagine how Shu Yi'an, who wouldn't even dare kill a fish, would feel seeing someone die right in front of him. Besides, Zhan Cheng's identity is quite special; he carries weapons outside of missions, so this special treatment is enough to keep him well-off for a while.
When Shu Yi'an woke up, she felt a cool sensation on her stomach. Although the curtains were drawn, the light in the room was still very strong. She subconsciously let out a soft moan and reached out to shield her eyes.
The doctor saw that she had regained consciousness and quickly stopped her from moving. "Hey! Don't worry, it's just coupling fluid. Let me do an ultrasound to see if there's any damage."
Shu Yi'an slowly took in the room's furnishings: a white bed, white curtains... everything was white. She didn't know how she got there; it wasn't until she lay there that she truly felt she had escaped the nightmare.
The doctor took a tissue and gently wiped away the fluid from Shu Yi'an's soft, flat abdomen, then pulled her clothes down a bit. "There's no internal injury. I've already given you an injection of calming medicine; you just need to rest for a while."
Shu Yi'an blinked and sat up with the help of the armrest. Her large eyes were somewhat bewildered. "How did I get here?"
The doctor pointed outside, "Your family came with you and are waiting for you outside."
Family… Shu Yi'an repeated the word in a daze, finding it somewhat unfamiliar. Her brain was working very slowly at that moment. When she closed her eyes, all she could hear was that muffled thud and the chaotic sirens. It wasn't until she came to her senses and went outside to see who it was that Miss Shu realized the doctor was referring to Chu Mu.
Unlike his usual impeccable appearance, the top two buttons of his shirt were loosely undone, and the cuffs were slightly wrinkled. He leaned against the wall, head down, seemingly lost in thought.
Seeing the door to the examination room across the hall open, he strolled over and took Shu Yi'an from the doctor. "How is she?" Shu Yi'an looked up in alarm at his voice, only to notice the weariness etched on his brow and face.
The doctor repeated what he had just told Shu Yi'an, "It's nothing serious, she's just not feeling well and needs to rest. She's already had a sedative injection, so she can stay here or at the hospital."
Chu Mu thought for a moment and then asked Shu Yi'an for her opinion, touching her thin, frail shoulders. "Where do you want to go? Home or here?"
Shu Yi'an is now deeply traumatized by the incident with Su Ying and is extremely weary of hospitals. She shook her head. "Let's go home."
Chu Mu nodded, holding her right hand. "Okay, let's go home."
Perhaps still recovering from such a terrible ordeal, Shu Yi'an was unusually obedient. She let Chu Mu lead her around until they got into the car, when Chu Mu held up a bright red object and brought it close to her face, startling Shu Yi'an so much that she recoiled violently.
"What are you doing?!"
Chu Mu glanced at her movements and casually pulled down the sun visor on the car roof, gesturing for her to look at him.
Because she had been bound by the rope and struggled fiercely, Miss Shu's once delicate face was now covered with broken skin, making her look rather alarming.
"Apply some medicine, so it doesn't leave a scar."
Shu Yi'an frowned as she looked at the bright red medicine on the cotton swab, and reluctantly put her hand down.
"hiss!"
"Don't move!" Chu Mu freed one hand to hold her flailing hands and carefully applied the medicine little by little.
They were too close. Chu Mu leaned in, almost as if he were holding Shu Yi'an in his arms. Shu Yi'an could see his furrowed brows and serious gaze just by lowering her eyes slightly. For some reason, her eyes suddenly stung, and tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
It was fear, it was gratitude, it was relief.
Chu Mu stopped what he was doing as he watched the tears rolling down Shu Yi'an's cheeks. Instead, he gently placed his warm fingertips over the corners of her eyes.
Because Shu Yi'an's face was covered with streaks of red medicine, and her nose was also red from crying, combined with her fair skin and sad expression, she looked particularly... comical.
Chu Mu suddenly chuckled softly. Seeing his expression, Shu Yi'an cried even harder…
"Alright, alright, stop crying." Chu Mu also realized he had gone a bit too far, suppressing a laugh as he reached out and pulled her into his arms, gently stroking the sobbing Miss Shu's fur. "Will you dare to run back behind my back again?"
This is the perfect opportunity to provide Ms. Shu with psychological safety education. Actually, Shu Yi'an feels like a primary school student who has made a mistake and caused a big disaster; she's filled with resentment and shame. She completely forgets the argument they had a few days ago in Germany.
Miss Shu rested her delicate chin on Chu Mu's shoulder, sniffed pitifully, and said, "I won't do it again."
"So you've learned your lesson?"
Miss Shu let out a wail and buried her face in Chu Mu's shoulder, nodding fiercely. She'd learned her lesson, really learned it. Damn it, she was going to die anyway, she'd never run around like that again.
Chu Mu smiled broadly, rubbed Shu Yi'an's head, and drove away.
On the way, Shu Yi'an, who had been looking down, suddenly raised her head, her face covered in grime, and asked, "Where's Su Ying? Is she alright?"
Chu Mu turned the car onto the auxiliary road, his tone slightly regretful. "She's broken her leg and isn't feeling well; she's in the hospital. You can go see her again in a while."
Shu Yi'an was a little sad, and after tugging at her clothes, she decided to tell Chu Mu what had happened. "This time... it's because..."
"I know." Chu Mu immediately stopped Shu Yi'an from continuing. He knew she wanted to tell him the reason for her kidnapping, and he didn't want her to say anything more, since it wasn't a pleasant memory.
As early as when he brought her to the hospital, Ji Hengdong had already figured out the reason and explained it to him outside the car. Chu Mu frowned as he looked at the unconscious Shu Yi'an in the car. He thought about it carefully and realized that the incident had already happened when he called her that night, but he hadn't been more patient in asking her why.
I know why.
Shu Yi'an bit her lower lip, swallowing back the words she had prepared, and asked a question she had wanted to ask ever since she saw him: "Then... why did you come back?"
Chu Mu tapped his fingers unconsciously on the steering wheel, unsure how to answer her, or perhaps the young master Chu was too proud to tell her. "Coincidentally, I'm back to report for duty."
