1. The origin of Qingyuan Mountain...
Qingyuan Mountain is a famous mountain in the northern suburbs of Pingcheng.
Its fame doesn't stem from Qingyuan Mountain in Quanzhou. Qingyuan Mountain is known for its numerous springs, its status as a sacred place for spiritual practice, and the flourishing of culture through the collaboration of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Its beautiful scenery also contributed to its widespread fame. This Qingyuan Mountain in Pingcheng, however, is actually named by the chieftain of the mountain village. Its fame comes from Qingfeng Village, which houses a group of people—well, mountain folk—who live peacefully with the people below.
The mountain in Pingcheng wasn't originally called Qingyuan Mountain. Its original name, Jinbei Mountain, wasn't bad at all. However, it also had a common name among the people—Turtle Shell Mountain. The mountain isn't very high, but the path up is quite steep. It gradually flattens out halfway up, and further up, it becomes a flat plain. From a distance, the round mountain looks just like a green-haired turtle carrying a body covered in green trees.
The young and beautiful chieftain of the mountain, a cultured woman, felt that while the character "turtle" was realistic, it didn't suit the free-spirited nature of the villagers or the peaceful atmosphere of the mountain stronghold. So, on her coming-of-age day, she changed the name to "Qingyuan Mountain." This had a reason, as several clear springs cascaded down from the turtle's rear end of the mountain, and the villagers relied on these springs, which the chieftain had renamed Qingyuan, for their livelihood. To keep up with the times and echo the city's harmony policy, the chieftain's title was changed to "Young Lady." Thus, Qingfeng Village became a veritable mansion, unless one occasionally strode down the mountain with a large sword for a dashing stroll.
Three years have passed since Turtle Shell Mountain was renamed, and Qiu Su, the chieftain of Qingfeng Village, is approaching her late twenties. As the saying goes, eighteen is a major hurdle, twenty is considered "leftover." If she's not married by eighteen, she'll only have to wait until she's twenty to be considered "leftover." Although as the chieftain she doesn't lack food or drink, as the representative of Qingfeng Village, the village's reputation is at stake, and the entire village is still very worried. Unfortunately, while there are many men in the village, few are as handsome as Qiu Su. They say good things shouldn't go to outsiders, and it's rare to find such a handsome catch, but ever since He Zhuo, the most handsome and capable young man in the village who grew up with Qiu Su, failed in his marriage proposal, no one has dared to set their sights on the chieftain. The older generation has turned their attention to the area down the mountain.
Zhou Tong, though not yet forty, was one of the older generation and very enthusiastic about Qiu Su's marriage. Right now, he was carrying a sack on his shoulder and holding a large knife in one hand, struggling to climb the only, and steepest, path—Qingfeng Path.
"Hey, what kind of monster are you!" A person wearing a ghost mask and holding a spear suddenly jumped out from behind a large rock beside Qingfeng Road.
Zhou Tong was so frightened that he took a step back, and the sack on his shoulder slammed against the stone wall, from which came a muffled groan.
"You brat, get out of your old man's way!"
The masked man sheathed his spear, pushed the mask up his head, glanced at the sack on his shoulder, leaned closer and whispered, "Son-in-law of the bandit chief?"
Zhou Tong waved and handed over the sack on his shoulder, "Help me carry it for a while, handle it gently. Hey, don't turn it upside down, this one is delicate."
"Um, um, what if the young lady throws the person off the mountain again?"
Zhou Tong pursed his lips. "Not this time. When I went there, people were snatching it, and they were really eager to get their hands on it. That means it's a treasure. If I hadn't been so quick with my knife, I wouldn't have been able to beat them."
Zhou Tong said to a man peeking out from a short distance away, "Digua, come down and keep watch. Ruan Hu, you carry the person back for me, wash him clean, and send him to the young lady's room. Also," Zhou Tong winked, "don't let that brat from Military Advisor He's family see you."
"Got it!" Ruan Hu grinned slyly, slung the sack over his shoulder, and ran off like the wind.
Life on the mountain was rather dull, but fortunately, Qiu Su had a clever mountain lord by her side, and she could occasionally go down the mountain to earn some money. The village was also big enough, and she could take the mountain lord for a walk every day to catch a wild rabbit or something, which was not bad.
The sun was about to set, and Qiu Su stood with her hands behind her back beside the man-made suspended staircase carved into the back mountain, watching the sunset in the west. The sunset was like fire, burning half the mountain pink, and making her face even more rosy. But Qiu Su was missing something. She looked around, pondered for a moment, gathered her strength, and shouted, "Mountain Lord, come home for dinner!"
That shout sent countless wild ducks flying. Normally, the mountain lord would come running over like a prized treasure, carrying a rabbit or a badger, and squat down before her, whimpering for a reward. But today, it wasn't normal. Qiu Su stared at the suspended ladder for ages, but the white thing didn't emerge. Instead, several shy, soft moans came from the nearby bushes. Qiu Su frowned, her eyes blazing with anger as she stared at the rustling bushes. That mountain lord, he's definitely found another lover! Even in spring, he can't be this lenient! She doesn't care if he's out fooling around at night, but he doesn't even spend the day with her!
"Mmm~~Ooh~~"
"Eek~~ Waaah~~"
Qiu Su's lips twitched. She picked up a twig and slowly parted the drooping wild grapevines, instantly revealing a pair of bright blue eyes that didn't belong to the mountain lord. Qiu Su gasped, then with one breath, she pried the grapevines aside. Sure enough…
Sure enough, Qiu Su clicked her tongue in astonishment. Two shameless creatures were engaged in that shameful act. And that wasn't all; the one pressing down on the Mountain Lord had eyes fixed on Qiu Su, even carrying a hint of anger. But that wasn't the point. The point was, why wasn't the usually arrogant Mountain Lord on top?
"What are you so smug about? You're betting on my mountain lord!" Qiu Su glared at him.
The wolf-like creature bared its teeth, revealing several sharp teeth powerful enough to bite through Qiu Su's arm.
"Alright, keep pressing, but hurry up, I'm waiting to take the mountain lord home for dinner." Oh, watching from the sidelines doesn't count as anything, right?
Qiu Su looked at the blue-eyed creature, then plopped down on the opposite rock, waiting to see them communicate through gestures.
Hey, Mountain Lord, you're the master of this mountain, don't be so pathetic! Blue-Eyed is focused on dealing with me, and you're like a spineless shrimp, crawling under his claws, whining and moaning. Aren't you ashamed?
"Mountain Lord, get up! You're making people look down on you!" Qiu Su scolded him with a slightly sour tone.
The mountain lord's black eyes glanced over with a mixture of sorrow and resentment, and it whimpered twice at Qiu Su. The blue-eyed wolf, however, was far less gentle. It pawed down the mountain lord's slightly raised head, bared its teeth at Qiu Su, and howled. Qiu Su's heart skipped a beat as she looked at its bottomless throat. She thought it was indeed inappropriate to observe someone's affair like this, but she couldn't let her mountain lord be subdued for nothing. This wolf was quite impressive, far more imposing than the black wolf in the village. Qiu Su thought for a moment, then pointed at the mountain lord, who was now lying at the blue-eyed wolf's feet, whimpering in shame, and scolded him with a stern look, "Mountain lord… you… cough cough, you can't let him be subdued for nothing. You have to take this wolf cub home."
Blue-eyed Man narrowed his eyes, straightened up slightly to prepare for his attack, and the mountain lord beneath him groaned twice, seemingly in ecstasy and pain.
Qiu Su's face flushed slightly, and she coughed, saying, "Well, hurry home, or you'll be in trouble!" With that, she stretched out her long stick and tossed the grapevine back. Why tossed it back? Are you stupid? The lord of Qingyuan Mountain has been bullied by a scoundrel! If someone sees this, sigh, we can't afford to lose face!
Sigh… Think of that mountain tyrant, the arrogant peacock with her white coat, who never mingled with the village dogs, and didn't even give the lowly underlings a second glance. That tall, powerful, and sleek black dog in the village fawned over her for two whole years—two whole years! Rabbits, pheasants, and roe deer, alive or dead, were piled up at Qiu Su's door for her to feast on, but she remained unmoved. Sigh… After years of running the mountain, she was always the one others bowed to, but unexpectedly, she was subdued by a blue-eyed outsider, and even became utterly submissive. How shameful! Utterly shameful!
Qiu Su brushed aside a strand of hair that had slipped down in the warm spring breeze and murmured, "Spring is here, and its beauty is unstoppable! Even my mountain lord, alas, is about to bloom and bear fruit!"
