Chapter 14

The sudden knocking startled everyone.

"Ms. Su, are you home? This is Director Wang from the Academic Affairs Office."

Everyone was taken aback. Ye Cheng checked the time on his phone; it was already past eleven. Why would he come so late?

Su Youqing was called by Hu Rongrong and Luo Shimin. When she got to the door, her voice was still a little slurred, "Director Wang, what brings you here so late?"

"Well, I just came from the principal's house. He asked me to come and see you. Are you alright?"

Su Youqing hesitated whether to open the door, but Ye Cheng said, "Let him in."

Su Youqing opened the door, and Director Wang stepped in. The room was pitch black, and nothing could be seen. "Why didn't you turn on the lights?"

"Wait at the door."

Director Wang touched the switch, and with a click, the light turned on. The crowd, who were used to the darkness, found the light too bright and covered their eyes.

"You have guests at home?" Director Wang was somewhat surprised to see Ye Chengxia and the others. "The principal asked me to check on you. If you have any difficulties, please let me know, and the academy will help you solve them."

"They are all my good friends and classmates who came to keep me company."

Director Wang pointed at Xia Chen, "You know him very well? He only transferred here recently."

“He came with me, is that not allowed?” Luo Shimin stepped forward.

Director Wang pretended not to hear this and changed the subject, saying, "This building is really strange. As soon as I entered, I felt a chill down my back and cold air coming from the back of my neck." Before he could finish speaking, a red light shot out from behind Director Wang and went straight for Su Youqing's neck.

The red light was moving so fast that by the time everyone reacted, a strange thing was already wrapped around Su Youqing's neck. The thing was so ugly that it was impossible to tell its head from its tail; its surface was covered in scales. If it weren't for the foul, fishy smell, everyone would have thought it was a piece of intestine.

Ye Cheng was the first to react, shouting, "Quick, save them!"

Before anyone could move, Hu Rongrong let out a scream, "Ah!" and fell backward.

024 Lost Memories

Everything happened so suddenly; within seconds, Su Youqing and Hu Rongrong collapsed to the ground one after the other. Ye Cheng, as a policeman, reacted much faster than the others. He was the first to rush to Su Youqing's side, grabbing the intestinal worm that was tightly wrapped around her neck. Su Youqing was already struggling to breathe, her face flushed red, and the veins on her head bulging.

Ye Cheng grabbed the intestinal worm's tail. The worm's body secreted a strange, slippery mucus that made it difficult to hold on. Ye Cheng's hand slipped, and the worm broke free, whipping towards him with a foul stench. Ye Cheng couldn't dodge in time and was slapped across the face by the worm, leaving a two-finger-wide bloody welt.

This jolted Ye Cheng awake. Su Youqing's face turned from red to purple; he couldn't deal with the intestinal worms on his own. "What are you all standing there for? Come and help!"

Xia Chen and Ye Cheng grabbed the intestinal worm again, and together they pulled it apart a little.

Luo Shimin helped Hu Rongrong to the sofa and came over to help as well. The three of them pulled together, and there was less than a centimeter between Su Youqing's neck and the intestinal worm. With this little bit of space, Su Youqing's face turned from purple to red, and she gasped for breath.

The three of them were about to subdue the intestinal worms when Ye Cheng turned to look at Hu Rongrong and asked, "What's wrong with her?"

"She just fainted, nothing serious." Luo Shimin was a little excited as she held the intestinal worm. The worms wrapped around Su Youqing's neck again, and no matter how desperately she struggled, she couldn't shake them off. Luo Shimin was the first to grab the intestinal worm with her hand again, "Hurry up and think of something, Teacher Su is about to die."

Ye Cheng grasped the intestinal worm part of Su Youqing's neck with both hands, while Xia Chen grasped the back of her neck in perfect unison. With their combined effort, Su Youqing finally inhaled a sliver of air, not much, but enough to keep her alive.

Xia Chen pulled out one hand and pushed Luo Shimin away, "Go find some usable tools, we can't hold out much longer."

Luo Shimin circled the living room but couldn't find a suitable tool, so she ran into the kitchen. She immediately spotted the kitchen knife on the table, picked it up, and ran back to the living room. "Use this to chop it in half."

Ye Cheng grabbed the cleaver, found the right angle, and slashed fiercely at the intestinal worm. The blade sliced through the worm, leaving only a shallow mark. Ye Cheng tried three times, but it was completely useless; the worm only tightened its grip.

"Go find other tools." Ye Cheng threw down the kitchen knife and grabbed the intestinal worm with his hand again.

Luo Shimin, not knowing which tool would be useful, shouted hysterically, "What tool should I look for? Tell me what tool will be useful."

Xia Chen had a sudden inspiration, "Go find some salt, salt might be useful."

Luo Shimin trusted Xia Chen and ran to the kitchen to find salt.

Ye Cheng asked, "Salt? Will it be useful?"

"The salt is here." Luo Shimin ran out of the kitchen with a bag of salt in her hand, grabbed a handful and sprinkled it on the intestinal worms.

The intestinal worms, upon contact with salt, immediately released Su Youqing's neck and began convulsing on the ground. Luo Shimin seized the opportunity to help Su Youqing up from the ground; her neck already bore bloody welts from being strangled.

"Monster, so you're afraid of salt." A strong murderous aura emanated from Su Youqing as she snatched the salt bag from Luo Shimin's hand and poured it all over the intestinal worms. "This is the consequence of killing my husband. Die!"

The intestinal worms hissed, completely losing their previous ferocity, and collapsed in the salt pile, convulsing.

A triangular head protruded from the thicker end, with a pair of sharp fangs about two centimeters long, which looked like the fangs of a snake, but no one dared to go up and test whether it was poisonous.

"I have no authority to decide this; it's up to our director. You can contact him. Until he agrees, everything is confidential. You must keep it a secret and not mention what happened tonight to anyone else."

"Oh." Director Wang lowered his head, seemingly plotting something.

Bang, bang, bang, the sound of knocking on the door.

Their conversation ended there.

"What happened next was both terrifying and bizarre. Dr. Zuo seemed furious; he grabbed a scalpel and tried to stab Dr. Wu, who dodged it, and the two began to fight. Nurse Luo was terrified, and so was I. It took me a long time before I remembered to call for help. Just as I stood up, Qi Xiaoke woke up, clutching her stomach in obvious pain. Dr. Wu and Dr. Zuo stopped and looked at Qi Xiaoke, while Nurse Luo stood by the bed. I called out, 'Look at Xiaoke, what's wrong?' She didn't move. Suddenly, I heard a chilling cracking sound coming from Xiaoke's stomach. Xiaoke spat out a mouthful of blood and went still, her condition unknown, but her stomach was moving—like a snake." The thing burrowed and weaved inside her stomach, finally bursting through Xiao Ke's belly with a snap. A section of intestine-like substance sprang out, wrapping itself tightly around Nurse Luo's neck. Seeing Xiao Ke's horrific state, Dr. Zuo went berserk, plunging a scalpel into Dr. Wu's chest, blood gushing out like a fountain. Dr. Wu, however, laughed, a chilling chuckle. Dr. Zuo exclaimed in astonishment, "You ate an activated blood core?" Dr. Wu remained silent, continuing to laugh. At that moment, the worm strangled Nurse Luo, then sprang to my neck. My breathing became increasingly difficult; my brain suffered from oxygen deprivation, my vision blurred, and I lost consciousness. I know nothing more about what happened after that.

"I know!" came an unfamiliar voice from the doorway.

Everyone looked towards the doorway and saw a man standing there, wearing a hooded black trench coat, his entire head covered by the hood, obscuring his features. They had been so engrossed in listening that they hadn't even noticed when this man had arrived. All eyes turned to the man in black, from whom a black light emanated. Before anyone could understand what was happening, their bodies, from head to toe, went numb.

Ye Cheng looked at the man in black warily, "Who are you? What do you want?"

The man in black approached and sat down. "I'm not human, I'm Mr. X. I'm here for these two little ones. The black light won't harm your body; you'll return to normal in an hour. It's just a safety measure for our conversation." He was incredibly bold, reaching out to touch the two intestinal worms. The previously ferocious worms didn't flinch, letting Mr. X stroke them, behaving as docilely as two pet dogs, even making comfortable hissing sounds.

This move shocked everyone. Ye Cheng's wary gaze turned into suspicion. If someone could tame intestinal worms, they could certainly command them to kill people.

Mr. X felt uncomfortable with Ye Cheng's gaze. "Officer, I am not a suspect. Please do not look at me like that. It is very impolite."

Xia Chen gave Ye Cheng a wink, "You said you know what happened next, can you tell us?"

“That makes sense.” Mr. X crossed his legs. “What happened next was simple. Dr. Zuo took Dr. Wu to a dark room in the sewers, hoping to find the activated blood core on him. Qi Xiaoke had only been dead for a short time; finding the blood core might save her life. Unfortunately, he failed. His beloved died, and he himself didn't have long to live. Heartbroken, he committed suicide by poisoning himself. "Since you knew, why didn't you stop it from happening?" Xia Chen suddenly became very agitated. "Why? Since you knew, why didn't you save them?"

The man said calmly, “It’s not that I don’t want to save them, it’s that I don’t have the ability to save them. And I only found out about this now, so I’m taking a great risk to come to you. Also, people who do bad things always have to be punished.”

Xia Chen turned his head away from Mr. X, his words enraging Su Youqing, who roared, "Are you implying that my husband deserved to die?"

The man shook his head. "The intestinal worm did visit Nurse Song's home, but Nurse Song had already been infected before it went there."

"You mean Nurse Song's death wasn't an accident, but murder? How is that possible? I was right next to her when she died."

"Officer, you've heard of hypnosis, haven't you? A hypnotized person will completely obey the hypnotist's commands, including suicide."
