Ghosts in Medical School Horror Files - Chapter 25
Ye Cheng said, "We have surveillance footage; just take a look and it will be clear."
Li Xiao sighed and said, "I thought of what you said immediately, but for some reason, the director sealed off last night's surveillance footage. To see it, you need the director and two deputy directors to sign it. Do you dare to ask the director for his signature now?"
Ye Cheng quickly realized that there was only one reason why the bureau chief did this: he didn't want too many people to see the surveillance footage. Could it be that something secret was captured in it?
bell……
Luo Shimin's phone rang. When she answered, her expression changed drastically. After hanging up, she said in a strange tone, "Everyone, the person calling me is Hu Rongrong. She has some incredible news for me to tell you!"
013 The Moving Corpse
Ye Cheng waved his hand and said, "What's happening right now is unbelievable enough. Is there anything more unbelievable? Don't tell me that a crazy woman met a monkey, and the monkey told her that his name was Sun Wukong, and that he spoke fluent American English with a New York accent."
Luo Shimin and Li Xiao were taken aback at first, then burst into laughter. Luo Shimin laughed so hard she could barely breathe, "Officer Ye... how come I... only just realized you... have such a... sense of humor." Even Xia Chen had a faint smile on his face.
After everyone had finished laughing, Ye Cheng said, "Let's talk about what incredible thing the crazy woman encountered."
Luo Shimin coughed twice to clear her throat, then asked seriously, "Don't you want to know where Liu Yanting's body is? Rongrong called me about this."
Ye Cheng, as if springs were attached to his feet, bounced twice and landed in front of Luo Shimin. "The crazy woman saw the corpse? Where? How did she find it?"
Luo Shimin shook her head. "Hu Rongrong didn't see the body; someone else did. She didn't explain clearly on the phone, only saying that she was with three witnesses and told us to hurry back to the academy."
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!" Ye Cheng took the lead, and the four of them squeezed out of the police station building through the window, then squeezed through the crowd, climbed over the wall out of the police station, and took a taxi back to Yishi College.
As soon as Ye Cheng got out of the car, he asked, "Where are Hu Rongrong and the witness? Take me there quickly."
"Come with me."
"Luo Shimin led the way. "Officer Ye, don't be too agitated. With Rongrong there, she won't let the witness get away." Everyone in the academy knows that Hu Rongrong is Luo Shimin's best friend. Offending Hu Rongrong is the same as offending Luo Shimin, and the consequences are extremely serious.
Luo Shimin led the three through the old buildings, and the further they went, the more remote the place became. Xia Chen had been at Yishi Academy for three months, and he had never been to this place before. Ye Cheng couldn't help but ask, "Where are you taking us? Why would Hu Rongrong run to a place like this for no reason? Isn't she afraid of running into bad people?"
“I don’t know what this place was used for before. It’s from the same era as the old buildings and it’s now a warehouse for the school. Rongrong would never come to a place like this on her own. She came with three witnesses. Also, who in Yishi Academy would dare to hurt Rongrong?”
Ye Cheng nodded. The consequences of angering Luo Xie... Ye Cheng shuddered and dared not think any further.
Luo Shimin led the three through a row of bungalows and they saw an abandoned basketball court. Next to the basketball court was a flower bed, and Hu Rongrong and the three boys were sitting on the edge of the flower bed. Hu Rongrong seemed fine, but the three boys were trembling with fear, and one of them was even crying.
"What's going on?" Ye Cheng asked.
Hu Rongrong glared at Ye Cheng, puzzled, and said, "When I woke up, I found that Luo Shimin was gone. I saw a note she left saying that she went to have breakfast with Xia Chen, so I went to the restaurant to have breakfast alone. I saw these three people running out of the warehouse area like madmen, screaming as they ran. Out of curiosity, I stopped them and asked them what was wrong. They said they saw Liu Yanting here, so I brought them over and called Luo Shimin."
Xia Chen walked up to the three boys and carefully examined them. The three were clearly terrified; their faces were pale, their bodies trembling, and cold sweat poured down their backs. Xia Chen leaned down and asked, "Did you three see Liu Yanting?"
"She...she...wasn't wearing any clothes..."
"We...we were playing...basketball...and then..."
"In...in...the lake..."
The three boys spoke at the same time, but Xia Chen couldn't understand a word they said.
"Stop!" Luo Shimin shouted, and the three boys shut their mouths at the same time. "One at a time. If there are any omissions or mistakes, the others can fill in the gaps." Luo Shimin pointed to a boy who seemed a little braver and said, "You go first. The other two listen carefully."
The boy pointed at by Luo Shimin swallowed twice, thought for a moment, and said, "The three of us are in the same dormitory and class. We didn't have class this morning, so we wanted to play basketball. When we got to the basketball court, all the courts were full. I remembered that there was another basketball court in the warehouse area that is usually not crowded, so I brought the two of them here."
Sure enough, no one was there. The three of us played for a while and then got tired, so we sat down to rest. Just then, we heard the sound of water. I remembered there was a small river not far from the court, and the water was very clear, so I led the other two over. In the distance, we saw a girl swimming in the river. She had a great figure and looked alright, and most importantly, she wasn't wearing any clothes. The three of us wanted to get closer, so we cautiously approached. When we reached the riverbank, the girl was facing away from us. I suddenly realized that she was incredibly pale, almost inhumanly so. I was suddenly terrified, though I didn't even know what I was afraid of. The girl in the water slowly turned around. Her eyes were closed, and I felt she looked familiar. Suddenly, I remembered—she was Liu Yanting, the girl rumored to have been bitten to death by a vampire last night. I was terrified, and the other two recognized her too. The three of us collapsed to the ground in fear. The girl slowly opened her eyes, and I saw that her eyes were deathly white.
She stood up from the water, naked, and walked towards us step by step. I thought we were doomed and closed my eyes in fear. About five minutes passed, and nothing happened. I saw Liu Yanting turn her back to us and leave. After that, I don't know where she went.
It would have been better if he hadn't listened. After hearing this, Ye Cheng's head spun. He thought he had found a clue and could boast to the bureau chief, but he was surprised to learn that Liu Yanting's body had died on its own. If he told the bureau chief this, the bureau chief would definitely personally put him in the car to go to the mental hospital.
Another boy said, "He's mostly right, but there's one thing wrong. Liu Yanting isn't swimming; she's just floating on the surface, occasionally wiggling her arms or legs. I feel like she's sleeping."
"Sleep?" Ye Cheng was a bit speechless. He could barely accept that a corpse could move, but he couldn't accept that a corpse needed to sleep. Following this line of thought, did a corpse also need to eat and go to the toilet? Would it still be a corpse then? It would be no different from a living person.
The third boy said, "By the way, I smelled a peculiar scent as it walked past me."
Li Xiao asked, "Is it a foul smell, the smell of a corpse?"
“No.” The boy shook his head. “It doesn’t smell bad, it smells like blood. Yes, it smells like blood!”
Li Xiao was also a bit bewildered. She had never heard of a corpse emitting a bloody smell instead of a foul odor. She suspected it was a prank by the three boys, but seeing how terrified they looked, it didn't seem fake. In her heart, she cried out, "Heavens above, what on earth is going on?"
Xia Chen remained calm and asked, "Have you noticed any abnormal behavior from Liu Yanting, such as being afraid of sunlight or walking stiffly?"
The three boys thought about it seriously for a moment, then shook their heads. One of the boys said, "Except for her eyes being deathly white, she's no different from a normal person."
Xia Chen asked one last question, "Which way did she go?"
The three boys turned and pointed in the same direction. Xia Chenshun looked in the direction they pointed and saw the staff and family quarters of Yishi Academy. "Alright, we're all set. You three can go now. It's best not to tell anyone else about what happened with Liu Yanting."
The three boys stood up, nodded, and disappeared from sight like a gust of wind; they were truly terrified.
Ye Cheng complained, "First there was the bizarre vampire case, and now there's this moving corpse. My brain is in complete chaos. Is this the end of the world?"
Hu Rongrong had been holding back for a long time, and finally found an opportunity to strike at Ye Cheng, saying, "Your brain is full of nothing but grass. Don't blame others for your own stupidity."
Ye Cheng retorted, "Crazy woman, what did I do to offend you? Why do you dislike me? My brain is full of grass, while yours is full of gold. If you're so capable, solve the case, and then I'll be impressed."
This was the first time Li Xiao had ever seen the two of them argue, and she asked in surprise, "What's wrong with them?"
“You’ll get used to it.” Luo Shimin pulled Li Xiao along as they followed Xia Chen towards the lake. They wanted to see if Liu Yanting, now a moving corpse, had left any traces to prove it was indeed her. Soon, Li Xiao found a trail of barefoot footprints by the riverbank. After testing, she was certain they were Liu Yanting’s. The three followed the footprints to a warehouse, where they disappeared. Xia Chen looked in the direction the footprints went and saw a teachers’ apartment building. Liu Yanting’s teacher, Su Youqing, lived in that building. Xia Chen had a feeling that this matter was connected to Su Youqing, but it was just a feeling; he had no evidence to prove it.
The three returned to the abandoned basketball court, where Ye Cheng and Hu Rongrong were still arguing. Luo Shimin's phone rang again. After hanging up, she said, "My brother is here. He needs to talk to us."
014 Luo Xie's Investigation Results
Upon hearing Luo Shimin say that her brother Luo Xie was coming, they all stopped to listen and asked in unison, "What's your brother coming for?"
Luo Shimin said with a smile, "How did you two become so in sync? You have such great chemistry."
Ye Cheng's expression changed. "Luo Shimin, you can't say things like that, especially not in front of your brother, or I'm finished. I'm so handsome, and I still don't have a girlfriend. You don't want me to die young, do you?"
Luo Shimin chuckled, "My brother said he's coming to deliver some report to us, something related to the case, and told us to wait for him at the restaurant." The thing Luo Xie brought must be very important, so everyone immediately turned and headed towards the restaurant.
Walking down the street, Ye Cheng approached Luo Shimin and asked in a low voice, "What exactly is going on between your brother and Hu Rongrong? Can you tell me?"
Luo Shimin said loudly, "I thought you were going to ask me something, why are you being so mysterious? Is this all it is?" Hu Rongrong turned around and glanced at him. Ye Cheng said urgently, "Keep your voice down."
"Actually, it's nothing," Luo Shimin said. "My brother really likes Rongrong. They dated before, but one day, Rongrong found out that my brother was with his ex-girlfriend and even kissed her, so she broke up with him. My brother explained that the girl had asked him out under the pretense of suicide, and that she had forcibly kissed him, but Rongrong just wouldn't believe him, and that's how things turned out. At first, I felt sorry for them, but not anymore. I think Rongrong has fallen for you."
"You can't just say that." For Ye Cheng, the fact that Hu Rongrong had fallen for him was the most terrifying thing in the world. If he had a choice, he would rather fall in love with a zombie or have sex with a vengeful ghost.
Luo Shimin said seriously, "Rongrong and I grew up together. I probably know her better than she does. She may not realize it now, but she will one day. Don't worry, my brother won't chop you into pieces. At most, he'll disfigure you and break your legs. Then he'll give you some money, and you can live happily with Rongrong."
"I might as well just die." Ye Cheng was on the verge of tears.
"Brother!" Luo Shimin saw Luo Xie from afar and ran over happily.
Ye Cheng looked up and saw Luo Xie standing straight at the restaurant entrance, his entire being like a drawn sword, exuding an invisible aura of power. He was surrounded by girlfriends, but none dared to approach him, including many beauties far more attractive than Hu Rongrong. Luo Xie remained oblivious, gazing at the sky, lost in thought.
Hearing Luo Shimin call him, he turned around and saw Hu Rongrong's lips curl into a wicked smile.
"He's so handsome!" The girls around him all swooned.
Luo Xie's hand was still wrapped in gauze. Luo Shimin took his hand in her hands and asked, "Brother, does it still hurt?"
"It doesn't hurt anymore." Luo Xie put his hands in his pockets. "Let's go inside and talk while we eat."
The restaurant owner was happily counting his money inside when he saw Luo Xie walk in. His expression immediately changed, and he dropped the banknotes all over the floor.
"What important discovery have you made?" Xia Chen asked.
Luo Xie began, "Based on Rongrong's description of the old woman who told her stories, I had Batian help my underlings investigate. The result was that there wasn't an old woman matching Rongrong's description within a hundred miles of Yishi Academy. I thought, since she told Rongrong she lived nearby, and there wasn't such an old woman nearby, there's only one possibility: the old woman was lying. She deliberately waited there to tell Rongrong stories about vampires from fifty years ago. I had my underlings expand the search area, and that's how we found this." Luo Xie took a photo from his folder and placed it in front of Hu Rongrong, asking, "Rongrong, is this the person who told you the stories?"
After carefully examining the photo, Hu Rongrong nodded, "It's her."
Luo Xie took the photo and continued, "The person in the photo is a third-rate actress. She lives in this city. I found her last night. She told me that someone she met online asked her to tell stories to Rongrong for a fee of 10,000 yuan. After that, I checked her account and found that the 10,000 yuan was transferred from a bank near Yishi College. We haven't found out who transferred the money yet."
Li Xiao exclaimed, "You're amazing! You're even more amazing than us police officers!"
"Thank you!" Luo Xie didn't stand on ceremony and continued, "Now let me tell you the story of the vampire. I checked all the women in the city named Xuan Xiaotong and Tian Zi, but I didn't find any who matched the criteria. I unexpectedly discovered that the police station's household registration archives were mysteriously destroyed by a fire thirty years ago, and all the household registration files from before the liberation were burned."
I didn't lose heart. I found the name Xuan Xiaotong in the police station's top-secret files. Her information was as follows: Xuan Xiaotong, female, date of birth unknown. Her father, Xuan Zhanren, was one of the city's earliest national capitalists in the early 20th century, owning four large textile factories and contributing to the city's industrialization. At the peak of his career, he suddenly sold off his assets and moved away with his family, their whereabouts unknown. By the late 1970s, Xuan Xiaotong returned to the city with a large sum of money and established the Xia Group. The Xia Group developed rapidly, becoming a nationwide conglomerate within a few years. The nominal founder of the Xia Group was a man named Xia De, but Xia De never appeared in public, leading to suspicions that he didn't exist.
In recent years, Xuan Xiaotong has gradually retreated behind the scenes, but in reality, the Xia Group is still under her control, and her behavior has become increasingly mysterious. Only a very few members of the Xia family have ever seen Xuan Xiaotong. The police once suspected that Xuan Xiaotong was using the Xia Group to conduct illegal medical research, but they have yet to obtain concrete evidence.
Ye Cheng asked loudly, "Where did you find this information? I've never seen it before."
Luo Xie said, "The level of secrecy surrounding this information is frighteningly high. Not to mention you, even your father, Ye Fanye, probably doesn't know about its existence."
Xia Chen asked, "Then how did you get it?"
"I have my own methods. You just need to know that everything I said is true. The person we encountered in Chenguan Village should be that old witch Xuan Xiaotong."
Luo Shimin did the math and exclaimed, "Judging from the age in the story, Xuan Xiaotong must be almost a hundred years old now. She's so long-lived!"
“My data isn’t finished yet.” Luo Xie took out another spreadsheet. “This shows the fund flows of four banks near Yishi Academy over the past three years. I discovered that huge sums of money are being transferred to Yishi Academy every month in a dispersed manner, but I can’t find this money in Yishi Academy’s accounts. I speculate that this money is most likely used for some large project, but you’ll have to investigate the details yourselves.”
“The Nuwa Project,” Xia Chen said. “This money must be the operating funds for the Nuwa Project.”
Luo Xie then took out two more pieces of paper from a transparent plastic bag. The paper was yellowed and looked quite old. "One of my underlings' fathers was among the first batch of employees at Yishi Academy. He still has his first and second pay slips. You'll find something interesting on the first one."
Xia Chen took the paper and examined it closely. He quickly spotted two names: Duan Gan Xiaosheng and Tian Zi. Looking at the second sheet, he noticed that these two names were missing. Hu Rongrong exclaimed after reading it, "Two people from the story are in our school?"
Luo Xie said, "I've thought about it carefully. What you heard is not a story, but a real event that happened here decades ago. For some unknown reason, all the people involved are still in Yishi Academy."
In the dark room, we saw a specimen of an infant with a hole in its head; it was the body of the deceased Duan Ganxuanbang.
Xia Chen handed the payslip to Ye Cheng and asked, "What do you think about this?"
Ye Cheng said, "If Tian Zi and Duan Gan Xiaosheng were still alive, one would be almost a hundred years old and the other over seventy. We could easily find them. Once we've finished dealing with our current matters, we'll find them and get to the bottom of things." Ye Cheng glanced at Luo Xie and said, "You should be a policeman. You're more efficient at investigating cases than the police."
"I have a question I've been wanting to ask you: you weren't responsible for the bombing at the Xia Group last night?"
"It has nothing to do with me, but it inadvertently helped me out," Luo Xie laughed. "This morning, as soon as the stock market opened, Xia Group's stock was bound to plummet. I was preparing to aggressively acquire Xia Group's shares, which saved me a lot of money. When I hold 20% of Xia Group's shares, I will become Xia Group's largest shareholder. This is just the beginning. Soon I will acquire the shares held by the other major shareholders, and I will eventually become the master of Xia Group. The Xia family will be kicked out of Xia Group. What a wonderful irony it would be if Xia Group didn't have the Xia family." Luo Xie revealed his plan without any reservations, because none of the people in front of him could affect the implementation of his plan.
Ye Cheng analyzed, "Although the Xia Group suffered a severe blow in this city, it did not damage its foundation. In the short term, last night's bombing will cause fluctuations in the Xia Group's stock, but it will recover in a short time. Small shareholders may sell their shares, but the major shareholders are smart people, and they certainly will not sell their shares to you."
“You’re right, your analysis makes a lot of sense.” Luo Xie actually agreed with Ye Cheng. “I’ve thought of the problem you mentioned. The major shareholders certainly won’t sell their shares to me easily. But don’t forget who I am. After my underlings visit them, they will definitely sell their shares to me.”
Ye Cheng choked on his own saliva. Everyone knew what Luo Xie meant by "visit." "I'm a policeman. Can you please not say these things in front of me?"
Luo Xie smiled and said, "Sorry, I forgot you're a police officer."
Ye Cheng was speechless.
Luo Shimin smiled as well. She turned her gaze to Li Xiao, another policeman present, and noticed that Li Xiao looked unwell. She asked with concern, "Are you alright?"
