Volume One: The Virgin's Tears
Chapter 1
"Miss, Miss..."
Feng Nian'en held a flashlight in one hand and turned up the collar of her trench coat with the other. Although it was already April, a warm spring month, the moonlight and breeze in the suburbs still carried a chilly feel.
"Miss, everyone is waiting for you to come back!"
He shouted again, but the only response he received was the rustling of swaying branches.
"Miss, stop playing. Miss Judy wants to go home."
Feng Nian'en shouted, the beam of her flashlight swaying around. Under the full moonlight, the branches intertwined, casting swaying shadows on the grass.
Feng Nian'en's gaze searched in the shadows. Having been Zhang Hanwen's follower for three years, he naturally understood this young lady's temper and knew very well that her disappearance was aimed at him. Perhaps she was already back by the campfire, receiving admiring glances from Judy and the others, or even sitting in the car, talking about his idiocy as she returned to the city.
But he still had to look for her here, because he couldn't be sure what might happen. What if Zhang Hanwen didn't go back, what if something happened to her here? Not only would he be fired, but it might also implicate his father.
"Miss...Miss?"
Upon seeing the faint yellow light behind the tree branch, Feng Nian'en exclaimed in confusion. But the light drifted away into the distance. He hesitated for a moment, touched the amulet his mother had given him since childhood that he had worn around his neck, and then chased after it.
He followed the ball of light, but when he got behind the tree, the light disappeared. He immediately took a flashlight and waved it around.
"Miss, stop playing, you'll catch a cold, and if the master finds out..."
When the flashlight beam shone on a dark figure, Feng Nian'en gasped. His hand trembled, and the flashlight almost fell to the ground.
"Didn't anyone tell you that this is very impolite?" The dark figure moved away from the light, swaying silently as if illuminated by moonlight.
"I'm sorry." Feng Nian'en turned the flashlight around and swallowed hard. "I was just... startled."
"Oh? What scared you?"
Feng Nian'en looked at him. Under the moonlight was a child's face, about ten years old, but with a bewitching beauty. There was a playful smile on his lips that was not in line with his age, and his eyes, his long and narrow phoenix eyes, seemed unusually deep.
While he was observing the other person, the child was clearly also sizing him up.
"So ugly."
"Huh?" Feng Nian'en was taken aback, unsure of what the child was saying.
The child pouted, "It's really ugly. How did Wakaba's taste become so bad?"
Feng Nian'en touched his face. He knew he wasn't handsome, especially standing next to Zhang Hanwen, but he wasn't ugly either. However, he hadn't stooped to arguing about looks with a child. He smiled gently: "Camping with your parents? Are you lost?"
“Although it’s ugly,” the child didn’t answer, but continued, “it’s fine since it was Wakaya who chose it.”
"Huh?" Why is this child's talk so strange?
“Since Ruoya chose you, it doesn’t matter if you’re ugly.” The child suddenly looked up.
Feng Nian'en was horrified to discover that two sharp teeth were protruding from those thin red lips, small and white and reflective.
"ghost!"
When he realized what the other person was, he hurriedly moved his feet, almost falling to the ground. He unconsciously let go of the flashlight and ran forward frantically.
But the child was faster, leaping onto his shoulder almost as soon as he took a step. Fine teeth bit into his neck, and a stinging chill spread through his body. He ran, feeling his legs grow weaker and weaker, his vision gradually blurring.
He was dying. He knew it. He didn't know if he screamed. He only remembered running, running frantically, forgetting to pull the demon off his shoulder, forgetting to pray. Then, everything stopped, and his hazy consciousness felt him lying on the ground. Life faded as the temperature dropped.
Then, he tasted a sweet, warm, and sticky flavor. He sucked on it greedily, knowing that this warmth could keep him alive; he didn't want to die…
"Stop, Cangya!"
A sharp scream pierced the tranquil night sky.
“Too late, Ruoya.” The boy pulled his arm out, licked the blood off it, and smiled slyly. “He’s already drunk my blood, he’s mine now.”
Why did you do that?
"Why, why are you asking me why?" His narrow eyes shot out angry glares. "I joined the vampire clan at the same time as you... no, a few days earlier than you, so why can't I have a junior? Why can't I become the eldest son before you?"
"Really, is it for this? Do you really want to be the eldest son-in-law?"
Cangya avoided her gaze and sneered, "What else could it be for? By becoming the eldest son, I can leave the trivial matters to the younger generation and gain my own power. Why wouldn't I want that?"
Ruoya sighed: "What about the Prince?"
"A prince?" The boy shrugged. "At most, he'll lock me up for a few days. Anyway, you'll tell him that you gave me this opportunity, and even if he's unhappy, there's nothing he can do about it."
Ruoya looked at him, her eyes, hardened by the passage of time, now tinged with a faint sadness. She sighed again and turned her gaze to Feng Nian'en on the ground. Even without a vampire's night vision, the bright moonlight was enough for her to see the figure on the ground. She immediately gasped: "Cangya!"
"What's wrong?"
"It's not him, you've got the wrong person! We didn't choose him!"
"No?" The boy frowned. "It's impossible that it isn't. He saw the will-o'-the-wisp I made. No one else could have seen it except him."
“But it really isn’t!” Ruoya grabbed his hand. “Zhang Hanwen is a woman! Although this person often appears around her, he’s just helping her with chores.”
"A woman? Impossible! You can't fool me!" Cangya roared furiously. "Only he saw the will-o'-the-wisp I made. It was aimed at Zhang Hanwen. I couldn't be wrong!"
"I don't know what happened." Ruoya rubbed her temples wearily. "I don't know what went wrong, but it's definitely not."
"you!"
"Do you think it's possible for this person, with their appearance, to be allowed to join the vampire clan?"
Cangya fell silent. While vampires might have different standards for selecting juniors, one thing remained constant: appearance. Although not explicitly stated in the rules, every vampire member would choose handsome men and women as juniors.
Realizing that he had mistaken the person who had a
