Increíble - Capítulo 40

Capítulo 40

"Sometimes I really feel that there are many mysteries surrounding you that I can't solve."

"What?" I felt completely exhausted; the time outside the operating room was the hardest to endure.

"You seem poor and out of touch with the world, yet you are carefree and undisturbed. While ordinary people worry about money, you can easily solve problems."

I gave a bleak smile: "I'm just an ordinary country girl."

Then I saw her again.

Xiao Yuan.

She floated out of the operating room and drifted back and forth in the corridor like a withered leaf blown by the wind.

I stared intently at her, but she just chuckled at me.

"What are you laughing at?" I asked her.

"Huh?" Mo Yan stared at me blankly, "You're asking me?"

Of course I didn't ask him.

The female ghost laughed horribly, her pale face peeling off in patches like plaster falling off a wall: "She's lost too much blood, she probably won't survive."

"You're talking nonsense!" I exclaimed, getting agitated.

Mo Yan stared at me blankly, somewhat frightened.

I waved my hand at him, annoyed, and said, "I wasn't talking to you."

She laughed strangely, her voice shrill, and drifted to the operating room door before disappearing again.

I was puzzled. Hadn't the ghosts stopped daring to approach me ever since I started wearing the prayer beads? How come they've reappeared now? I looked down at my wrist—oh no! Something terrible had happened! My wrist was empty; the prayer beads… were gone?

Mo Yan was terrified: "Lan, are you out of your mind?"

I lowered my head helplessly: "You can just assume I'm mentally unstable."

"But what did you just say? Your brows were furrowed so tightly, you seemed to be in a lot of pain."

At that moment, I was in no mood to explain anything to him. I clasped my hands together and silently prayed: Apple! As long as you're safe and sound, I'll never let you drink again. You must pull through!

Mo Yan was still muttering to himself; I couldn't tell if he was nervous or worried about me.

"You also need to be careful. Pay extra attention to your left and right when you're walking. Both of you need to be careful."

"It seems... she's been being watched for a while now."

"I'll find you a small knife for self-defense later. You'd better carry it with you just in case..."

I couldn't hear a word he was saying; I was only staring at the silent red light on the wall. That thing that symbolized a red heartbeat was actually flashing.

What's going on? I quickly asked Mo Yan, "Look! Isn't that red light on the wall flashing?"

He looked back at the indicator light, then at me, puzzled: "No! That light is perfectly fine, it didn't flicker at all."

But I just saw it flashing.

Could it be... that ghost entered the operating room and is causing trouble? My heart was in my throat, and at that moment, it seemed that there was no other way but to pray.

The red light went out, the operating room door opened a crack, and I rushed over to ask the surgeon, "How is my friend's injury?"

The doctor took off his large mask and said, "The surgery was quite successful. The incision wasn't deep. Luckily, it's late autumn now, and we're wearing thick clothes. If we had suffered this incision in the summer, it would have been really dangerous."

I let out a long sigh of relief. I really didn't know what Xiao Yuan's intentions were in lying to me.

Even ghosts can play pranks?

I also noticed that Mo Yan kept looking at me with a strange expression.

I told him, "You go back first! I need to stay with Apple." I followed the stretcher into the ward, where only one person was allowed to stay in the nursery. He didn't leave; he lay down on a bench outside the ward and said to me, "Call me if you need anything! Call me if you need anything to eat or drink, I'll run errands for you."

I finally couldn't help but say to him, "Don't be so nice to me! We're just friends."

“I know you have a boyfriend.” He smiled at me. “I could tell from your phone call that you have someone supporting you financially. But I’m still glad that I was the first person you thought of after Apple’s incident tonight.” He added, “Why didn’t you think of calling Jeep? Apple is his girlfriend!”

“No, not anymore!” I clenched my fists tightly. “If he were standing here right now, I might kill him.”

He was horrified: "This doesn't sound like you! What happened?"

"Don't ask anymore. I despise him!" Yes! I despise him from the bottom of my heart! The Jeep that used to promise me it would treat Apple well is dead, completely gone.

I was sitting inside, while Mo Yan was lying on a bench in the corridor.

It was a bit chilly in the middle of the night. I tightened my sleeves, my mind wide awake and not a trace of sleepiness in my head.

Looking closely at Apple's face, I suddenly noticed that her facial features were gradually changing, resembling Xiao Yuan's. I was startled. I rubbed my eyes and looked again; yes, it was Apple. The pale face lying on the white sheets was indeed Apple. I breathed a sigh of relief, took her hand, and fell asleep on the edge of the bed.

I felt the bed moving in the middle of the night. Someone sat up, stiff as a statue, staring blankly at me. I opened my eyes, incredulous: "You just had stitches in your stomach, how can you sit up? Are you crazy?"

"ah--"

incredible.

I almost jumped away from the edge of the bed.

But she held my hand tightly.

Xiao Yuan caught him.

Why is Xiao Yuan the one in bed?

I couldn't believe it; my heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of my chest.

"Why is it you? Where's Apple?"

She was still in a daze, her blank gaze unfocused, as if shrouded in mist.

"Xiao Yuan, you're awake?" The door opened, and someone walked in.

I turned around and was startled; this time, I really jumped off the edge of the bed. A boy rushed to the bedside and grabbed her hand. That boy was Ouyang, Xiaoyuan's lover.

"Why are you up? Lie down and go to sleep." He helped her lie down, picked up the thermos, and went outside.

I stared at all of this in astonishment.

There were people arguing in the hallway, one male voice and one female voice.

I approached the doorway quietly and stopped.

"You said you wouldn't see that bitch again, so why are you seeing her again? Are you taking my words for granted?" A woman's voice, hoarse and low, was frightening.

"I'll just take a quick look and leave right away," Ouyang said, his voice filled with impatience and helplessness.

"What do you mean, just take a look and leave? What's that in your hand? A thermos! Do you expect me to stay here and take care of her excrement?"

“She committed suicide for me, I can’t just do nothing, or I’ll feel terrible.”

"Feeling bad? Then I'll cut my wrist in front of you and see how you feel."

The two were arguing, their voices fading into the distance. I peeked out of the ward and saw Ouyang being dragged away by the girl, who was holding one of his arms. He glanced back at the ward, his expression complex and helpless. His departure was hesitant and indecisive.

I looked back at the hospital bed, where Xiao Yuan, who was lying on it, had two lines of clear tears streaming down her face.

Not long after.

The girl with the hoarse voice came again, this time alone.

She stood in front of Xiao Yuan, her wide skirt trailing on the ground, covering her ankles. I couldn't see her face, only her back. Her straight, brown hair clashed jarringly with the asphalt-colored dress, creating a sense of oppression.

She didn't speak, but simply raised her right hand and injected something into the IV tubing—a bluish-green liquid with a greenish sheen. This green was repulsive; it reminded me of the fluorescent green on the heads of flies, and a feeling of nausea welled up inside me.

She left silently, tucking the syringe into her sleeve and walking away.

Xiao Yuan's face grew paler and paler. The doctor came and went several times; it seemed like dawn broke, then darkness fell again, then dawn broke again. After who knows how many days had passed, Xiao Yuan began to roll around in bed, her cries of agony filling the air.

The nurse rushed in, grabbed Xiao Yuan, and shouted, "Quickly, give her a sedative!"

After the noise subsided, a male doctor in a white coat coldly said, "Send him to a mental hospital!"

Has Xiao Yuan gone mad?!

I stared in disbelief. The images I saw were like black and white film reels; I could only look, but not get close. I watched as Xiao Yuan was taken away; her eyes were vacant, and a sticky liquid kept flowing from the corner of her mouth.

Have they really gone mad?

She had only attempted suicide by cutting her wrists, and since she was saved, she should have recovered gradually. But this phenomenon? I suddenly remembered that the woman in the asphalt-colored dress had injected her with something.

Poisoning?

My heart was suddenly shaken. Mingyang was almost poisoned a while ago. How could I see the ugly side of humanity again, that people would not hesitate to harm others for their own selfish desires?

Strange. Her eyes were already vacant, yet cold tears still streamed down her face. Slowly, those tears turned red, viscous, a glaringly bright red…

My heart clenched suddenly.

I woke up.

Was I dreaming?

Looking at the bedside table, Apple was already fast asleep.

But I dared not sleep anymore.

I could always hear mournful cries, sometimes near, sometimes far. There was something strange about the hospital. A chill ran down my spine. I knocked on the glass window and called Mo Yan in.

"Didn't the head nurse say that only one person can go in at a time?"

"The nurses on duty are all asleep, no one will see." I suddenly felt very cold, my heart trembling. I longed for something to be there to bolster my courage. That chill was ever-present, as if something invisible was lurking on my back...

He came in, unsure of what to do with his hands, rubbing them back and forth in his jeans pockets.

"Sit down!" I pulled up a stool for him. "I'm a little scared."

"It's all in your head. Let me chat with you, okay?" He smiled kindly.

"Mo Yan, you and I are different people." What I see, you cannot see. But I cannot say this.

“Indeed, when I first saw you, I felt that you were a fairy who did not eat the food of this world. Your eyes have an incredible power. I felt that I had seen the brightest star in the sky from the land. Even when you are standing in front of me, I still feel that you are very far away from me, so far away that you seem to be untouched by the mortal world.”

"You'll be a very good friend." That's all I can say.

"Thank you!" he smiled shyly, "but unfortunately this is not what I expected."

"What?"
