twenty three

23. The anxious and indecisive Third Madam Long...

Long San was riding his horse with a carefree and lighthearted air when this question startled him so much that he almost fell off. He had only teased her by asking if there were any problems, but he hadn't expected her to ask such a shocking question.

"What?" he shouted.

"I'm asking you, what do you need..." Feng Ning was really about to ask again when Long San quickly stopped her: "Stop, stop, I just heard you."

"You heard it and you still ask?" Feng Ning glanced at him with displeasure, then continued, "So, is it lacking or not?"

"Still asking?" Long San was furious and embarrassed. "Think about it yourself, is this a question a woman should ask? Can you just ask such a thing? Even though you're not a married woman anymore, you can't be so shameless. Don't you think about what others would think of you if they heard this? This is simply indecent. Even if people in the martial arts world have no taboos, they still can't ask such a question..."

He kept talking nonstop, which annoyed Feng Ning. She interrupted him and said loudly, "How do you know that other people, even those from the martial arts world, don't ask such questions? Have you inquired about it? Have you investigated it? Are you so sure?"

Long San was speechless for a moment before replying, "Why would I need to ask? A normal person wouldn't ask that."

"So I asked, and I'm not normal?" When it comes to being a rogue, Feng Ning is second to none: "I asked my husband a question, what's wrong with that? Of course, it's not normal that my husband doesn't acknowledge me. You didn't ask, and you just assumed that other people wouldn't ask, so you're the one who's abnormal. You think other people wouldn't ask, so you say I'm abnormal, and you're the one who's abnormal."

Feng Ning finished reciting the tongue twister in one breath, then spurred her horse forward, leaving Long San dumbfounded. This crazy woman, she's throwing another tantrum!

For some reason, Feng Ning was quite angry. She sulked and refused to speak to Long San the whole way. Long San was puzzled and couldn't understand what was wrong with this woman. But her behavior made him unhappy. In any case, he was definitely not the one to bow down and flatter her first.

The two arrived at an inn and, without a word but with perfect understanding, handed the horses over to the waiter and led them to the stables in the back to be fed. Feng Ning was actually quite hungry; she rushed into the inn's main hall and sat down, intending to have a hearty meal. But no sooner had Long San entered than she heard someone call out, "Third Master..."

Long San looked and smiled; they were three familiar friends. He went over to greet them one by one. One was a burly man with a thick beard, a young swordsman, and a young woman dressed in a tight-fitting outfit. The three of them looked like wandering knights-errant.

Feng Ning had already sat down when she saw Long San go and sit at someone else's table, which made her feel very aggrieved. She stared at Long San and saw him talking to those people with a gentle gaze and a bright smile. She thought about how he was always gentle and dashing with others, but he always frowned and got angry with her. She couldn't help but feel sad and lowered her head to stare at her fingertips.

The waiter came over and poured tea for Feng Ning, asking, "Miss, what would you like to eat?"

Feng Ning remained silent, her head bowed. She had no money, and someone had promised she wouldn't go hungry, but now they had abandoned her. Seeing her silence, the waiter asked again, "What would you like to eat, young lady?"

Before he could finish speaking, he heard someone say from the side, "She's with me." Feng Ning looked up and saw that it was Long San coming over. Before she could even feel happy, she heard Long San say, "I ran into some friends. Come and sit with me."

Feng Ning looked at the empty table in front of her, then at the two steaming dishes that had just been served to the other person. She swallowed hard and told herself that moving to a different spot for food was not a sign of weakness.

After passing by, the three introduced themselves. They turned out to be three disciples of the Palm Sword Sect. The woman was named Chai Yue, the bearded man was named Peng Rongtao, and the young man was named Liu Hua. Long San had helped the Palm Sword Sect when it was in trouble, which is why they had formed a connection with the sect.

Upon hearing this, Feng Ning smiled slightly, nodded in greeting, and calmly ordered rice. Peng Rongtao laughed heartily and waved his hand, saying, "Right, right, let's not stand on ceremony. Let's eat first."

Upon hearing this, Feng Ning finally smiled and began to eat without any hesitation. Chai Yue suddenly asked, "Third Master, where does this young lady come from?" Long San usually traveled alone, so it was quite rare to see him traveling with a young lady like this.

Feng Ning glanced at Long San while taking a bite of rice. What was wrong with her Long San? How did he attract so many admirers? Everyone who saw her had to ask what she did for a living. But then again, what did it matter to them what she did for a living?

Feng Ning focused on her meal, keeping quiet this time and letting Long San say whatever he wanted. However, she never expected Long San to reply, "Oh, her? She's an assassin my family keeps." He then turned and smiled at her.

Feng Ning, with a mouthful of rice stuck in her mouth, glanced at the three people who had initially been stunned by her words but then began to laugh. She chewed the rice vigorously. Chai Yue, unable to stop laughing, then asked, "Assassins? Third Master needs to bring assassins? May I ask who you intend to kill?"

Long San didn't reply this time. He deliberately smiled and glanced at Feng Ning, his expression ambiguous. Sure enough, Chai Yue's attention immediately shifted to Feng Ning, and her gaze sharpened.

Feng Ning was certain that Long San was retaliating against her. She had only asked a question he didn't like, and he had embarrassed her like this. Feng Ning glanced at Long San, expressionlessly picked up another bite of food, swallowed it, and then calmly turned to Chai Yue and said, "Kill and eat."

After answering, she took a bite of her food and continued killing. The other four people present were stunned, watching Feng Ning's actions, and finally understood. Even Long San couldn't help but laugh this time; how could she have answered that? Wasn't she just admitting she was a glutton? |Compiled by Rou Rou|

Long San truly felt he couldn't have met anyone more interesting than Feng Ning. He smiled and replied, "Yes, your forte really is killing and eating." And it was indeed his pet.

"Hmm." Feng Ning looked at them with a straight face, and then said, "Didn't Third Master praise me for taking on three people at once?" The group burst into laughter again upon hearing this, but Long San looked at Feng Ning, met her eyes, and suddenly couldn't laugh anymore.

Was she actually sad?

After that, Feng Ning didn't participate in their conversation. She didn't know them, and she didn't remember her own experiences. Apart from eating, she really had nothing to say to them. So she ate earnestly, without saying a word, silently filling her stomach until she was full.

As the banquet drew to a close, Long San generously paid the bill, and the three men, seemingly aware of his manners, thanked him readily. The waiter approached to ask if they wanted a meal, and Long San ordered two superior rooms. The three men quickly added that they also stayed there and could help if needed. The group then reminisced about their time fighting the demonic sect, and in their lively conversation, Peng Rongtao even ordered more wine to continue drinking.

Feng Ning felt uneasy sitting there, so she asked a waiter to lead her back to her room. Anyway, Long San wouldn't share a room with her, and outside, he would never acknowledge her as his wife. Besides, with friends around, he would naturally distance himself from her completely. Feng Ning was dejected and quickly went to bed, clutching her blanket.

The bright moon hung high outside the window, and Feng Ning stared at it, thinking about how Long San downstairs had a family and a business, and friends everywhere he went. But what about her? She had nothing. She had been out of her mind today. She had asked Long San if he needed a woman, thinking that if he didn't have someone special, perhaps she could try. After all, they were already a married couple, and she was different now than before. Could they start over and try to get along? If they could get along well and be happy together, she would stay with him. Was that alright?

But she was too embarrassed to ask him directly, and in a moment of impulsiveness, such a silly question popped into her head. Long San looked down on her, his friends looked down on her too; she was just a good-for-nothing, what could she do besides eat?

Feng Ning grew increasingly saddened as she thought about it. Gazing at the moon, she felt an overwhelming sadness, and a sudden chill ran down her face. When she touched it, she found it was tears.

She suddenly jumped up, quickly dressed, and combed her hair. She had already given the box to Long San. If she had made mistakes before, wouldn't she have atoned now? Anyway, they planned to send her back to her parents' home. Although she didn't want to leave, she didn't want to be disliked like this, staying in a place where no one liked her—it was worse than a nightmare. She had hands and feet, and she was skilled in martial arts; she could support and take care of herself.

Feng Ning walked to the door and was about to open it when she thought about it and turned back to the window. She jumped out of the window and onto the roof. She leaped from one roof to another, running gracefully.

Look, she's free and independent, going wherever she wants and doing whatever she wants. Why should she stay there and be disliked? The world is vast; surely there will be a place that likes her.

She had run quite a distance in no time, but then it occurred to her that she couldn't be so foolish. There were horses to ride, why bother running on foot? With that thought, she quickly turned back and ran towards the inn. Not only did she want to ride a horse, but she also wanted to take Long San's horse with her to spite him. Oh, and she'd also sneak into the kitchen and steal some snacks to take with her, so she wouldn't be hungry tomorrow morning.

After she had packed a large bag of food and stuffed it into her arms until her stomach was bulging, she sneaked to the backyard, checked that no one was around, and then quickly ran towards the stable.

The horse shook its head and neighed softly twice. Feng Ning stroked its neck and coaxed it, "Be good, don't yell. I'll take you away and I'll never let you get tired or hungry."

"I don't think I let it get tired or hungry." A gentle male voice rang out, and Feng Ning froze. Turning around, she saw Long San standing in the courtyard looking at her with a helpless expression.

Feng Ning bit her lip, turned her head away and ignored him, stroking the horse's neck, unsure of what to do. After a while, a large hand reached out and stroked the horse along with her; it was Long San standing beside her.

"I'm sorry." Just as Feng Ning was thinking about what to say, Long San spoke first: "I apologize to you."

Feng Ning turned to look at him in surprise. Long San said, "I didn't mean to make fun of you. I was just joking. I'm sorry I upset you." His eyes were gentle and sincere, and Feng Ning felt her heart soften instantly.

"I, I'm not sad at all, I can't be bothered with you all." Feng Ning stubbornly insisted, still wanting to save face.

Long San didn't mean to laugh at this moment, but Feng Ning's pouting face really made him smile: "Yeah, you're not sad, but I'm still sorry." He said in a very cooperative manner.
