Reply [145]: The Haunted House Search for Mother - Part 1

The last rays of the setting sun disappeared into the vast earth. This old suburban house, too, was no exception, sinking into darkness.

Hua Ling's family has had a tough time; they just moved here today. Furniture arrived early this morning, and they've been busy all day, but haven't finished unpacking. It was only then that they discovered the house had been without electricity for a long time. The house is huge; it was built before liberation by a wealthy family—it was a villa! But it couldn't withstand the ravages of time, and today, its rent is the cheapest in the city.

Hua Ling works as a waitress at a restaurant. She has parents and a younger sister in high school. Her parents are elderly and unable to work, so the entire burden of supporting the family falls on Hua Ling's shoulders. The little money she earns each month as a waitress is barely enough to feed the family; how can she afford anything else?

Having no other choice, we had to find another place to stay. A few days ago, I stumbled upon an advertisement for this old house for rent. Not only was the price cheap, but it was also quite spacious with many rooms. A family of four could have one room each with room to spare.

It was just a power outage. Hua Ling's father lit candles all over the house: "Let's make do for one night. At least we have a decent place to stay!"

That's true! Aside from being a bit old, this house is quite nice.

"Sister! I feel like something's not right!" said Hua Qingqing, the younger sister, as she looked around the room.

"Of course something's wrong. The power and water are out, and we're the only family around here in the suburbs, several kilometers away. It's enough to make things difficult. Who told you your older sister to be so useless and unable to earn money..."

Hua Ling poured out her grievances incessantly. In order to support her family, this was the only way she could vent her distress.

"No! I just feel this house is creepy..." Hua Qingqing said cautiously.

"Pah, pah, pah! Children say the darndest things, children say the darndest things, good luck, good luck."

The mother, a middle-aged woman who had been working silently, scolded Hua Qingqing with superstitious fervor, putting down her work. While reprimanding her youngest daughter, she clasped her hands together and bowed in all directions: "The child is ignorant, please don't blame her! Amitabha, Amitabha..."

"Oh dear! Mom! What era are we living in? Look at how superstitious you are! If a stranger came, you would scare them half to death!" Hua Ling disliked her mother's superstition.

"Stop talking nonsense! You can't offend ghosts and gods. Come on, come on, you should also pray, lest something really goes wrong!" The mother insisted on her own opinion and wanted Hua Ling and Hua Qingqing to pray as well. Hua Qingqing refused, ran off to find a candle, and went to her chosen room to do her homework.

The mother sighed, shook her head slightly, bowed in prayer a few times, uttered a few "Amitabha," and then began tidying up the furniture, placing it in its proper place. Hualing and her father did the same...

It was night! The night was very deep. There was no moon tonight. The wind was strong outside. The late autumn weather was cold, and it also shrouded the house in darkness and mystery, making people feel uneasy, hesitant, and panicked!

After a busy night, Hua Ling's family had all gone to their rooms to rest. The few candles in the living room had also given their all, shedding their last tear before being extinguished unwillingly.

Heavy! Dark and heavy. Silent! Dead silent.

This was destined to be a night of terror.

Horror

"Thump! Thump! Thump!"

Suddenly, there was a knocking sound at the door, a persistent knocking. Who could it be? In the middle of the night? What is it?

"Coming, coming, stop knocking, it's so noisy!" Hua Ling reluctantly asked for leave from sleep, put on an overcoat, and opened the door.

The door opened, and standing in the doorway was a strange woman whom Hua Ling had never seen before. She was similar in height and appearance to Hua Ling, but perhaps due to the cold weather and strong wind, her hair was a little messy, and her eyes were blank and lifeless.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Hua Ling asked her in surprise. The woman didn't answer, her eyes still staring blankly at Hua Ling.

"It's cold outside, please come in and sit down!" Hua Ling said politely.

"Give me back my mother..." the woman said, her voice as cold as a knife.

"What mother? What do you mean? I don't understand!" Hua Ling was completely confused.

"This is my home. Please leave and give me back my mother..." the woman said coldly.

"You're insane!" Hua Ling turned her head away, wanting to close the door. To her, this woman was mentally unstable.

"Ling! What's wrong?" Hua Ling's father was also woken up and came out of the room to talk to Hua Ling.

"This woman is crazy, she just said..."

Hua Ling's hand, pointing at the woman, suddenly trembled. She didn't know when, but an old man had appeared beside the woman; his build and appearance were strikingly similar to her father's. The woman and the old man said in unison, "Give us back our home! Give us back our mother!"

"Who are you? What's going on?" Hua Ling couldn't help but ask.

With a loud "bang," Hua Ling slammed the door shut, a strong sense of fear washing over her, and she felt inexplicably uneasy.

"Sister! What's wrong?" Her younger sister, Hua Qingqing, also arrived.

Outside the door. "Give our home back to us..."

This time the sound was louder, and it seemed there was another voice, a girl's voice.

Hua Qingqing opened the door………………
