Ghost Stories - Chapter 5

Chapter 5

After examining the heads, Lin Feng still couldn't figure it out. Li Mingsheng then led the two to the outside of the morgue, first saying to Xiao Jie Jie, "If you're not comfortable here, you can wait!"

Lin Feng deliberately scared Xiao Jie Jie by saying, "You're all alone here. If some ghost comes to touch you again, we won't have time to save you!"

Xiao Jie looked around and saw that the corridors on both sides were empty and deserted. She was indeed very scared. She thought that although going in would mean facing Lao Si's corpse, it was still the corpse of someone she knew, and besides, Lin Feng and Li Mingsheng were there. So she glared at Lin Feng and said, "No need, I'll go in with you."

Lin Feng grinned mischievously. Xiao Jiejie, walking behind him, gave Lin Feng a hard shove and said, "Hurry up and go inside!"

The white sheet covering the body was lifted, revealing the fourth brother's corpse. His slightly parted lips were bloodless, his face was pale, and the corners of his mouth were slightly upturned, as if he were smiling, which looked extremely eerie. A long incision ran from his chest to his lower abdomen, clearly indicating that he had been dissected.

Lin Feng reached out and pressed on the muscles of Lao Si's arm, saying, "When did you die?"

Li Mingsheng said, "We just brought his family's head back to the station last night, and then news of his death came from the interrogation room. Isn't that strange? Moreover, there were no abnormalities on his body; the forensic doctor performed an autopsy, and all his organs were intact. It's really a bit..."

Lin Feng nodded and said, "Yes, but there have been too many strange things these past few days, and we can't guess them using common sense."

Seeing Lin Feng pull out a piece of yellow paper, Li Mingsheng hurriedly asked, "What are you doing?"

Lin Feng said, "This guy died strangely. I'll burn a talisman to ward off evil spirits first, so that no unclean things follow him home and scare him half to death!" He glanced at Xiao Jie Jie as he spoke.

Xiao Jie pretended not to hear, puffing up her cheeks.

Just as Lin Feng took out his lighter to light it, the fourth brother, who had already died and been dissected, suddenly sat up straight and grabbed Lin Feng's hand.

Lin Feng was so shocked that he almost lost two of his three souls and six of his seven spirits. A scream came from behind him, followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground; Xiao Jie Jie had already fainted.

Only Li Mingsheng remained calm under pressure, his years of experience as a criminal investigator shining through. Despite the fear, his first reaction was a side kick, striking the sitting corpse hard in the head. He fully expected the kick to knock the corpse off its feet, but to his surprise, with a "crack," the corpse's neck broke, and its head slumped limply to one side.

Li Mingsheng gasped, while Lin Feng was already stunned.

The corpse emitted a sinister laugh. Lin Feng snapped out of his daze and placed the talisman in his hand on the corpse's forehead. The corpse grabbed Lin Feng's hand holding the talisman with its other hand and said in a completely flat voice, "You will all die!"

Li Mingsheng punched the corpse, but the corpse suddenly fell backward after saying those words and stopped breathing. Li Mingsheng had used too much force and couldn't stop in time, so he landed on top of the corpse.

Just then, the door opened, and a forensic doctor came in. Seeing Li Mingsheng lying face down on the corpse, he immediately said, "What are you doing? Officer Li, trying to commit necrophilia?"

The forensic doctor was clearly unaware of what had just happened and was joking with Li Mingsheng.

Seeing Xiao Jie lying on the ground, the forensic doctor said strangely, "What's wrong? This girl is really something, she even faints when she sees a corpse!" He then went over and pressed hard on Xiao Jie's philtrum. Xiao Jie opened her eyes and let out a piercing scream. The forensic doctor was so startled he almost fell to the ground.

The scream snapped Lin Feng and Li Mingsheng back to their senses. Lin Feng quickly hugged Xiao Jie Jie, who then calmed down and stammered, "The corpse... the corpse scared me to death!"

Lin Feng comforted him, "It's alright, it's alright now, see, everything's fine, isn't it?" He said this, but he was also very scared, afraid that the corpse might suddenly stand up. As he spoke, he looked at the corpse, and thankfully, the corpse remained still.

Little Jie exclaimed in surprise, "I don't want to see! Let's go quickly, okay? I'm so scared!"

The forensic doctor asked in surprise, "What's wrong? Did they just revive the body?"

Li Mingsheng, also covered in sweat, said, "I don't know if it was a sudden resurrection, but the corpse suddenly stood up and said something!"

The forensic doctor had only been joking, but when he actually found a body, he was speechless with astonishment. No one would believe such a thing unless they witnessed it firsthand, let alone a legal professional who always adheres to scientific principles. The forensic doctor said doubtfully, his tone filled with disbelief.

Li Mingsheng wiped the sweat from his brow. He had been quite frightened just now. Although he had experienced countless trials and tribulations, something so unexpected was still hard to bear. Everyone had heard of "revealed corpses," but probably no one had ever seen one, let alone a corpse with its abdomen cut open. The shock was no less than seeing a dinosaur come to life.

Lin Feng was still comforting Xiao Jie Jie when the forensic doctor walked over to the body and examined Lao Si's corpse. It was exactly the same as countless other corpses he had seen, nothing unusual. However, Li Mingsheng was known throughout the police force for his meticulous investigations and wouldn't joke around with him. The forensic doctor, while examining the body, said, "That's impossible."

Seeing that Xiao Jiejie had gradually calmed down, Lin Feng released her and went to the body. He took out the talisman he had been about to attach but hadn't. The forensic doctor said disdainfully, "What are you doing? You can't do these superstitious things!"

Just as the forensic doctor was about to stop Lin Feng, Li Mingsheng said, "Don't stop him, let him stick it on." He was still shaken by what he had just witnessed.

Lin Feng was furious. Without even glancing at the forensic doctor, he said, "What you don't understand isn't necessarily superstition!" With that, he slapped the talisman onto the center of the corpse's forehead.

The forensic doctor shook his head, disapproving of Lin Feng's actions and puzzled by Li Mingsheng's behavior. But what happened next left him speechless.

After the talisman was placed on the corpse's head, Li Mingsheng, who had been observing the corpse closely, noticed something amiss. He discovered that the muscles on the corpse's face were twitching slightly.

Li Mingsheng touched the forensic doctor and said, "Look!"

At this point, the corpse's facial muscles were twitching violently, as if it were in excruciating pain. The forensic doctor stared in disbelief at what was happening before his eyes.

The corpse's limbs and entire body began to tremble, and wisps of blue smoke rose from the areas where the talismans had been applied. The forensic doctor stammered, "This...this is unbelievable!"

Xiao Jie clung tightly to Lin Feng's chest, too afraid to look. Lin Feng's hands were sweating with tension, and Li Mingsheng also stared at the corpse with a tense expression, his whole body poised to spring into action in case the corpse suddenly leaped up and hurt someone.

Fortunately, although the body was shaking violently, it did not stand up like before.

The body's movements gradually subsided, eventually ceasing altogether. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. The forensic doctor was utterly astonished, completely overturning the scientific theories he had held as supreme truth for over a decade, all in just under two minutes. He stammered for a long time before finally managing to say, "What...what happened?"

Li Mingsheng spread his hands and said, "I hope you can tell me!"

"Ring ring!" Li Mingsheng's cell phone rang in his pocket.

After answering the phone, Li Mingsheng exclaimed after hearing only one sentence, "What? This?" Then he hummed a few times and said, "I'm in the morgue right now, I'm coming right away!"

After hanging up the phone, Li Mingsheng told Lin Feng, "The head we took back from the suspect's house decomposed rapidly in front of the two officers just two minutes ago, and now it's turned into three skulls!"

The forensic doctor was the first to exclaim "Ah!" Lin Feng had experienced too many supernatural events, and as long as it wasn't something as sudden as what had just happened, he remained quite calm.

Li Mingsheng said to Lin Feng, "How about it? Let's go take a look!"

Lin Feng readily agreed, "Okay!"

Little Jie exclaimed in surprise, "No, I'm scared!"

Li Mingsheng said, "It's okay, you don't need to go in later. Just wait for us in the office. There are plenty of people there, nothing will happen!"

Xiao Jie was terrified by the "zombie" incident and really didn't want to look at that horrifying skull again. She only felt relieved after hearing Li Mingsheng's explanation.

Leaving Xiao Jiejie in the office, Li Mingsheng and Lin Feng went into the room where the secrets were stored.

Upon seeing Li Mingsheng approach, the two officers exclaimed, "Boss, this is unbelievable! You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it with your own eyes. If it weren't for the skull here, we wouldn't know how to explain ourselves!"

Li Mingsheng sighed and said, "I just saw something even more unbelievable than what you all did. The suspect's body suddenly stood up. It nearly scared me to death!"

Upon hearing this, both officers looked frightened and said, "Boss, look at these heads decomposing so rapidly, and the suspect's body suddenly 'rose from the dead'! Is there some kind of evil spirit haunting our police force?"

Upon opening the container holding the human heads, a foul stench immediately emanated from it, making it almost impossible for the group to breathe.

Li Mingsheng asked Lin Feng, "What do you think is going on?"

Lin Feng watched for a while and said, "I think it's a good thing!"

"Good news?" Li Mingsheng almost thought he had misheard. First, there was the "sudden death of a corpse," and then several heads that hadn't decomposed for over a month turned into skeletons in just two minutes. Li Mingsheng almost thought Lin Feng had been driven mad by these successive events.

But Lin Feng said seriously, "It's a good thing, because I can't feel their resentment anymore. It seems that since the culprit is dead, they naturally left."

Li Mingsheng nodded and said, "Yes, that makes sense." Then he said to Lin Feng, "You've helped me a lot. How about I treat you to dinner tonight?"

Lin Feng laughed and said, "I couldn't be happier!"

The two police officers standing nearby said with bitter faces, "You two are really in a good mood. We're about to throw up from the smell, and you're still talking about going out to eat."

Throughout the meal, Xiao Jiejie only ate two bites before giving up. Lin Feng and Li Mingsheng, on the other hand, had excellent appetites and wolfed down their food. Xiao Jiejie shook her head, wondering what had turned these two into; seeing such disgusting food didn't affect their appetite at all.

After they had eaten and drunk their fill, Lin Feng sipped his tea and said to Li Mingsheng, "I have to go to the school tonight; there's a dangerous person there."

Li Mingsheng was taken aback and said, "Isn't this over yet? How come there are still dangerous people?"

Lin Feng shook his head and said, "It's far from over. The second dangerous person is Luo Yang, who shares a dormitory with Lao Si. In my opinion, he's a ticking time bomb, and the force of his explosion will be quite astonishing!"

Li Mingsheng couldn't connect these things together, but fortunately, it was something outside his area of knowledge, so it wasn't too much of a headache. However, while these things were terrifying, they also piqued his interest, so he said to Lin Feng, "How about I go with you?"

Lin Feng carefully examined Li Mingsheng and said, "These things can't be solved with bullets and fists. I can't guarantee your safety if you come with me. Because I think Luo Yang is no longer a living person within our comprehension!"

Xiao Jiejie and Li Mingsheng said in unison, "What did you say?"

Lin Feng thought for a moment and said, "To be precise, he's already dead. The first time I saw him, he had a 'dead' look on his face, pale and lifeless. The other day I saw him again at the hamburger shop, and I noticed that his heels were never touching the ground. Can you imagine what was behind him?" Lin Feng looked mysterious.

Xiao Jie was clearly terrified, but also extremely curious, and asked, "What is it?"

Lin Feng leisurely took a sip of tea before saying, "It was a ghost. It placed its own feet under his feet, and used both hands to press on his pulse points, controlling him by manipulating his meridians. I'm certain of that."

If Lin Feng had said this under normal circumstances, the two people present probably wouldn't have believed him. However, after today's series of events that defied scientific explanation, they were already quite convinced. Li Mingsheng chuckled twice and said, "Whether it's a human or a ghost, I'm going to go and see it. People in our line of work have a lot of killing intent; there shouldn't be any problems, right?"

After taking Xiao Jie Jie home, it was already past 11 p.m. The sky was dark and oppressive, as if foreshadowing something bad was about to happen. Xiao Jie Jie kept telling Lin Feng to come back early. Although there was a talisman on her door, Xiao Jie Jie was still very scared.

Lin Feng made a promise to Marx, almost to the point of giving a guarantee, before Xiao Jie Jie tearfully let him leave.

Li Mingsheng parked his car at the school gate, peeked into the school, and said, "Damn it, why is such a good school so lifeless!"

Lin Feng Nuoye said, "What? Aren't you scared?"

Li Mingsheng chuckled and said, "I'm a police officer, after all. If you're not afraid, why should I be?"

Lin Feng said, "Alright, let's go, our destination is that faculty and staff dormitory building!"

Following Lin Feng's finger, Li Mingsheng saw a gloomy two-story building with a lone lamp shining from the top, appearing particularly terrifying and eerie in the night. Li Mingsheng suddenly shivered inexplicably, his whole body trembling.

Lin Feng noticed Li Mingsheng's unusual expression and asked, "What's wrong?"

Li Mingsheng cursed, "It's so hot, and I suddenly shivered for no reason."

Lin Feng said in a deep voice, "It seems he knows we're here."

Li Mingsheng asked, "Who? Luo Yang?"

Lin Feng said solemnly, "It's not just Luo Yang, but also this shady place, the instigator of this series of events."

Li Mingsheng remained silent, because even if Lin Feng explained, he didn't really understand these feng shui matters.

Lin Feng took out a triangular amulet he had prepared and handed it to Li Mingsheng, saying, "Keep it safe. It's been blessed by a high monk and can ward off evil spirits!"

Li Mingsheng accepted it without ceremony and put it in his pocket. He knew that Lin Feng knew more about these things than he did, and naturally had a way to deal with them. He must have been prepared in advance.

The two walked towards the dormitory building, one after the other. The dormitory door was open, like the throat of a demon, as if waiting for their arrival. Just as they reached the door, the lights on the roof suddenly went out. A chill swept over them.

Lin Feng stopped, took out the Bagua (a set of divination tools) he had prepared earlier from his pocket, placed it on the steps at the door, and then gestured for Li Mingsheng to come in with him.

The chill in the hallway intensified, as a cold wind seemed to blow in from nowhere, its wisps seeping through their thin clothing and licking at their skin, sending shivers down their spines.

A few scraps of paper were swept up by the wind, swirled in the air, and slowly fell to the ground, as if held up by an invisible hand.

Visibility in the stairwell was extremely low. Lin Feng took out a lighter and lit it with a "snap." The tiny spark in the darkness calmed the two of them down considerably.

Lin Feng found Luo Yang's dormitory and was about to knock on the door when it suddenly creaked open by itself.

The two watched nervously as the door slowly opened. Inside, Luo Yang sat on the bed, head bowed. Moonlight shone on his lowered head; he remained motionless.

Lin Feng clutched a talisman tightly in his hand and tentatively called out, "Luo Yang."

"You're here, come in," Luo Yang's voice was flat and emotionless, as if it came from hell.

As soon as Lin Feng and Li Mingsheng entered the dormitory, the door slammed shut automatically.

The inside and outside seemed like two different worlds; closing the door felt like closing off life and hope as well. Lin Feng slowly sensed something was wrong and regretted his earlier rashness, which had put Li Mingsheng in danger as well. Now, with no better option, Lin Feng could only grit his teeth and deal with Luo Yang and this strangely eerie place.
