Einfacher Congee-Roman - Kapitel 49

Kapitel 49

The scholar hurriedly went to the table to get the carrying pole, and in the short few steps he got the pole, he nervously dropped it several times.

He stood before the bed, suppressing his pounding heart, holding his breath, and with trembling hands slowly lifted the bright red veil—

"Ah! What kind of monster is this?!"

On the bright red wedding bed, there stood a man dressed in a phoenix coronet and wedding robes, his face contorted with bulging veins and his eyebrows twitching and disoriented. The more he looked, the more familiar he seemed... It was none other than Fan Bing, whom Fifth Sister had been searching for all day!

33 When no one is around to catch his wife at midnight

Inside the Minister's residence, Xie Dongfeng, who was enjoying a rare moment of leisure, had just poured himself a cup of wine when he was intercepted.

"Brother-in-law Xiaobai, shouldn't you be at Qingmofang for your wedding?" Has something changed?

Gongye Bai shook his empty wine glass and chuckled, "It's not appropriate to stay long in such a lively setting."

"That's true." Xie Dongfeng pursed his lips, poured himself another cup of wine, and glanced at him a few times out of the corner of his eye, his expression sour. This man had such a sanctimonious appearance, pretending to be elegant. Who would dare to drink loudly and talk loudly next to him? A wedding should have been a joyous occasion, but if he stayed any longer, it might turn into a poetry gathering.

"By the way, where is Granny?" Gongye Bai suddenly asked.

"You accompanied 'Yiren' to the palace banquet, why are you asking this?" Xie Dongfeng asked, somewhat puzzled.

Gongye Bai's eyes flickered slightly as he said, "It's nothing, just a heads-up, I can't beat the Silver Scholar."

After saying that, he picked up the wine pot and quickly leaped several steps away.

Xie Dongfeng was even more bewildered. Before he could ask, a loud crash shook the entire house, and he quickly grabbed the table for support. Without any time to react, he watched helplessly as the decorative door of the hall collapsed, raising a cloud of sand and dust.

Cough, cough, cough! Xie Dongfeng coughed repeatedly, took a few steps back, and bumped into the table.

He covered his nose with one hand and brushed away the dust with the other. Beneath the dust, a crimson figure stood at the doorway, its murderous aura pressing directly against his face.

He squinted, and upon closer inspection, he thought to himself, "Oh no!" He cautiously moved closer to the treacherous Gongye Bai, while casually asking, "Isn't today your wedding day with Manager Fan? Young Master Shu, why are you here so late at night, making such a fuss? Could it be that you've come to ask me for a wedding gift?"

The visitor was none other than the scholar.

He learned from Fan Bing that it was Gongye Bai who had subdued him and silenced him. Connecting this to the fact that his sworn brother had come to find Fan Qingbo with Jie Dongfeng a few days prior, he guessed what had happened. In an instant, jealousy and anger flared, and resentment and murderous intent surged within him. When he regained his senses, he was already at the Minister's residence, and the doors he had stormed through all fell to his bare hands.

He glanced at the wreckage on the ground, bowed slightly, and said, "I am very sorry for the damage. I will compensate you for everything." His words were sincere and humble, but when he raised his head, his eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, his figure became ghostly, and his movements were as swift as lightning. In the blink of an eye, he had already grabbed Xie Dongfeng by the throat. "Hand over my wife!"

Gongye Bai's expression changed, and he reached out to strike the scholar. "Brother-in-law, let's talk this out! Release Lord Jie!"

"Speaking of which, you were involved too." The scholar sneered, meeting him with one hand, each move ruthless and merciless.

Gongye Bai harbored a grudge because he had been framed and forced to sell his body at Huanxitian. He wanted to take this opportunity to teach Jie Dongfeng a lesson, but he never expected that the renowned good-natured gentleman with the silver pen would have such a cold-blooded and violent side. Seeing Jie Dongfeng's face turn purple and he was in great pain, his heart tightened, and he said in a deep voice, "If you want to know where Xiao Fan is, release him!"

The scholar paused upon hearing this.

Gongye Bai secretly breathed a sigh of relief, his expression returning to normal: "The matter of the wedding was not something we intentionally interfered with. It's just that Xiao Fan has other important matters to attend to right now. And this matter concerns her life and her future freedom, so it must be resolved."

The scholar was skeptical, but the blood mist in his eyes gradually dissipated, and he slowly loosened his grip.

Gongye Bai supported Xie Dongfeng, who was about to fall, and massaged his back with his palm to help him regulate his breathing.

The scholar looked at the two of them, his expression unreadable. For the first time, he realized how much he disliked hearing things about her from others that he didn't know. Perhaps he could console himself that he was the last to meet her, but undeniably, she still held too many secrets from him. His hands, hanging by his sides, clenched into fists and then relaxed; finally, he turned his head away, saying nothing more.

The dust kicked up by the previous fight was still rising and falling, but the three of them fell silent.

"Oh my god, what's going on? Was we robbed or is this divine retribution?!"

A woman's voice came from outside the door, gentle in tone, but with a touch of cheerfulness due to its loud volume.

Gongye Bai and Xie Dongfeng exchanged a glance, their expressions differing. Before they could stop him, the owner of the voice was already approaching, muttering to himself. Xie Dongfeng quickly jumped up and went to greet him: "Madam, has the palace banquet ended so early?"

Dressed as Xie Yiren and having taken a voice-changing pill, Fan Qingbo felt uneasy at Dongfeng's unprecedented enthusiasm and frowned, asking in a low voice, "Have you taken the wrong medicine?"

Instead, the nanny reacted first and raised her voice, "Your Excellency, the lady is unwell and fainted just now. The Empress has granted her special permission to leave the banquet early."

Seeing this, Fan Qingbo felt a chill and looked at Xie Dongfeng: "A guest?"

Xie Dongfeng remained noncommittal, embraced her and led her into the house, then subtly stopped her when she saw the people inside and tried to turn away.

This is bad, this is really bad. Her current husband has come to her nominal husband's side! In the 21st century, this would be bigamy; in ancient times, it would be drowning in a pig cage! Fan Qingbo's forehead began to sweat, and realizing there was no way to escape, she quickly made a decision.

She put on a virtuous smile and gave a graceful curtsy to the scholar in the hall: "Young master, are you a guest of the master? This humble servant greets you."

What's going on now? Did he recognize her? Impossible! Her disguise technique has been verified by both the master Nan Wuyao and the Five Poisons Prince! But if he didn't recognize her, why is he staring at her so intently, something he usually avoids looking at? Could it be that the Xie Yiren she disguised herself as was so breathtakingly beautiful that he fell in love at first sight, became infatuated, and forgot all about propriety?

Thinking of the last possibility, she suddenly felt a little uneasy.

Who is this?

The scholar's cool voice pulled her back to reality. He didn't seem to recognize her, and Fan Qingbo breathed a sigh of relief, a mixture of relief and a strange disappointment.

"My wife," Xie Dongfeng answered simply and clearly, then added, "My wife is not feeling well, please excuse me."

He then tried to help Fan Qingbo back to her room.

"Wait a minute."

Fan Qingbo froze, his heart pounding with unease. He heard a deep, husky male voice behind him: "I have one more question to ask."

Xie Dongfeng turned around, only to see that the scholar wasn't asking him anything; his gaze remained fixed on Fan Qingbo. His expression was puzzled. He pursed his lips and said with a bitter tone, "Miss Fan, so the reason you've always refused to marry me is because you're already married?"

The unwavering "Miss Fan" sent a jolt through Fan Qingbo's heart. She whirled around to see the scholar's murderous aura vanish, leaving only a pair of clear eyes shimmering with disbelief and indignation. He stared at her for a long time, taking her shock as acquiescence. His face paled, and he abruptly took several steps back, pointing at her and laughing: "Ha, ha! Absurd! Utterly absurd!"
