Ghosts in Medical School Horror Files - Chapter 15
Following Mr. X's hints, Ye Cheng deduced, "Was it murder to cover it up? Who did it?"
The man nodded approvingly, "Quick-witted, a talent for solving cases. The murderer is a member of the 'Nuwa Project'."
“
"Was it to preserve the 'Nuwa Project'? What exactly is the 'Nuwa Project'? How many people in the academy are involved in this project?"
The woman remained silent. Ye Cheng couldn't immediately tell whether she knew but was choosing not to speak, or whether he himself didn't know. He could only ask the next question, "Is all of this related to the Xia Group?"
The gentleman fell silent again. Ye Cheng was speechless. Mr. X also didn't speak, his gaze sweeping over everyone before stopping on Xia Chen, as if he wanted to express something.
After about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, no one spoke. Mr. X stood up and said, "If you have no other questions, I'll be leaving. If possible, I'd like to take these two little guys with me."
Ye Cheng immediately said, "No, the intestinal worms are the key to this case. How can we hand them over to such a mysterious person as you? What if you use the intestinal worms to continue harming people? It's better to hand them over to us police." Xia Chen also said, "We can't distinguish between friend and foe. How can we hand over the intestinal worms to you?" Su Youqing said angrily, "They killed my husband. We can't let them get away with this."
The man reached for the intestinal worms with his right hand, and they crawled up his hand and onto his right arm. “Giving them to you is fine, but officer, how are you going to explain them to your colleagues? They’re key suspects in this case. Will your colleagues believe you? And what will you do with them afterward? Hand them over to research institutions? One of them is your friend.” Ye Cheng was speechless. Mr. X then turned to Xia Chen, “I’m willing to sit down and talk to you, so I’m definitely a friend, not an enemy. I’ll tell you my identity at the appropriate time. As for killing your husband, he was wrong, but if it weren’t for him, he wouldn’t be in this inhuman state now. It was your husband who reported the affair between Dr. Zuo and Qi Xiaoke to his superiors, indirectly leading to this tragedy.”
“
Su Youqing lowered her head and stopped speaking.
The man clapped his hands. "The case of intestinal worms is now closed. I guarantee that no one will die from intestinal worms again. If no one has any questions, I'll be leaving now."
Hu Rongrong said anxiously, "Please don't leave yet, I have another question. What are you planning to do with them?"
“These are two adorable little guys.” Mr. X teased the intestinal worms a couple of times with his hand. “I plan to send them back to the northern desert. They came from there, and the northern desert is their home.”
Hu Rongrong felt relieved. Mr. X glanced at the time and said, "It's almost been an hour, I have to go now. We'll meet again, I promise."
"Don't go!" Ye Cheng was furious. He watched helplessly as Mr. X swaggered away from him.
A few minutes later, everyone gradually regained consciousness. Ye Cheng, knowing it was impossible, was still unwilling to give up and rushed outside to search for Mr. X. After Xia Chen and the others recovered, they silently cleaned the room. The intestinal worm case was over just like that; no one expected it to end like this. Mr. X, who appeared out of nowhere, disrupted all their plans.
"Ouch!" Director Wang, who had been lying on the ground, slowly woke up, rubbing his head as he sat up. He noticed the bug was gone and asked, "Where's the bug? Where did it go?"
Only Xia Chen answered, "The insects disappeared, disappeared forever."
Director Wang pressed further, "How could it disappear? Did it run away?"
No one answered.
Director Wang was somewhat disappointed and went home, clutching his head. Ye Cheng returned quickly, and as everyone had expected, Mr. X had left no clues.
Three days later.
No murders occurred at the school, and the intestinal worms really did disappear; no one except Mr. X knew where they were. Xia Chen and Luo Shimin sat chatting in a pavilion in a corner of the school.
"These past few days have been so amazing, I never dreamed I would encounter something like this."
Xia Chen nodded and continued writing something in a black notebook.
"What are you writing?" Luo Shimin wanted to see, but Xia Chen covered it up.
"It's a secret. You'll have nightmares if you read this for the rest of your life." Xia Chen put away the notebook.
Volume Two: Blood Circulation
sequence
A small river flows through Yishi College. The water is crystal clear, and fish and shrimp roam in the river. The banks of the river are lush with vegetation, with willows swaying in the breeze, creating a tranquil environment.
Standing by the river, the surface is like a mirror, reflecting the blue sky and white clouds. A gentle breeze carries the slightly damp air, making it a perfect place for romance. Students at Yishi College have named this river "Lovers' River," and half of the couples on campus started their relationships here.
Today, Xiao Guo revisited the same place and walked alone along the Lover's River, feeling extremely down. Just half an hour earlier, his girlfriend, Xiao Yu, had broken up with him. The reason was simple and cliché: she had fallen for another guy.
"Am I really that unattractive?" Xiao Guo stopped in her tracks.
That's where he met Xiaoyu. It was an evening after dinner. He was taking a walk alone by the lake when Xiaoyu sat by the river, sketching in her sketchbook. The setting sun cast a golden glow on her face, making her look like a goddess. Xiao Guo couldn't help but walk over. Xiaoyu was beautiful, and her paintings were beautiful too. That's how they met.
"Why am I thinking about these things again?" Xiao Guo shook his head vigorously, trying to clear his mind of what he had just been thinking about. He suddenly realized something, "Why is it so quiet!" The Lover's River was eerily quiet, as quiet as a vast graveyard. There were no insects chirping, no birds singing, and no frogs croaking; it was as if he had suddenly entered a vacuum.
The humid air carried a faint, unpleasant odor.
Xiao Guo took a few steps forward. The river flowed quietly, but there were no fish, no shrimp, and no other creatures in it. He muttered to himself, "Could it have been all fished out? Impossible. How could such a long river be completely emptied?"
Curiosity drove Xiao Guo to walk another ten meters or so. He stopped at a shallow beach and stared wide-eyed at the sight of a white layer of dead bodies, fish, and frogs, some of which were already rotting. A strong stench filled Xiao Guo's nostrils, almost making him vomit.
Squeak! Xiao Guo heard a terrifying sound, a sound that pierced his brain. He shuddered. The sound was like someone scratching at glass with their fingernails, or like a frog being trampled to death. Either way, he knew he had to get out of there as soon as possible.
After taking a few steps, Xiao Guo stopped. The air was thick with the smell of blood, and he sensed someone watching him. A nameless fear gripped him, as if an invisible hand was squeezing his heart. He looked around, but saw no one. "Who's there! Come out! I see you!"
Nobody's here!
His eyes inadvertently swept across the river, and he noticed a blood-red stain that had appeared in the water at some point. The river water rushing down from upstream couldn't wash it away.
Xiao Guo squatted down and reached out to touch the blood-red stain. The instant his fingers touched the water, a chilling sensation traveled up his hand and across his entire arm. Xiao Guo quickly pulled his fingers back; they were pale and bloodless!
Just as Xiao Guo raised his leg to run away, the motionless mass of blood stirred, and something floated to the surface.
Xiao Guo glanced back and saw a pair of blood-red eyes staring coldly at him, exuding a sinister and evil aura.
Xiao Guo suddenly felt dizzy and fainted.
001 Blood Cloud
Chenguan Village is located in the northwest corner of the city, at the junction of urban and rural areas, and is only a kilometer away from Yishi College. A small river flowing through Yishi College runs through the village, dividing Chenguan Village in two. The villagers here do not farm, but make a living by supplying chickens, ducks, fish, meat, eggs and milk to the city. Almost every family has a livestock farm, with some having hundreds of cattle and sheep, and others having thousands of hens, or several acres of fish ponds and orchards. They live a prosperous and stable life.
The sun was setting, its afterglow bathing the earth in gold, gilding the entire world. The clouds on the horizon were golden, the rivers flowed golden, and even the people seemed golden. Most of the villagers stopped what they were doing, gazing up at the sky; such a beautiful sight was a rare sight.
A cloud drifted across the sky, blocking the sun. Sunlight shone through the cloud, turning it golden, like a flowing flame. Li Youcai stood at his doorstep, looking at the sky. His right eyelid twitched three times in a row; this was the fourth time his right eyelid had twitched that day.
There's a saying in the village: a twitching left eyelid means good fortune, while a twitching right eyelid means misfortune.
Li Youcai's wife, Chen Lian, came out of the house. "What beautiful sunset clouds! I haven't seen them in years."
Li Youcai glanced at Chen Lian. Bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun, Chen Lian was surrounded by a hazy golden glow, looking incredibly beautiful. Li Youcai couldn't help but look at her a few more times. Noticing Li Youcai staring at her, Chen Lian said somewhat shyly, "What are you looking at?"
Li Youcai chuckled, "I'm admiring my wife. You're so beautiful."
Chen Lian spat, "You've been watching this for almost twenty years, haven't you had enough yet? You're almost an old woman, what's so interesting about this?"
“In my eyes, you will always be the most beautiful.” Li Youcai put his arm around Chen Lian’s slightly plump and thickened waist. “Wife, my right eyelid is twitching again. This is the fourth time today. I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen.”
Chen Lian laughed, "When did you become so superstitious? You used to disbelieve in these things."
“I used to be young, but now I’m old, almost an old man,” Li Youcai thought for a moment and then said, “Today, when I entered our chicken coop, I had a creepy feeling. The chickens seemed frightened too, laying only a dozen or so eggs all day, which is very abnormal. Do you think something might happen to our chicken coop?”
"Pah, pah, pah, you jinx, what nonsense are you spouting? Our chicken coop is at the edge of the village. You must have forgotten to close the door, and some stray cats and dogs ran in to steal chickens, scaring the hens so much that they stopped laying eggs."
“I closed the gate, I really closed it. I even counted them, not a single chicken is missing, and I checked the chicken coop carefully, I didn’t find any stray cats or dogs.”
"You look so nervous. If there's nothing wrong, then nothing will happen. I think the chicken loss last time has left you with some psychological issues. How about I take you to the city tomorrow to see a psychologist?"
“They call themselves psychologists, they’re uneducated. Old woman, I’m telling you the truth, I’ve been feeling uneasy, I feel like something really bad is going to happen, something really bad.”
“What serious thing could happen to our family? If you’re worried, I’ll go with you for a walk around the chicken coop after dinner, then you’ll feel at ease, okay?”
Li Youcai nodded repeatedly, "Okay, okay."
At this moment, half of the setting sun had fallen below the horizon, and the light had dimmed considerably. The clouds blocking the sun had changed from golden yellow to pale yellow, and then darkened further, becoming somewhat blood red, an eerie red that looked like a large pool of blood from afar.
"It's over, it's over!" an old voice cried out in the village. "Something terrible has happened! A blood cloud has appeared, a demon is sure to appear! A great calamity is coming to the village, a bloody disaster!" The old man who shouted was called Old Man Chen by the villagers. He wasn't very capable, a lonely man who used to earn a little money by telling fortunes. A few years ago, he was in a car accident and broke his leg, becoming lame and unable to support himself. Since then, he has relied on the villagers' charity; if someone cooked an extra bite, they would give it to him. During festivals, he would have wine and meat, and his life was alright. Old Man Chen called himself a half-immortal, often boasting that he could know the past and the future a hundred years in advance, a hundred years less than Liu Bowen, the half-immortal of the Ming Dynasty, hence the name. Before, the villagers were skeptical of his words, but after his car accident, they completely stopped believing him. How could he accurately predict others' fortunes if he couldn't even predict his own?
Old Chen was still shouting with all his might, "Villagers, listen up! Do not go out tonight, or disaster will befall you. Fellow villagers, please heed my advice: the blood cloud is an ominous sign, and a disaster will indeed occur. No matter what happens, do not go out."
Old Chen's words finally angered the villagers. Aunt Wu, who lived next door to Li Youcai, came out and cursed, "Old Chen, you heartless bastard! We villagers have raised you for nothing! Aren't you just cursing us with bad luck and bloodshed? Do you think our Chenguanzhuang has bad feng shui or what we owed you in our past lives? How did we end up with such an old bastard like you?"
Aunt Wu was known for her fierceness in the village, and no one was afraid of her. Old Man Chen was like a mouse seeing a cat when he saw her. Even so, Old Man Chen lowered his voice and said, "There really is going to be a bloody disaster. I'm not making this up. It's written in ancient books: 'A blood cloud is a great omen of misfortune. Seeing it means there will be a bloody disaster.'"
Aunt Wu opened the door and walked into the street. "You old hag, are you never going to stop? If you say another word, I'll beat you, you believe me? You can't even read words the size of a washbasin, yet you talk about ancient books. If I beat you so badly that even your own mother wouldn't recognize you, you believe me?"
Chen Lian pulled Li Youcai toward the gate. Li Youcai asked, "It's almost time to eat, where are we going?"
"Watch Aunt Wu beat Old Man Chen." Chen Lian looked excited. She especially liked watching the excitement, "Our village hasn't been so lively for a long time.
You even love watching dogs fight.
Li Youcai dragged Chen Lian back, saying, "Hurry up and get ready to eat; we still need to go to the chicken coop afterward."
Chen Lian pleaded, "Just for a little while, just for a little while, five minutes at most."
Li Youcai had no choice but to say, "Then go ahead. There's definitely no chance of a fight. Old Man Chen would be blown away by a gust of wind, and Aunt Wu wouldn't be able to bring herself to do it. You're probably going to be disappointed."
"That's hard to say. Haven't you heard the saying, 'The most poisonous heart is a woman's'?" Chen Lian said the last word before she was already outside the door.
Regardless of whether Chen Lian could hear him or not, she still instructed, "Be careful not to fall."
After Chen Lian left, the house became very quiet. Li Youcai stood at the door, looking up at the sky. His right eyelid twitched again, the fifth time today. The sun was barely visible above the horizon, and the blood-red clouds hadn't dissipated. On the contrary, because the light had dimmed, the blood-red clouds appeared even redder, as if they were about to drip. "The appearance of blood-red clouds signifies a great calamity." Old Chen's words echoed in Li Youcai's ears again. Remembering that his right eyelid had twitched four times, his unease intensified. He suddenly felt a fear of the unknown, a strange feeling. He was usually very brave; he had never felt fear since he was old. Perhaps it was old age, or perhaps something really was going to happen tonight. He was afraid—a fear he had never felt before, even making his body tremble slightly. He began rummaging through the clutter in the storeroom. He needed a weapon, a weapon for self-defense.
"What are you looking for?" Chen Lian returned, somewhat disappointed. Li Youcai was right; Aunt Wu and Old Man Chen didn't fight. Old Man Chen was timid and afraid of trouble, and even if Aunt Wu was ruthless, she couldn't bring herself to hurt an old man. When she went out, Old Man Chen was walking home. Aunt Wu stood at the door for less than a minute before going back inside.
Li Youcai found a rusty woodcutter's knife, swung it around, and found it very awkward to handle. "I'm looking for something to defend myself. Just now, my eyelid twitched for the fifth time. Something bad is definitely going to happen tonight."
Chen Lian laughed, "You haven't chopped wood for over ten years, and this knife has been rusted for over ten years. You plan to use it to chop wood again?"
Li Youcai remained silent, continuing to search for a weapon for self-defense in the pile of debris. Chen Lian teased again, "Your eyelids keep twitching like this. I don't think it's a sign of impending disaster, but rather that there's something wrong with your eyelids. Why don't I take you to the village clinic after dinner? If you're sick, you should get treatment as soon as possible."
"I'm not sick, but I'm sure something big is going to happen tonight."
"Having something to protect myself makes me feel more at ease," Li Youcai finally found something in the pile of junk that could still be considered a weapon: a bow and arrow he had used for hunting a long time ago. Apart from the arrowhead being a little rusty, everything else was fine.
Chen Lian laughed again, "How come you've become like Old Man Chen, able to foresee the future? Your skills are a bit lacking. Old Man Chen could see a hundred years into the future, but you can only see what happens tonight?"
"I'm not kidding you. Hurry up and get the food ready. We're going to the chicken coop after we eat." Li Youcai found a whetstone and started sharpening arrowheads in the yard.
Chen Lian noticed how serious Li Youcai looked. It had been many years since she had seen him so focused. The passage of time had taken away not only their youth, but also their passion, seriousness, courage, and many other things.
Many, many years ago, when they were young, she went hunting in the mountains with Li Youcai, using this very bow and arrow. Although he is old now, the way he draws the bow is still as handsome as when he was young.
Li Youcai remained silent during the meal, creating a somewhat oppressive atmosphere. He focused solely on his food, quickly finishing a bowl of rice. He then handed the bowl to Chen Lian, saying, "Give me another bowl; I want more."
As Chen Lian served the rice, she said, "When you were young, you could eat three bowls of rice in one meal, but these days you only eat one bowl. Why do you want another bowl tonight?"
Li Youcai said, "Something might happen at night, so I need to eat well to have the energy."
"Don't keep saying something will happen tonight. It's making me think something will happen tonight." Chen Lian said angrily. "You've heard the story of the boy who cried wolf, right? Nothing was going to happen tonight, but you've said it so many times that something really is going to happen tonight. Don't scare yourself."
Li Youcai insisted on his point of view, "Something is really going to happen tonight, my premonition is getting stronger and stronger."
