[Childhood Memories: Prologue]
"Husband, I want to eat grapes," Su Rongrong said lazily, nestled comfortably in Yu Qingqian's arms. Yu Qingqian looked at his shy wife with doting eyes, peeling a grape and popping the glistening one into Su Rongrong's cherry-like mouth. Su Rongrong obediently hugged Yu Qingqian, happily stroking her lower abdomen with her right hand.
Yu Qingqian's slender fingers caressed Su Rongrong's hand, his eyes filled with deep affection. Don't let Su Rongrong's current obedient and docile appearance fool you; she's the most formidable tigress in the entire Xiangcheng. Yu Qingqian is known for both doting on and fearing his wife. But he has more than one tigress in his family; even his mother, Old Madam Ning, is not to be trifled with. Perhaps this is the greatest weakness of the greatest prime minister of Gengyue Kingdom. And when these two earth-shattering women argue, it puts Yu Qingqian in a very difficult position, leaving him caught in the middle.
Seeing the two people nestled together by the artificial hill, Old Madam Ning's anger flared. Remembering her shrewish daughter-in-law, her rage intensified. Her daughter-in-law had insisted that a pregnant woman needed her husband's company for the child's health. But she herself had been without a husband back then, and had given birth to a prime minister, second only to the emperor. She just wanted to steal her son from the middle. The old lady was furious, and seeing her son's doting treatment of Su Rongrong—a treatment she herself had never enjoyed—she thought, "He's really forgotten his mother after marrying a wife." Unable to contain her anger, she stepped forward.
Seeing her young mistress's angry expression, Madam Li knew that the young master would once again be caught in the middle. She couldn't help but feel sorry for the young master she had raised. She sighed softly.
"What a shameful sight! A woman clinging to her husband all day long!" Old Madam Ning said angrily, pointing at Su Rongrong, who was enjoying herself in her arms. Su Rongrong raised an eyebrow, amused by her mother-in-law's apparent son-loving tendencies. She thought to herself, "I also have a husband-loving tendency." "I didn't know my mother-in-law was here, and I wasn't feeling well, so I didn't greet her," Yu Qingqian said, feeling restless. She wanted to greet her mother, but Su Rongrong gave her a stern look, even pinching Yu Qingqian's thigh with her delicate hand. Old Madam Ning glared at Yu Qingqian, thinking, "She's really forgotten her mother now that she has a wife!" Her resentful gaze drifted towards Yu Qingqian, who was now caught in the middle. He could only quietly wait for the two women to start their battle. He just hoped he, the innocent bystander, wouldn't be caught in the crossfire.
Li's mother quickly cast a sympathetic glance at her young master, and Yu Qingqian, noticing this, returned the glance with a look of shared misery. This was because Li's mother's son and husband also shared the same Oedipus complex and wife-worshiping complex.
"Hmph, who knows what kind of thing it is. Maybe it's a money-losing burden." Old Madam Ning said angrily, unable to contain her anger. Su Rongrong was furious upon hearing this. She jumped up, glaring at Old Madam Ning. How dare she say her child was worthless, a money-losing burden? So what if it's a girl? But she was still indignant: "Mother-in-law, how could the one in my belly be a money-losing burden!" She maintained her charming smile and stared straight at Old Madam Ning.
"Alright! Since my daughter-in-law is so confident, how about we make a bet?" Old Madam Ning revealed a sly smile. Su Rongrong thought with some worry and began to hesitate. Seeing Su Rongrong's hesitant appearance, Old Madam Ning continued to provoke her: "Is your daughter-in-law afraid she won't be able to give birth? If she's afraid, then let's just forget about it." Old Madam Ning spoke casually, but her eyes were fixed on Su Rongrong's expression.
Su Rongrong isn't afraid of anything except provocation; even knowing it's a conspiracy, she'll foolishly jump in. This time, Old Madam Ning had precisely identified Su Rongrong's personality.
"Okay, go ahead and say it." Su Rongrong finally said this after a while.
"This is something you promised yourself, my dear wife. If you don't give birth to a grandson this time, I have a girl I'd like to marry into my family!" Old Madam Ning's smile grew increasingly sinister. Su Rongrong shuddered; she had impulsively jumped into a fire pit again, this time with her dear husband as the stake.
Yu Qingqian was also taken aback. She hadn't expected that after rejecting her mother's suggestion that morning, she would still try to persuade Rongrong. A wave of anxiety washed over her. She looked anxiously at Su Rongrong, urging her not to agree. However, Old Madam Ning stared at Su Rongrong with an expression that seemed to say, "You wouldn't dare." Su Rongrong, who had always been a woman of her word, couldn't stand such contempt. She blurted out, "It's a deal."
Old Madam Ning smiled with satisfaction, then looked at her son, as if to say, 'You have no right to stop it.' Yu Qingqian could only watch as his wife and mother made this deal without any say in the matter.
However, what happened next made Su Rongrong regret it for the rest of her life.
[Childhood Memories: Genius]
Rongrong was undoubtedly a beauty, with a touch of heroism in her brows, yet her skin was like jade, and her bright eyes held a confidence and decisiveness rarely seen in women—truly a remarkable woman. But now, Su Rongrong was in excruciating pain, constantly muttering to herself, beads of sweat seeping from her smooth forehead, soaking her silk clothes. The joyous sounds outside the door made Su Rongrong tremble. Her cunning mother-in-law had said that if she gave birth to a girl, her husband would have to take a concubine.
The drums and music were deafening, but Yu Qingqian was extremely anxious. Looking at her mother, whose wicked scheme had succeeded, and listening to her wife Su Rongrong screaming in the delivery room, she felt a deep unease.
"Yu Qingqian, you bastard! Why don't you have children yourself?" Su Rongrong thought about how if she gave birth to a girl, her husband would have to share half of his child with someone else, not to mention the pain of childbirth. Su Rongrong vented her inner pain. Yu Qingqian was also in great pain, thinking, 'If I could have children, I wouldn't have them either.' But this high-ranking prime minister only dared to think it, not say it aloud, because he was henpecked.
Listening to Su Rongrong's painful wails, Yu Qingqian felt extremely sad. His heart could only hold Su Rongrong. In everyone's eyes, Su Rongrong was an impulsive and brainless woman, but Yu Qingqian loved this rude and untalented woman. She was unpretentious, dared to love and hate, and was much purer than the daughters of officials. But his mother just didn't like Su Rongrong.
Su Rongrong gripped her wet nurse's hand tightly, her hands trembling. Looking at the newborn, she was puzzled. The child neither cried nor fussed, nor did it seem to have experienced the pain of birth. Its delicate, sculpted face held a serene contentment, and its eyes, as bright as the stars in the vast ocean, stared directly at Su Rongrong. Su Rongrong felt as if she were being drawn in. Those deep eyes—this child possessed such magic.
Unfortunately, the child was a girl. Listening to the deafening music outside, Su Rongrong stared blankly, utterly lost in thought. It was all her fault for being so reckless; now her husband was about to be sold. As she thought this, tears began to fall from Su Rongrong's eyes, each drop like a sparkling pearl.
The child in the wet nurse's arms seemed to understand Su Rongrong's pain, raising his little hand as if to wipe away the tears from her eyes. His bright smile seemed to shock both Su Rongrong and the wet nurse; the child's aura made their hearts tremble. Su Rongrong, who hadn't clearly seen the child's face before, hugged him tightly, looking at him with surprise. His small, innocent face shone with trust. "His appearance is like a flower, his voice like a bird, his spirit like the moon, his posture like a willow, his bones like jade, his skin like ice and snow, his figure like autumn water, his heart like poetry, and his fragrance like ink!" These words actually brought to mind the words of Su Rongrong, a woman with no literary talent. While shocked that she had given birth to such a beautiful child, Su Rongrong suddenly asked the beautiful child, "Child, would you like to be a man?"
This idea terrified the wet nurse. Was she going to make the young lady dress up as a man? Good heavens, the young lady was too bold! Just as she was about to stop her, the child nodded w
