Kapitel 6

I drifted off to sleep, and when I opened my eyes again it was already dark. The night was deep and dark outside the window, with clear starlight refracting into thin lines on the gray bed curtains, quiet and peaceful, which finally made me feel relieved.

I'm starting to miss my mom. I wonder if she's asleep yet? I should have asked the leader when we were at the hot springs...

Outside the bed curtains, wisps of smoke curled from the bronze incense burner adorned with auspicious beasts. I couldn't help but think of the leader, soaked to the bone, from his brows and eyes to his collarbone and his taut body...

I blushed shamefully.

My mind is a jumbled mess of images of the Alliance Leader's every smile and gesture. I feel a little sad. I've been known as his fiancée for three years, and I haven't even held his hand.

To avoid dwelling on my grief, I decided to go for a walk. As soon as I opened the door, I was startled by Changhuan sleeping outside.

On this chilly autumn night, he leaned against the green wall by the door, arms crossed, his eyes buried in his knees, and fell asleep.

I squatted down and looked at him for a long time before finally going to the room to get a quilt and cover him with it.

I hope that if I ever fall into such a state of destitution, someone will have the kindness to give me a blanket to sleep in.

As the night deepened, I carefully walked around him and headed out, completely unaware of his slightly trembling shoulders.

It's just me and Lotus Sister in this courtyard. I heard there were a few other candidates for guardian maidens chosen together before, but they're all gone now.

Just as I was about to sneak away in the dark to find the young boy in the forbidden area, someone behind me said, "Miss."

I was startled and turned around to see Changhuan lifting her head from her arms. Her dark, alluring eyes, visible beneath her disheveled hair, were looking at me. I smiled sheepishly and said, "Did I wake you up?"

He didn't answer, but just looked at me for a long time before saying softly, "The High Priest has sent someone to inform you and Miss Baizhi to come to the main hall."

I was taken aback. "When did this happen?" I looked at Lotus Sister's room again, but there wasn't a single light on.

He pursed his lips. "Before nightfall."

A million wild horses galloped through my mind, and I turned and ran towards the main hall. Damn it! If I hadn't covered him with a blanket, would he have deliberately forgotten again?! How could Su Xie keep such a menace by her side?! Shouldn't she at least have a trusted confidant?! Is she really that despicable? Doesn't she have anyone she can trust?!

My mind was in turmoil, and I dared not take a step. The priest already disliked me, and if I made any further mistakes, even the old cult leader couldn't protect me!

I ran to the main hall, almost pushing myself to the limit, and knelt down inside, panting heavily.

As expected, Lotus Sister was already there. The entire hall was dimly lit. The old sect leader was not there. Yan Shu and another serious-looking old man sat on either side of the main hall. Lotus Sister stood to the side and asked in surprise, "Sister Su Xie, why are you so late? The high priest has been waiting for you for a long time."

"You bastard!" I was panting so hard I was about to collapse when I heard Yan Shu lean back in his chair, open his folding fan with a whoosh, and sneer, "Little Su Xie, you have quite the airs. You've made me and the Left Protector wait for you for quite a while."

The old man sitting on the left snorted coldly, his face dark and upright; he was clearly the Left Protector, Old Zhao the Immortal.

I quickly caught my breath and said, "Actually, I..."

"Left Protector," Yan Shu interrupted me, smiling as he looked at Old Man Zhao, and asked, "What do you think we should do about this?"

My heart skipped a beat, and I looked at Old Man Zhao expectantly, only to hear him say in a cold voice, "According to the rules, he will be flogged forty times."

Is it really necessary to be so ruthless!

I was kneeling on the ground, about to explain, when Yan Shu slammed his fan shut and exclaimed, "The Left Protector is truly biased, settling things at forty..."

You bitch!

I wanted to torture him with my eyes! But I couldn't...

I suppressed my surging emotions and tried to keep my tone calm as I asked, "May I ask, Left Protector, is this forty lashes a punishment for Su Xie's late arrival?"

The Left Protector snorted, taking it as an answer.

I then said, "If Su Xie is not convinced, it was not my fault alone last night."

"Oh?" Yan Shu looked at me with a smile, resting his chin on his hand. "Then tell me, who else is guilty?"

I took a deep breath and, keeping a blank expression, asked, "May I ask who Your Highness sent to inform Su Xie?"

A girl in scarlet clothes stepped forward beside Yan Shu. I looked at her and asked, "Did you notify me?"

The girl in crimson nodded, about to reply, when I raised my voice and demanded, "Did you personally inform me?"

The girl in scarlet turned pale, looked at Yan Shu, and then knelt down, saying, "I happened to run into Miss Ye when I went to the other courtyard. She said she would take me to inform Miss Su."

"Oh." I looked at Lotus Sister again and asked with a smile, "Bai Zhi Sister, why didn't you inform me?"

Her pretty face turned pale instantly. She looked up and saw that Yan Shu and the Left Protector were both looking at her. She trembled and said timidly, "Sister Su Xie was resting at the time. I clearly informed Chang Huan to tell her..."

She's a traitor! I really can't help but call her a slut! I thought that since Changhuan and she had a relationship, she would at least show some consideration, but I didn't expect her to betray Changhuan so quickly!

"Chang Huan?" The Left Protector frowned, puzzled.

Yan Shu chuckled, "So it's all the fault of that male slave, Xiao Su Xie." He looked at me, tapping his palm with his folding fan, and said, "How amusing..."

Chapter 8, Part 7

It's all the fault of the male slaves.

The upright and incorruptible Left Protector pondered for a moment and then concluded: "In that case, imprison that male slave in the Heavenly Punishment Prison and execute him tomorrow to feed him to the snow eagle."

The evil cult that disregards human life... actually wants to execute them!

I looked at Ye Baizhi with grief and indignation. She still had that innocent, pure look on her face, showing no sign of pleading for mercy. Then I looked at the High Priest, who was high above, playing with people's lives with great interest, a smile playing on his lips. The words I wanted to say stuck in my throat. After thinking for a moment, I swallowed them down and shut my mouth.

After this brief interlude, without even a moment's silence, Yan Shu said, "Left Protector, shall we begin the main topic?"

The Left Protector nodded and said, "I have summoned you here today to conduct the final test."

Ye Baizhi also knelt down beside me, obediently waiting for the test questions.

"This time, you two will each handle a task," the Left Protector continued. "As before, there are no rules, you can use any means necessary without any taboos, and in the end, only the result matters."

By any means necessary? Without any scruples? I was somewhat surprised and asked, "What if she and I both complete the mission in the end?"

How do we divide this?

Before the question could even leave his mouth, Yan Shu shamelessly laughed and exclaimed in amazement, "I never expected to hear such a question from Xiao Su Xie."

I smiled modestly, "I'm sorry to have made you laugh so rudely, High Priest!"

"As before," said the Left Protector, Old Man Zhao, solemnly, "the last one alive will be the winner."

What does that mean? It chills me to the bone. What does it mean that the last survivor is the winner? Does it mean that we can kill each other while completing a mission?

Seeing my still somewhat confused look, Yan Shu continued to mock, "When did Little Su Xie learn to pretend to be innocent? Have you forgotten those eight of your kind that you eliminated? Tsk tsk, your ruthlessness is something I'm ashamed of."

My mind went blank for a moment, and I suddenly understood the meaning of the eight words "ruthless and unscrupulous". Su Xie actually did such a despicable thing as killing each other back then, he deserved to die!

The Left Protector sent two maids, each carrying a red tray, to me and Ye Baizhi. Each tray contained an envelope and a token.

He said, "The envelope contains your mission for the two of you. The deadline is half a month. During this period, you can come and go as you please with this Azure Dragon Token."

I took the envelope and the token, looking at the four little dragons in the corners of the token with mixed feelings of joy and worry. Was I happy to be able to freely enter and leave the Demonic Sect? Was I worried because I didn't know what kind of deadly mission it might be?

Ye Baizhi, with her ever-present sweet smile, bowed and said, "Baizhi obeys."

The Left Protector waved his hand, making his final farewell remarks, "Whether you live or die depends on your individual abilities. The one who can stand alive in this hall in half a month will be the new Right Protector."

I bowed and knelt down with Ye Baizhi.

The Left Protector waved for us to step back. Just as I was about to get up and leave, Yan Shu suddenly said, "Little Su, thank you." I turned around and a face as white as jade was right in front of me. I was startled and staggered backward, but Yan Shu reached out and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me forward a step until we were face to face.

Showing off your light-footed skills is impressive! It's just teleportation! My guild leader can do that too!

He looked at me with a half-smile, his eyes sparkling with spring-like warmth, a dimple playing at the corners of his lips. He breathed very softly on my face and said, "I really hope you'll still be standing perfectly fine in front of me in half a month, otherwise I'll lose my appetite and be so bored..." He held me tightly and laughed, his hand trembling slightly.

What a show-off bitch!

I took a deep breath and smiled, "Thank you for your kindness, High Priest, but I'm truly sorry, my heart already belongs to someone else... I really cannot accept your heartfelt affection." Then, I shyly punched his arm away and ran off.

Yan Shu was stunned for a moment, and then I heard his utterly shameful laughter.

===============================================================================

As expected, the upright and incorruptible Left Protector Zhao was efficient and decisive. When I returned, Chang Huan had already been taken to the Heavenly Punishment Prison. The room was clean and tidy, and the quilt I had covered him with last night was still on the bed. I went over and saw a piece of paper under the quilt. On the white paper, black ink, there was a line of small characters written neatly and elegantly: "I hope you will spare my family, thank you."

I put away the note, not in a hurry to do anything. I never even considered taking on the mission or becoming the Right Protector. I just wanted to leave the Demonic Sect as soon as possible. Now that I had the Azure Dragon Token that allowed me to come and go as I pleased, everything would be much easier.

I tucked the envelope into my pocket, grabbed the token, and slipped out. I ran to the red wall, and after making sure no one was around, I jumped over it.

Leaving the Demonic Cult always requires saying goodbye to the young boy. He was my first friend after my rebirth, and he had been in the Demonic Cult for a long time, so there were some things that worried me, such as that "life and death bond" thing.

A gentle night breeze rustled through the lush grass, and a dim, yellow light shone faintly from the side room, attracting moths to flutter about.

I knocked on the door and heard the young boy inside ask, "Is this Su Su?"

The door creaked open, and the pretty face of the young boy peeked out, dappled by the lamplight, smiling at me with a pair of dimples.

The fragrant breeze, the shadows of flowers, the boy in the small room—oh my, it's so enchanting! I couldn't help but feel my heart swell with joy, and I smiled happily. "How did you know it was me?"

He tilted his head. "I climbed over the wall in the middle of the night. There was no one else but Su Su. Very few people come to see me."

Heaven help me, I couldn't help but reach out and pat his head. He shrank back like a kitten, blinked his eyes, and then smiled.

"I'll show you something!" He pulled me inside mysteriously.

"What is it?" I laughed as he pulled me along. "I came to see you tonight because I have something I want to ask you..." The moment I stepped into the inner room, I froze, staring in horror at the bed. The rest of my sentence stuck in my throat.

What's going on here?!

I looked at the young boy in surprise, but he pointed excitedly at the unconscious person on the bed and said, "I found this person in the garden. This person is dying and is seriously injured!"

Hey! What's with that blush on your face?! How excited are you to see someone get hurt?!

Looking at the boy's excited expression, and then at the unconscious person on the bed, I was certain I hadn't mistaken him for someone else. I asked as gently as possible, "Do you know... who this person is?"

"I don't know." The young boy shook his head, then smiled and said, "But he was injured..."

"I know." I scratched my head and asked, "Then do you know why he was injured?"

"I don't know." He shook his head again, but couldn't help adding, "But he was seriously injured..."

"I know!" I looked at him helplessly. "This person's background is unknown. What if he turns out to be a bad guy if you save him..."

The boy blinked, then asked, puzzled, "Is there anything worse than the Demonic Sect?"

No, that's not true.

I pondered this for a moment, unsure how to tell him that the person he saved was none other than the Alliance Leader whom the entire Demonic Sect was currently searching for. If others discovered that he had secretly harbored the Alliance Leader, he would surely die. But I also couldn't let him throw the Alliance Leader out. It wasn't easy for someone who grew up in the Demonic Sect to retain such a kind and innocent heart; I couldn't instill bad ideas in him.

"What I mean is..." I explained to him with some difficulty, "You're a kind and good kid, but..."

The boy blinked his innocent eyes at me, making me feel ashamed of my selfishness in standing by to save myself. Unable to continue, I could only sigh and ask, "Did anyone see you save him?"

"No," the boy smiled obediently. "I rescued him secretly; no one saw me." Then he asked me, "Is Su Su a bad person?"

"Hmm..." I thought for a moment and said, "It depends on who you're referring to. To most people, he's a wonderful person, perfect and flawless, but to some people..."

"Does Su Su have a grudge against him?" the boy suddenly asked me, blinking as he looked at my face. "Su Su, why is your face red?"
