Rumor: He's accusing us but not telling us.

Yang Ming angrily slammed a newspaper onto the table:

"Outrageous! Utterly outrageous! How could such a thing happen?"

Zhao Xiaowei looked surprised:

"What happened? Wasn't the case you were working on solved? I saw you prepared so much material, weren't you supposed to be able to write something decent this time?"

"The boss wouldn't let me write it, he let someone else write it! That's fine, what difference does it make who writes it? I wouldn't dare say I'm the best writer. The problem is, Jia Shaowei was busy hanging out with his friends, he didn't do any interviews, yet he wrote this incoherent mess! Now, experts have summarized the basic characteristics of this type of psychopathic murder: there is no explicit motive for killing, but the murder is driven by some abnormal psychological addiction or trigger. Usually, their targets are a specific type of person, and the robbery during the murder is usually incidental and not the main purpose. The police have never said that Qu Baoyuan committed rape, nor have they ever said that he robbed valuables. What is especially intolerable is that Jia Shaowei actually said that the murderer's psychopathism was caused by his ex-wife divorcing him."

Zhao Xiaowei quickly picked up the article and read it through:

Masked sex offender, serial rapist and murderer, depraved man who climbs rooftops for his debauchery

{Exclusive Interview with Jia Shaowei, Our Reporter} Police stated that four serious crimes involving burglary, rape, and murder occurred consecutively starting on May 31st, and all have been solved. The suspect, Qu Baoyuan, has been apprehended. To the reporter's astonishment, he is only 1.60 meters tall and always committed his crimes alone. All four cases were committed by him alone, and even while suffering from tuberculosis, he still found time to climb to rooftops for sexual indulgence.

The crime occurs every two weeks, with the target being the rooftop.

Case Replay 1: Around 11 PM on May 31, Ms. Zhang, a single woman living on the top floor of a residential building in Gujing District, was watching TV when she suddenly saw a masked assailant jump out from behind the curtains on her balcony. Terrified, she screamed "Help!" and ran towards the corridor outside her apartment. The perverted devil, who had intended to have his way with her, failed and had to flee.

Case Replay 2: On June 14th, Ms. Zhao, a single woman living on the top floor of an apartment building in Gujing District, returned home from a walk. She had just fallen asleep when she suddenly felt difficulty breathing through her neck. She then discovered a masked man straddling her. Ms. Zhao, still pale as she recalls the incident, told reporters that she was in her thirties and had never experienced such a violent intrusion before. However, the brave Ms. Zhao fought fiercely with the assailant. The suspect, only 1.60 meters tall, was clearly no match for Ms. Zhao's strength. During the struggle, Ms. Zhao managed to snatch the assailant's mask, and the fleeing suspect finally opened the door and escaped.

Case Replay 3: On June 29th, the masked perverted sex fiend reappeared. Ms. Huang, a single woman living on the top floor of an apartment building in Gujing District, was tragically murdered. This young victim was raped and then beaten to death with a blunt object. Her face was mangled, her body riddled with holes—a gruesome sight. The police officer who participated in the crime scene recalled the scene with lingering fear, telling reporters that he felt nauseous and had never seen such a cruel killer in his over twenty years of service. The perpetrator also wrote a strange character on the victim's back, which could only be found in the Kangxi Dictionary. All of the victim's valuables were stolen. The entire city was plunged into a strange terror, with women living in constant fear.

Case Replay 4: On July 5, another robbery, rape, and murder occurred on the rooftop of a residential building in Gujing District. The victim was a young, single woman. "The scene was truly horrific," an officer in charge of the investigation told reporters. "The victim had multiple stab wounds, including a knife stuck in her neck, and her lower body and back were covered with almost perverse marks from the perpetrator..." The suspect also looted some valuables from the victim's home.

Evidence secured, suspect arrested

When the investigation encountered difficulties, DNA extracted from the crime scene, once identified, provided a reliable reference for confirming the suspect's identity, ultimately revealing the perpetrator. Qu Baoyuan, an unemployed man in his forties, had been twice sentenced to re-education through labor and nine years in prison for crimes including theft. He confessed to the police, saying, "I originally intended to steal from her house, but I found her sleeping, so..." Qu then attempted to assault her, but the awakened victim resisted fiercely. Qu then used an iron axe to knock her unconscious and raped her while she was unconscious.

According to the police, Qu Baoyuan had been married twice. During his imprisonment, his ex-wife divorced him. Qu Baoyuan, who did not want to divorce, fell seriously ill after this sudden change. This incident inevitably caused a great change in his psychology, ultimately leading to his psychological abnormality.

What was Qu's motive for committing the crimes? Was it really just to steal property, as he claimed? What preparations did he make before each crime? Why did he specifically target beautiful, single women on rooftops? What other little-known stories lie behind the cases? This newspaper will continue to disclose the detailed process of the case's investigation; please pay close attention to our follow-up reports.

After reading it, Zhao Xiaowei looked at Yang Ming with a puzzled expression:

"I think this article is just not as well-written as yours, but I can't see any other problems. Are you upset because you weren't asked to write it?"

"Thank you for thinking so highly of me! The vitality of news lies in its truth. There are many obvious fabrications in his story. His claims of rape and robbery of valuables are purely imaginary. He didn't even attend the police press conference. Who spoke to him personally? More importantly, how can you so easily conclude that his ex-wife's divorce was the reason for this deranged killer's behavior? Do you have evidence? Do you have a psychologist's analysis? What kind of pressure will your ex-wife bear by making such irresponsible statements? Can you bear that responsibility? What if she sues you? Besides, our reporter is too insensitive. You said he was sentenced to nine years in prison. Is it so easy for a woman to raise a child alone? She had no choice; she had to divorce. Yet you accuse her without any evidence. What's wrong with her divorce?"

"I still don't understand. If he's a pervert, he must have been traumatized. Since he doesn't want a divorce, it must be because a divorce would trigger him. What's wrong with making that assumption?"

"You can't overstate how evil this person is today. You can say he's utterly wicked, deserves to die, and is guilty of a capital offense. But how did he get to this point? Did he also come from childhood? If we look back at this process, we can't deny that any criminal is a product of society. Society may not bear the responsibility for the crimes he has committed, but society cannot fail to examine itself; otherwise, such criminals will continue to emerge. Look at what Li Meijin, a professor of criminal psychology at the People's Public Security University of China, said?"

Yang Ming turned on his computer:

She said, "If you really want to study the psychology of preventing these kinds of criminals, then I need to tell society to focus on the way children are raised and educated in their early years. This upbringing is a crucial factor in determining a person's character, and character development is a significant factor in determining their later behaviors. Many people think that Huang Yong committed crimes because he watched a violent movie, but those who study psychology know that violent movies are just a trigger. People pay more attention to what they can see and touch, but they don't understand what happened before that, thinking it's too distant. I said that's not right, you're ignoring the long-term causes, and such people will appear again." Shang Xiuyun, one of the top ten judges in the country and a juvenile court judge, put it even more clearly: there are no bad teenagers, only unfortunate teenagers; problem teenagers are the product of problem parents. However, Jia Shaowei's rubbish article simply pushed the responsibility that society should bear onto the suspect's ex-wife. Was it because he was ignorant? Or because he was frivolous? Isn't that a bit too cruel?

"I still don't understand. He killed someone. If you don't pursue him, are you going to pursue his elementary school teacher? Or his parents?"

"Legally, it's impossible to hold them accountable, but from a social responsibility perspective and from a matter of social conscience, there is a question of accountability. This accountability isn't about assigning legal responsibility, but rather that if our society continues to fail to recognize the social responsibility for the emergence of such psychopaths, then we will never eliminate them; their numbers will only increase. Sun Dongdong, a professor at Peking University Law School, believes that the upbringing of psychopaths is often lacking in two aspects: firstly, they receive excessive maternal or paternal love at home; secondly, they don't receive the love they deserve within the family. These two situations lead to a conflict between their original thought patterns and society after they enter it. The correctness of family education is crucial to a person's mental health. In 2002, after a school massacre in Germany, the Berliner Zeitung published an editorial warning society and the public: 'He is declaring war on society in his mind, and we know nothing about it; he is accusing us, but he doesn't tell us.' This soberly introspective attitude undoubtedly sets an example for us."

"What you say may make sense, but it's just your inference; you don't have any facts to prove your point."

Yang Ming burst into laughter:

"You flatter me. When I said this, it wasn't something I came up with on a whim. I'm not that knowledgeable; I'm just parroting what others have said! If you're interested, you can take a look at the materials I've collected."

Zhao Xiaowei remembered how eye-opening her eyes were when she saw his materials last time, so she immediately ran over to his computer to look at them:

Various cases reveal two distinct external characteristics of psychopathic murders. Firstly, the perpetrators often have a history of imprisonment or administrative punishment. Consequently, some argue that these cases expose a serious failure of the educational function of Chinese prisons, representing a situation of "labor without education."

According to the police, Li Pingping from Beijing was sentenced to one year of supervised release in May 1980 for hooliganism; in December 1985, he was sentenced to six months of detention for theft; in 1996, he was administratively detained for 15 days for assaulting someone; Huang Yong from Henan had been punished by the government; and Yang Xinhai began his career as a hitman after being sentenced to re-education through labor twice and reform through labor once…

However, Han Yusheng expressed a different view to China's *Newsweek*. He believes that the overall effect of my country's compulsory rehabilitation of criminals over the past few decades has been good. More than 90% of prisoners do not re-offend after their release. In contrast, many foreign countries have recidivism rates exceeding 50%, making my country's prison reform a success. However, on the other hand, my country has a large population and a large number of prisoners, and these prisoners are mobile. Even if only a small percentage re-offend, such a large prison population creates a significant number, thus giving the illusion of "labor without education."

Han Yusheng said that today, some people say that some "perverted killers" are serious offenders, and therefore blame my country's prison reform system. This is unfair and not objective. In fact, the public should pay more attention to the reasons that led the criminal to commit the first crime.

Regardless of the motives behind a criminal's first offense, it has been noted that once released from prison and reintegrated into society, without regular employment or a legitimate means of livelihood, they are likely to revert to their old ways. Wen Guoshan, deputy director of the Luohe Procuratorate and prosecutor in the Yang Xinhai case in Henan, told China Newsweek, "The only thing we can do with released prisoners is 'not discriminate' against them; it's very difficult to solve their employment problems. If we arrange jobs for them, it will create a negative influence on society, potentially leading some to commit crimes specifically for this purpose, and it could also affect the normal social value system. Therefore, we are actually in a very difficult position regarding the handling of released prisoners." (Excerpt from China Newsweek: "How to Deal with the Tragedy of Psychopathic Criminals?")

(Berlin, May 9, Guangming Daily) In Germany, the issue of some teenagers turning to crime is not simply resolved by imprisonment. It is believed that keeping convicted juveniles in jail for extended periods isolates them from society and exposes them to "cross-infection." Germany's Juvenile Court Act stipulates community corrections for juvenile offenders. This includes requiring them to perform community service under the guidance and supervision of professionals in designated locations for a specified period. This allows them to compensate for the harm they have caused to society through community service, fostering a sense of social responsibility, self-respect, and self-reliance, ultimately leading to repentance and rehabilitation.

The causes of juvenile delinquency are complex, involving both social environmental factors and the physiological and psychological factors of the adolescents themselves. Only by addressing the issues from the perspectives of schools, families, and society can juvenile delinquency be effectively prevented.

Love is the capacity to create love.

[Germany] E. Fromm

In terms of material wealth, giving signifies abundance. The truly wealthy are not those who are rolling in money, but those who are generous. Psychologically speaking, a miser, constantly fearing loss, is in reality impoverished and destitute, no matter how much wealth he possesses. Those who are willing to give are wealthy and always feel financially secure enough to help others; only when they are destitute and barely surviving can they no longer derive joy from giving. However, everyday experience tells us that the understanding of necessities varies from person to person, depending on each individual's personality and actual material possessions. It is well known that the poor are more willing to give than the rich, but poverty beyond a certain limit renders giving impossible, not because it directly causes suffering, but because it deprives the poor of the joy they can experience in giving.

However, the most important aspect of giving does not lie in the realm of material wealth; it exists in the realm unique to human nature. What does a person give to others? He gives himself, his most precious possession, his life. This does not necessarily mean that he sacrifices his life for others. It primarily means that he gives his vitality and energy to others. He gives others his joy, interests, understanding, knowledge, humor, sorrow, and all the manifestations of his vibrant life. He gives out the content of his life force, thereby enriching and fulfilling others; he deepens his own sense of vitality, thereby invigorating and strengthening the life force of others. He does not give for the sake of receiving; giving itself is an unparalleled joy. But in giving, he inevitably activates something within others, which in turn affects him. Therefore, in true giving, the giver cannot help but receive something in return. Giving means that others also become givers, and both share the joy bestowed upon them by what they have awakened; giving creates a new life for both the giver and the receiver, and both receive the blessing of new life.

In terms of love, this means that love is the capacity to create love; incapacity is the inability to create love.

Marx once expressed the same idea in beautiful language: "We now assume that man is man, and that man's relationship with the world is a relationship in accordance with human nature. Therefore, you can only exchange love for love, trust for trust, and so on. If you want to enjoy art, you yourself must be an artistically cultivated person. If you want to influence others, you yourself must be someone who can actually inspire and uplift them. If your love does not evoke love in the other person—that is, if your love as love does not create love, if you, as a lover, do not make yourself the beloved through your own life—then your love is powerless, and such love is unfortunate." Giving is receiving, and this is not limited to the realm of love. Teachers are taught by students, actors benefit from audiences, and psychoanalysts benefit from patients. As long as both the giver and receiver do not objectify the other, and as long as they are in a creative and genuine relationship, then giving necessarily means receiving.

Needless to say, since love is about giving, the capacity to love necessarily depends on the development of one's character. Only those with a fully productive inclination are capable of love. Such a person has overcome dependency and the narcissistic delusion of omniscience and omnipotence, and has abandoned the desire to deprive others or amass wealth; they are confident in their own human strength and dare to achieve their goals solely through their own efforts. Whoever lacks these qualities is afraid to contribute and loses the courage to give love.

Besides giving, the other essential elements of love also fully demonstrate its vibrant and dynamic character. These elements, which are common to all types of love, are: concern, responsibility, respect, and knowledge.

After reviewing this information, Zhao Xiaowei suddenly became sad:

"The perverted demon has been caught, and from now on, the nights will be peaceful. So, you can't take me home anymore?"
