When all the sins of the world are committed against a person, they come together and become a raging fire of karma.
When Shakyamuni attained enlightenment, it is said that he experienced the burning of karmic fire, taking on the sins of all his believers upon himself, thus igniting the karmic fire of all beings. Relying on a Bodhi tree, he resisted all karmic forces, and remained imperishable even after the fire was extinguished, thus achieving the fruit of enlightenment.
When Laozi left Hangu Pass to the west, Yin Xi saw purple qi coming from the east, stretching for 30,000 miles and covering the sky. Although it was said to be auspicious and noble, it could also be that it was using the fire of the Dao of all living beings to refine itself.
The Six Ding Divine Fire is the flame in Laozi's Eight Trigrams Furnace.
There was wind but no fire in the Xun position of the Eight Trigrams Furnace. Sun Wukong, during his havoc in the Heavenly Palace, was fortunate enough to escape being burned by this fire, though this could also have been intentional on Laozi's part. Although he wasn't burned, his eyes were stung by the smoke, leaving him with an inability to tolerate smoke.
In the original Journey to the West, Red Boy's Samadhi True Fire was forged on the Flaming Mountain, and the fire on the Flaming Mountain was started by a brick that fell from Laozi's Eight Trigrams Furnace.
How powerful is the Six Ding Divine Fire? In the original story, Laozi (Taishang Laojun) once made a bet with Guanyin Bodhisattva, placing Guanyin Bodhisattva's willow branch in the Eight Trigrams Furnace until it was charred dry.
