charme félin - Chapitre 9

Chapitre 9

"So, are you short of money?" I guessed it! Sigh...

"I don't need it, Dad. I'm earning my own money now. I'll send some home when I earn a little more, okay?" But despite saying that, he never sent a single penny home.

"No need, that's enough for you. We're not short of money. Besides, what can you do with that little bit? Just eat well outside. By the way, your mom and I have decided to go to Qinhuangdao. If you need to call, just call my cell phone; there might be no one home these days." My dad always nags when he calls. Everyone says women have menopause, but I think men do too, like my dad. He acts like he's worried I won't survive out there. Maybe that's the downside of Chinese parents! Qinhuangdao, wait a minute... Qinhuangdao, perfect.

"Dad, what did you say? You and Mom are going to Qinhuangdao? This isn't a good season, why are you going now?"

"Oh, I just finished up recently, and we don't go swimming, so the weather is just right now, neither too hot nor too cold. Hehe, it's been a long time since I've traveled with your mom."

"Oh, I see. Hehe, would Dad mind if I came along as a third wheel?" That way I could spend time with my parents and also get rid of some of my current problems—a win-win situation.

"Aren't you going to work? Besides, it's too far from here. Wait, your mom's talking to you." He could hear his mother scolding his father on the other end of the line.

"Mi'er, are you coming to Qinhuangdao with us?" Her mother asked excitedly.

"Yes, but Dad won't let me go. Oh well, Mom, I won't have a chance to be with you. I'll have to wait until Chinese New Year, and I don't even know how many days off we'll have, or if I'll even be able to go back. I'll just have to wait until some unknown day to be with you." I said, feigning grievance. It had been almost eight months since I returned to school for Chinese New Year, and I hadn't seen my mom for a long time. She must miss me terribly. Maybe saying this would get her some sympathy.

"What are you saying? Your dad's getting senile. Don't pay him any attention. Take a day off, and I'll give you the money if the company deducts it from your paycheck." It was indeed effective; no one knows a mother better than her daughter.

"Okay, Mom, when are you leaving?"

"I'll arrive tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon. Mi'er, when are you coming? We'll wait for you in Qinhuangdao."

"Okay, Mom. I'll go buy the tickets now. I'll take the train tonight and arrive around tomorrow afternoon. That's all, Mom. I'm off to the train station. Mwah! Mom, I love you so much!"

"You're such a big kid, and you still don't behave properly. Okay, be careful on your journey. We'll call you back later. Bye."

"Okay, bye-bye Mom, see you tomorrow." She hung up the phone cheerfully. Turning to look at Xiao Lin, she saw his brows furrowed.

"What's wrong?" I touched his brow. "Mi'er, why didn't you discuss this with me?"

"Didn't you tell me to go on a trip? Isn't this a great opportunity?" I couldn't quite figure out what he was thinking.

"But it can't be this fast, can it?" Xiao Lin didn't say anything more, started the car, and drove forward. He still took me to the train station and bought me a ticket for the train to Qinhuangdao at around 8 p.m. While we were buying the tickets, I felt like there was a pair of eyes watching me from behind. I turned around, and there were many people, but I didn't recognize anyone, and no one was watching me. I remembered that I had had this feeling before. I shook my head to shake it off, since I was leaving anyway.

After buying the tickets, we went home and packed some things. Before leaving, I gave Xiao Lin the house key and asked him to look after the house for me. "Have you packed everything?" Xiao Lin asked, rummaging through my bag.

"Yes, I brought everything I needed to, and nothing I shouldn't have." He took the last box of ice cream out of the refrigerator and sat back down on the sofa; there was still plenty of time.

"So what should I bring and what shouldn't I bring?" Xiao Lin was a little amused by my question.

"You should bring things for washing your face and brushing your teeth, but not clothes. Dad can buy them when we get there." Asking such a stupid question, especially for a policeman. He shook his head and continued helping me pack, giving me some peace and quiet.

"Mi'er, you didn't bring your glasses case, did you?" he said as he took a tissue and wiped the ice cream off my face.

"Oh, I really forgot. Can you go get it for me? It's on the table in my bedroom." She said, pulling his arm and shaking it while winking at him.

"Does your eye hurt? I'll go get it for you." I nodded, smiled, and continued eating my ice cream and watching TV.

"Mi'er, which one is it?" Xiao Lin asked me from inside.

"What do you mean, which one? There's only one box." How stupid! I stood up and had no choice but to get it myself.

"It's just one box, but there are two glasses cases." He asked me, pointing to two identical glasses cases on the table.

"Huh? What's going on? I already have one, where did this come from?" I asked Xiao Lin, who shook his head.

"How would I know if it's your own stuff? I don't know when you bought it."

"No way, I had one when I put on my glasses this morning." I looked at the two identical contact lens cases in my hand with a puzzled expression.

"Didn't you have any idea when you were packing? Was it one or two?" I shook my head again. I don't pay attention to these little details at all. How would I know?

"Did you notice?" I asked him, after all, he was a policeman. He pondered for a moment, then suddenly pulled me outside. Confused, I followed him out and almost tripped.

"What's wrong?" I asked, puzzled by Xiao Lin's reaction. He didn't answer me, but instead said into the house, "Mi'er, how about we just get rid of that glasses case and buy a new one?" I was about to object when he gave me a wink. Although I didn't understand what he meant, I knew I should go along with what he said.

"Okay then, don't want it, we'll just buy a new one." He gave me a thumbs up and patted my head.

"Perfect timing, Mi'er. I have a friend who sells glasses. How about I have him bring you a pair?" I nodded mechanically, still completely unsure of what he was up to. "Then wait here, I'll make the call." He took two quick steps, sat on the sofa, and expertly dialed the number.

Chapter Sixteen

After finishing the phone call, Xiao Lin sat on the sofa with me in his arms, but what he said made me so angry that I wanted to hit him. However, he held me tightly in his arms.

“Mi’er, your rich boss treats you very well. Actually, following him is much better than following me and this poor cop, right? But I’m quite open-minded. I even allow you to be all lovey-dovey with your boss. Anyone else would have been angry long ago. If you become rich in the future, don’t forget me. I really don’t want to be this lousy cop anymore. It’s so boring.” I glared at him, and he looked at me with such clear eyes.

I didn't say anything; I really didn't know what to say at that point. He kept talking, but I ignored him. About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. He let go of me and said, "I've brought you your glasses case." As soon as he released me, I kicked him. He yelped, looked back at me, and laughed. I was truly amazed that he could still laugh.

The moment he opened the door, I saw several policemen standing outside. The policeman standing at the door had a serious expression, but what he said shocked me. "Xiao Lin, you think you have so much influence, making me come all this way just to please your girlfriend. Here, this is the glasses case you wanted." He threw something over, saying it was a glasses case, but what Xiao Lin ended up with was a handgun.

Xiao Lin said thank you, and with a wave of his hand, several people silently entered. Xiao Lin pulled me behind him, protecting me tightly. Two of them had already entered my bedroom and stood on either side of the closet. Xiao Lin raised his hand, and the two simultaneously opened the closet door. Inside stood a heavily pregnant woman—Mei Zi. I was stunned. How could this be? This closet of mine had always been unused; I never imagined it would harbor someone. No, it was a ghost.

Mei stood expressionless in the closet, showing no intention of coming out. I slowly walked over. "Mei, don't hurt anyone anymore. I know you died unjustly. I will help you find the murderer. Trust me, okay?"

"Haha, yes, she's truly wronged, isn't she, Meiyu? But you must be resurrected today. Take her away." I turned to look at Xiao Lin, who nodded. I looked at Meizi again; she remained expressionless. Just as I was about to reach out to prove she wasn't dead, she slapped my hand away, causing me to bump into the closet. Ouch.

"Yes, I'm not dead. I didn't expect it to be so fast, Zimi. You can only blame yourself for being stupid, haha~ Where do ghosts come from in this world? Stupid woman, I don't understand why Wang Zhengming would abandon me and his four-month-old child for a stupid woman like you..." Meizi's voice disappeared outside the door.

Xiao Lin glanced at his watch: "Mi'er, hurry up, or we'll miss the train." As he spoke, he pulled me to pick up our things and headed out the door. When we got downstairs, we saw the police car that had taken Meizi away had just left, and some onlookers hadn't dispersed yet. It wasn't until we got into Xiao Lin's car that I came to my senses.

"Wait, what's going on? Can you tell me? Everything is so strange. Why isn't Meizi dead? Did she do all of this? Who else could that headless corpse be but Meizi? Oh my god, this is all a mess, everything is a mess. Xiao Lin, you must know, right?" I grabbed Xiao Lin's hand and asked, completely confused by this series of events.

"Hehe, you'll know when you get back from Qinhuangdao. Now, put down all your burdens and have a few days of fun, okay?" I knew that Xiao Lin wouldn't say anything if I asked any more questions, so I shut up and stopped asking.

I returned from Qinhuangdao a week later. Because I had something on my mind, I didn't have much fun, but my parents were genuinely happy to see me. To avoid spoiling their mood, I forced a smile. Finally back, as soon as I got off the train and saw Xiao Lin standing on the platform, I ran over and jumped into his arms. He hugged me tightly. "Mi'er has court today during the rainy season. The hearing starts in half an hour. Do you want to come with me?" he suddenly asked, pushing me away slightly and lifting my face.

"What? Today? Is it Meizi? Is it really her?" Xiao Lin nodded. "Why? Why did she kill people? Did she kill all those people?" Xiao Lin continued to nod. What was going on? How could this be? Xiao Lin seemed to see my questions. He pulled me to the car and gave me two photos. One was of a beautiful girl. My first impression was, "Mi'er, do you know her?" He pointed to the photo on the left and asked me.

I shook my head; I really didn't recognize it. Although there was a vague familiarity between the eyebrows and eyes, like someone, I couldn't quite place it. "What about this one?" He pointed to another one, but I shook my head again. "Isn't this the same person?" I asked Xiao Lin, because it was indeed the same person. "No, this is Mei Yu, and this is Wang Ling, the girl from your company who jumped off the building. They are twins."

"Huh? Twins? How could this be Meiyu? You must be mistaken. She doesn't look like this at all." I couldn't see it at all. Then I remembered who her eyes and eyebrows resembled—they really did look like Meiyu. But although both were beautiful, this Meiyu looked much more vibrant. I shook my head.

"The current Mei Yu has undergone plastic surgery. She did this to avenge her sister, the deceased Wang Ling. Before the surgery, everyone who saw her kill people thought she was the dead Wang Ling. That's why your company spread rumors that Wang Ling died with her eyes open, but in reality, it was always just her."

"Huh? Then who died this time?" Since she didn't die, her body should at least have a place to go, right?

"She's just a poor girl. It's also our fault as police officers for being negligent. We identified her as Mei Yu based on her identification, which was a huge mistake on our part, allowing her to take advantage of the situation."

"But why did she want to kill me? And were all those things I experienced just a dream? Has Xiao Cui gone mad? And what about that Zhouyi-related chairman I met? Was that also a dream?" I asked all the questions in my mind in a row.

"Hehe, you've asked so many questions, which one should I answer first?" Xiao Lin asked me with a smile.

"Do whatever you want, just let me understand." I waved my hand, my mind was a complete mess right now.

"After her plastic surgery, she joined your company, but unexpectedly, your boss captured her heart and she fell in love. She gradually forgot about revenge. However, after you appeared, and Wang Zhengming spoke highly of you to her more than once, her desire for revenge was rekindled. So she staged her own murder. Because she had plastic surgery, she could no longer use Wang Ling's name, so she could only make herself die and become a ghost so that no one would suspect her. This time, her only target was you. She even said that after killing you, she would take her child to another place. Unexpectedly, she failed and ended up in the net of justice."

"Then how do you explain the things that happened to me?" I still didn't understand.

"Do you remember the contact lenses on your desk a week ago?"

"So, one of the two identical ones is the problem, right?"

"Yes, you're really smart. One of the pairs was specially treated to make people see things in their imagination, but those things don't actually exist. It's just that those things exist in your subconscious, which is why you see them, understand? Actually, they don't exist at all. This was her last attempt. She planned to have you wear her glasses when you woke up tomorrow morning and kill you while you were hallucinating. But she didn't expect you to leave. So when we were in the living room, she wanted to come out and change them, but I went back in, so she didn't have time to take them. That's why there were two identical glasses cases on the table. After you asked me, I remembered that there was only one when I went in before, so I decided to play along. As for that 'chairman' you mentioned, he's either a charlatan or a real deity, haha. Mei Yu didn't explain that, so I don't know." While I was still processing his words, I heard Xiao Lin say "Damn it!" and quickly start the car, driving towards the courthouse.

There seemed to be something I didn't quite understand. Looking at the two photos in my hand, I suddenly remembered, "How did you know she had plastic surgery?"

"You really have a million questions, because no matter how much a person changes their appearance, there is one thing they can't change, and that is their ears. At first, Mei Yu didn't admit her crimes, only saying that she only wanted to kill you. It wasn't until our colleagues put these two photos in front of her that she told the truth." As she spoke, the car had already stopped at the courthouse entrance.

When we rushed to the courthouse and pushed open the door, we arrived just in time for the sentencing: "Mei Yu, a Chinese woman, was arrested on September 23, 2004, for intentional homicide. She has now confessed to the crime, and the evidence is conclusive. This court hereby sentences Mei Yu, a Chinese woman, to death with a one-year reprieve." The entire courtroom rose to its feet. Two court officers led Mei out of the courtroom. We followed, watching Mei get into the prison van and gradually disappear into the traffic. Xiao Lin hugged me tightly.

4 months later

"Has she given birth yet?" Ouyang ran over, covered in sweat, and grabbed my arm.

"No, it should be soon. Don't rush, wait a minute. Giving birth, do you think it's like laying an egg?" I couldn't help but glance at the operating room twice.

"Mr. Wang, could you please stop waving around in front of me? It's making me dizzy." Ouyang pressed Wang Zhengming down into a chair.

"I was just anxious! This is my first time being a dad, I'm so nervous, I've never been a dad before." He laughed sheepishly, making us all laugh. Then, a baby cried, and a nurse ran out. "It's born! Family members, please sign the consent form." Wang Zhengming stood up, excitedly hugging Xiao Lin and shaking him vigorously. "It's born! It's born! I'm a dad! Haha, I have a child!"

"Hello, which one is the patient's family member? Go sign the papers." The nurse was getting a little impatient.

"Mr. Wang, please go and sign the papers first. You'll see the child soon." I patted Wang Zhengming, who was a little too excited.

"Oh, oh. I'll go right now, I'll go right now." He said, a little dizzy, and followed the nurse.

"I forgot to ask if it was a boy or a girl, how stupid of me." Just as Xiao Lin was complaining, a nurse came out carrying a baby, followed by another nurse pushing Meizi in a wheelchair. Xiao Lin immediately ran over and stopped the nurses, "Let me see the baby."

"Are you the child's father?" The nurse stepped aside.

"Yes, yes. I'm the child's godfather, is that alright?" The nurse chuckled, making us all laugh too. Xiao Lin lifted the blanket covering the baby and looked inside. "A son, it's a son. Haha, that old man Wang Zhengming has an heir!" Our laughter filled the hospital corridor.
