Chapter 16

While Ji Yuning was pondering these thoughts, Fang Bai had already entered the room.

Ji Yuning's eyes flickered slightly, thinking to herself that politeness was indeed just an act.

"Aunt Wu said that you took care of me when I had a fever last weekend."

Watching Fang Bai's retreating figure, Ji Yuning asked again, unwilling to give up, as if she could get a different answer from him and ease her inner turmoil.

Before she left home that morning, the room wasn't tidied up yet, so Fang Bai didn't know what it would look like once everything was arranged. Now, looking around, the furniture placement was flawless, and Fang Bai nodded in satisfaction.

Upon hearing Ji Yuning's words, Fang Bai nodded again: "Yes."

Ji Yuning lowered her eyes.

The answer was different from what she expected.

The atmosphere in the room suddenly became quiet.

Fang Bai only had a vague understanding of Ji Yuning's thoughts, but she could still guess a little bit about them.

Since Ji Yuning didn't speak, it was up to her to speak.

"Speaking of which, your high fever was because of me, so it's only right that I take care of you."

As Fang Bai spoke, he suddenly realized that he couldn't take all the blame on her, otherwise he would only push Ji Yuning away.

Fang Bai coughed and said lazily, "Of course, the main reason is that you didn't listen to me. I told you not to take a shower, but you insisted on doing so, which caused water to get into the wound, leading to inflammation and eventually a high fever."

Fang Bai placed her hands on her hips. After speaking, she turned her head to look at Ji Yuning, only to see that the girl had turned her head away, and an awkward expression appeared on her profile.

Within seconds, the girl seemed to have figured something out, or perhaps she had made a compromise. She turned her head and looked at Fang Bai.

The hostility in Ji Yuning's eyes lessened, and her bright black pupils finally showed the vitality that a person her age should have.

Fang Bai had already guessed what Ji Yuning was going to do. She waited for almost a minute, and seeing that Ji Yuning still didn't intend to speak, she smiled and said to Ji Yuning, "You're welcome."

Ji Yuning: "..."

The words "thank you" that were stuck in my throat were swallowed down.

Fang: Princess room! Satisfied?!

Adulthood: I'd rather it be a wedding room, all whining and humming... (?)

Chapter 14

Fang Bai saw Ji Yuning's speechless expression and sighed for the second time today: she really is still a little wolf cub.

Fang Bai walked up to Ji Yuning, raised his hand from behind his back, and gently placed it on the top of Ji Yuning's head. He originally intended to pat her like he did in the car, but the unexpectedly soft feel made Fang Bai's hand unconsciously rub and squeeze it a couple of times.

Realizing he had ruffled the female lead's hair, Fang Bai slowly withdrew his hand, coughed softly, and said, "I'm going to rest. You can play by yourself."

His tone was gentle, like that of an elder.

Ji Yuning's eyes were filled with a sapphire blue. She turned her head away and pursed her lips, letting out a muffled "Mmm."

Fang Bai's lips curled slightly into a faint smile. He said nothing more and walked past Ji Yuning.

As they brushed past each other, that familiar sweet scent once again wafted into Ji Yuning's nose.

The flavor was stronger than it was in the mall.

Fang Bai returned to his room and had just lay down on the bed when his phone, which was on the bedside table, rang.

Fang Bai picked it up and saw that it was a WeChat message from Liao Li.

Liao Li: [I'm not going on an overseas assignment this week.]

“.

Fang Bai paused for a moment before remembering that she had made an agreement with Liao Li that Liao Li would come to her house to see Ji Yuning every weekend.

Fang Bai: [Oh, okay.]

The other end quickly replied.

Liao Li: [Is it convenient to video chat tonight? I'd like to talk to Xiao Ning.]

Fang Bai: [What time?]

Liao Li: [Around nine o'clock.]

Fang Bai: [Okay.]

That concludes my conversation with Liao Li.

Fang Bai lay back down on the bed, staring at the ceiling and blinking.

Fang Bai could have given Ji Yuning's contact information to Liao Li, but Fang Bai didn't want to.

Fang Bai was afraid that Liao Li would ask Ji Yuning the same questions she had asked him last time. She was certain that Ji Yuning would agree to live with Liao Li then.

Having become wary, Fang Bai handed the phone to Ji Yuning after Liao Li called that evening. Instead of leaving, she sat opposite Ji Yuning and quietly eavesdropped on their conversation.

Looking at Ji Yuning's face on the screen, Liao Li's first question was, "Xiao Ning, are you feeling better?"

Ji Yuning still remembered Liao Li.

In my memory, Liao Li was very gentle with me, just like... Fang Bai was with me.

But what happened in the end?

They're nothing but wolves in sheep's clothing.

Therefore, Ji Yuning did not show much enthusiasm towards Liao Li, remaining indifferent as before, "Alright."

Ji Yuning didn't ask Liao Li how she knew she was sick; she figured it was probably Fang Bai who told her.

In his memory, Fang Bai, Liao Li, and his mother were very good friends. Although Liao Li went abroad, Fang Bai and she should have kept in touch.

After hearing this, Liao Li laughed and said, "It's good that you're better. I was almost scared to death when I saw you had such a high fever."

Ji Yuning turned her head, her eyes filled with confusion: "Did Aunt Liao treat my illness?"

"Oh right, have you forgotten that I'm a doctor?" Liao Li thought Ji Yuning was questioning her abilities.

Ji Yuning whispered, "No."

Liao Li chuckled softly, then asked, "Where's Fang Bai?"

Ji Yuning thought Liao Li wanted to chat with Fang Bai, so she said "wait a moment" and was about to get up, but Liao Li stopped her.

Liao Li said, "You don't need to give her the phone. I just want to see if she's near you, mainly because I want to talk to you."

After hearing this, Ji Yuning glanced at the person opposite her out of the corner of her eye.

Although Fang Bai was sitting casually on the sofa, Ji Yuning could vaguely see his ears standing up under his hair.

Ji Yuning: "?"

Liao Li had no idea what was happening here. Looking at the person on the screen who had grown up completely compared to when she was a child, Liao Li vaguely thought she saw Lu Xia's shadow in Ji Yuning's indifferent eyebrows and eyes.

This reminded Liao Li of what she had seen that day, and a feeling of heartache welled up in her heart. Liao Li unconsciously asked, "Xiao Ning, is Fang Bai good to you?"

Liao Li's voice entered the ears of the two people in the room at a moderate volume. Before Ji Yuning could figure out why Liao Li was asking her this, another face suddenly appeared on the small screen in the upper right corner.

A small face with fair skin.

Fang Bai was anxious, fearing that Liao Li would say she wanted to take care of Ji Yuning next, so he walked to Ji Yuning's side, bent down, looked directly at the camera, and communicated with Liao Li with his eyes.

Fang Bai's attention was entirely on the camera, and she didn't notice that her face was less than ten centimeters away from Ji Yuning's face.

With just the slightest movement, their faces would press together.

The sweet, refreshing aroma that wafted towards her kept Ji Yuning from moving away from Fang Bai's approach.

Fang touched her lips and asked softly, "Liao Li, what question are you asking? How have I treated Xiao Ning badly?"

He clearly promised to treat Ji Yuning well, so why doesn't he believe her?

Liao Li casually remarked, "Then why are you in such a hurry?"

“…”

Do you think I don't know why I'm in such a hurry?

Fang Bai knew Liao Li wouldn't believe her, so she hesitated for a moment. Then, she didn't know where she got the courage, but she said to Liao Li, "Let Xiao Ning tell you herself."

Fang Bai regretted it as soon as he said it.

Should we let Ji Yuning say it herself?

It's as if she deliberately jumped onto the chopping board.

“…”

In a place out of the camera's view, Fang Bai put his hand on Ji Yuning's shoulder and poked her with his index finger.

Everything was understood without being said. Fang Bai thought that with Ji Yuning's intelligence, she should know what she meant.

I just don't know if Ji Yuning will cooperate...

Fang Bai licked his lips with the tip of his tongue, turned his head to Ji Yuning and said, "Tell Liao Li, am I good to you?"

Ji Yuning glanced at the hand on her shoulder, and the owner of the hand poked her with her finger because of her silence.

Ji Yuning faced the phone camera again, showing no signs of being "threatened," and calmly said, "Aunt Fang is very good to me."

Liao Li was skeptical: "Really?"

The hand on the shoulder was withdrawn.

Ji Yuning lowered her eyes and said, "Mm."

"That's good," Liao Li said. "My work here should be finished in two weeks. When I go back, I'll bring you some local specialties, okay?"

"No need." Fang Bai straightened up and took the phone from Ji Yuning's hand. "I can buy whatever she wants."

When Liao Li saw Fang Bai, she said angrily, "Give the phone back to Xiao Ning. I haven't finished speaking yet."
